  • Backgrounds: Dog bite is the most common cause of animal bites. This study was conducted to analyze dog bite patients and to compare the differences of groups based on age. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients admitted to our hospital after dog bite injuries from January 2003 through December 2004. The patients were divided into two groups based on age; group A (children, < 15 years) and group B (adult, ${\geq}15years$). Results: A total of 103 patients were enrolled in the study. Dog bite injury frequently occurred to children under 10 years of age (21%). Home was the most common place of dog bite in group A, but public place was the most common in group B (p=0.000). Face was the most frequent body region of dog bite in group A, but hand was the most frequent in group B (p=0.039). Conclusions: From this study, we found statistically significant differences between the groups. Knowledge about age-related characteristics could result in improved prevention and treatment of these injuries.

  • A 4-year-old, 6.1 kg intact female dachshund was referred to the Animal Medical Center with acute right hind limb lameness. Radiographs revealed fractures of iliac body and tibia in the right limb. In addition, the dog exhibited tricuspid valve regurgitation and moderate heartworm infection in the right ventricle and main pulmonary artery on echocardiogram. To obtain stable anesthetic conditions for operation, an adult heartworm removal procedure was previously followed by repair of the complex fractures. All surgical procedures were done without complication and with stable patient conditions. At a one month postoperative follow-up, the dog was doing well with normal ambulation and no tricuspid valve regurgitation as well.

  • In order to observe the antigenic localization in the tissues of the young adult Paragenimus westermani, immunogold labeling method was applied using serum immunoglobulins (IgG) of the dog which infected with isolated metacercariae from Cambaroides similis. The sectioned worm tissue was embedded in Lowicryl HM 20 medium and stained with infected serum IgG and protein A gold complex(particle size; 12 nm) It was observed by electron microscopy at each tissues of the worm. The gold particles were not observed on the basal lamina of the tegument, interstitial matrix of the parenchyma, the muscle tissue and mitochondria of the tegument. The gold particles were specifically labeled in the secretory granules in the vitelline cells. They were predominantly labeling on the epithelial lamela and lumen of caecum. The above finding showed that antigenic materials in young adult worm tissue were specifically concentrated on the tegumental syncytium as well as cytoplasm of tegumental cells.

  • Five black-tailed prairie dogs showed weakness. emaciation and anemia during the lairage period in May 2005. Among them, one adult male and one female prairie dogs were found dead. The stamp smear for revealed a tremendous number of Giardia trophozoites. Histopathological examinations of the intestine showed slightly inflammatory changes and cystic enlargement of the crypts in the duodenal and jejunal mucous membranes. From these findings, this disease was diagnosed as giardiasis in black-tailed prairie dog.

  • An 18-month-old intact male Cocker Spaniel dog weighing 7.7 kg was referred with a 2-week history of severe regurgitation. Based on the screening examination and fluoroscopy, this patient was diagnosed as having esophageal dysmotility. Treatment with mosapride and feeding small amounts of canned food frequently in an elevated position resulted in a successful outcome. The severe regurgitation improved, and the esophageal transit time improved from 18 sec to 8 sec. This is the first case report describing the diagnosis and clinical management of esophageal dysmotility in a young dog in Korea.

  • There were outbreaks of canine distemper in Korea from the late 1990's to the early 2000's even though modified live CDV vaccines had been used as the same way as before. The present study was undertaken to investigate the levels of neutralizing antibodies in the Korean dog population, and the factors associated with the levels, with special reference to the vaccination history of the dogs. A total of 772 serum samples were from clinically healthy dogs with over one year old throughout the Korea from January 2003 to April 2004. Details on the sex, breed, age, vaccination status and disease histories were recorded. The level of neutralizing antibodies titer was determined with a modified version of the microneutralization test. Titers over 16 were classified as protective CDV antibody titers. The overall rate of adult dogs with protective antibody titers was 96.0%. The dogs with protective antibody titers varied depending on age, sex, rearing environment and vaccination status. Because the majority of healthy adult dogs in Korea had adequate serum antibody titers against CDV and the immunity provided by the vaccinations is claimed to last for several years, annual revaccination protocol for CDV in adult dogs should be reconsidered.

  • To predict the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein (CP) in dogs we developed an in vitro system using an in vitro digestion method and a statistical analysis. The experimental diets used chicken meat powder as the protein source, with CP levels of 20% (22.01%, analyzed CP value as dry-based), 30% (31.35%, analyzed CP value as dry-based), and 40% (41.34%, analyzed CP value as dry-based). To simulate in vivo digestive processes a static in vitro digestion was performed in two steps; stomach and small intestine. To analyze ATTD the total fecal samples were collected in eight neutered beagle dogs during the experimental period. CP digestibility was calculated by measuring CP levels in dog food, in vitro undigested fraction, and dog feces. In result, CP digestibility at both in vivo and in vitro was increased with increasing dietary CP levels. To estimate in vivo digestibility the co-relation of in vivo ATTD and in vitro digestibility was investigated statistically and a regression equation was developed to predict the CP ATTD (% = 2.5405 × in vitro CP digestibility (%) + + 151.8). The regression equation was evaluated its feasibility by using a commercial diet. The predicted CP digestibility which was calculated by the regression equation showed high index of similarity (100.16%) with that of in vivo in dogs. With that, it would be a feasible non-animal method to predict in vivo CP digestibility by using in vitro digestion method and the proposed linear regression equation in adult dogs.
