  • In this study, we have examined the exfoliation behavior of layered clay during in-situ polymeriztion with styrene by using real-time XRD analysis. The 4C1 beam line at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) was used for this study. Different exfoliation behaviors have been shown to depend on the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clay and the chemical structure of organic modifiers. For 10A-MMT and 15A-MMT having high CEC, no peak shifts were observed on real-time XRD analysis during polymerization. However, 2$\theta$ for 25A-MMT and VDAC-MMT, each having low CEC’s as well as aromatic benzene moieties and vinyl groups, respectively, decreased as polymerization time increased.

  • Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has attracted many attention and applications due to its excellent electrochemical ability. Therefore, standardization of rGO through structural and thermal analysis facilitates quality improvement and management, enabling users to increase efficiency and reduce relevant costs. For rGO and graphene-related materials, it is very important to determine the number of layers and define the resulting difference in physical properties. In this study, 3~4 layers of rGO-1 and 9~10 layers of rGO-2 were obtained from graphene oxide (GO) through a hydrazine reduction process. For the prepared rGOs, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern obtained a diffraction peak at 2θ≈25° related to (002) reflection was used to calculate the layer numbers by determining interlayer distance and FWHM value. To reduce the angular uncertainty, XRD data analysis was performed with angle correction using standard reference materials for X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Precise interlayer distance and number of layers were determined using OriginLab and open-source XRD diffraction analysis programs using the angle-corrected diffraction data. TG-DSC thermal analysis was performed to further standardize the physical properties of rGO samples.

  • In this study, zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio of 0.6 - 1.8 were synthesized from coal fly ash from a thermal power plant using a fusion/hydrothermal method. The zeolitic materials were found to have cubic crystals structure and X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks of Na-A zeolite by XRD and SEM analysis. When the zeolitic materials were synthesized from the coal fly ash, the XRD peaks of the zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratios of 0.9-1.8 had the same location as the XRD peaks of commercial Na-A zeolite. The XRD peaks of the Na-A zeolite ($Na_{12}Al_{12}Si_{12}O_{48}27.4H_2O$) were confirmed in the $2{\theta}$ in the range of 7.18-34.18. However, it was also confirmed that peaks of $CaCO_3$, an impurity inhibiting synthesis of Na-A zeolite from CaO and $Na_2CO_3$ in the coal fly ash, occurred in the XRD peaks of the zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio of 1.5-1.8. The crystallinities of the zeolitic materials tended to increase gradually within the $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio range of 0.6-1.8.

  • Elemental analysis, SEM-EDX, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and IR analysis were adopted to examine the quality of charred woods excavated from the underground of the Daewoongjeon Hall of Youngguksa Temple, Youngdong-gun, Chungbuk, Korea. A large amount of calcium was detected in SEM-EDX analysis. The analyses of chemical elements suggested that completely charred wood was carbonized at about $500^{\circ}C$. The XRD results indicated the destruction of cellulose crystalline region. The IR analysis exhibited that thermal degradation of wood component was different depending upon the carbonization temperature. It can be suggested from the results that PEG with different molecular weights should be used for the conservation of excavated charred woods.

  • Nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a simple liquid phase process for producing ceramics powder using a precursor impregnated with a nickel(II) nitrate hexahydrate aqueous solution in an industrial pulp. The microfibrile structure of the precursor impregnated with nickel nitrate hexahydrate aqueous solution was confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the crystal structure and particle size of nickel oxide (NiO) particles produced as the heat treatment temperature of the precursor were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SEM. As a result, it was confirmed through XRD and SEM analysis that the temperature at which the organic material of the precursor is completely thermally decomposed was 495-500℃, and the size and crystallinity of the nickel oxide particles produced increased as the heat treatment temperature increased. The size of the nickel oxide particles obtained by heat treatment at 500-800℃ for 1 hour was 50-200 nm. It was confirmed by XRD and SEM analysis that a NiO crystal phase was formed at a heat treatment temperature of 380℃, only a single NiO phase existed until 800℃.

  • This study has focused on the possibility for recycling tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine as admixture for concrete. The XRD(X-ray diffraction analysis) and PSA(Particle size analysis) were performed to find mineralogical characteristics. As a result of XRD analysis, the tailings from the Sangdong tungsten fine were composed of quartz, chlorite, anorthite and cordierite etc. As a result of KSLT for cement mortar mixed with tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine, most of heavy metals were determined as below the guide line for waste material. In addition, the setting time and compressive strength of cement mortar mixed with tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine were investigated. It was indicated that the initial and final set were retarded according to increasing replacement of tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine. The compressive strength of mortar was decreased with increasing replacement of failings from the Sangdong tungsten mine.

  • In this study, the following results were obtained by analysis of electric properties with FT-IR, DSC, XRD, and SEM, in the range of temperature 30~160℃ and frequency 0.1~200 kHz, when filling agent (0~100 phr) and silicone oil (0~12 phr) were added to raw silicone rubber. In the case of 100 phr mixed samples, the relative dielectric constant εr gradually decreased from 4.3 to 3.96 as frequency increased, and the dielectric loss tan δ decreased to 0.01 at 300 Hz, then increased to 0.022 at 30 kHz, then decreased to 200 kHz. The FT-IR analysis identified the same binding structure according to the chemical composition of added silica (SiO2). Through DSC analysis, we could determine the change of heat quantity and the glass transition temperature of each specimen. In the XRD analysis, it was found that the images SiO2, TiO2, and Fe2O3 appeared for specimens with 0%, 50% and 100% filling agent. Finally, the SEM analysis confirmed that particles of 0.5 to 1.5 ㎛ size with silica (SiO2) mixing were dispersed evenly.
