Among 109 nursing diagnoses, pain, constipation, diarrhea, hyperthermia, high risk for infection, sleep pattern disturbance, and anxiety, chronic pain, altered urinary elimination, and altered nutrition : less than body requirements were the ten most frequently used diagnoses. 2. The primary problem in the use of nursing diagnoses was lack of time and personnel. Others were lack of knowledge and motivation, absence of protocols and absence of the appropriate methods to apply nursing diagnoses. 3. • The objectives of this study were to develop program in education & training of dietitians and cooks in contracted foodservice management company, The instruments were developed by reviewing extensive literatures on education programs and by interviewing with dietitians and cooks who were working in contracted foodservice management company. A total of 400 questionnaires was hand delivered at 14 contracted foodservice management companies by designated coordinators. A total of 286 questionnaires was usable; resulting in a 70.0%, response rate. Statistics data analysis was completed using the SPSS program for frequency analysis, reliability, mean value, t-test, ANOVA and Crohnbach's alpha coefficient. Crohnbach's alpha coefficients for dietitian's scale and cook's scale were 0.9548 and 0.9513. A few things were suggested according to the results of the survey: 1. The dietitians and the cooks wanted to take a continuing education to improve their job. Therefore the contracted foodservice management company should provide them with the systematic education according to their job experience. 2, As the continuing education for dietitians and the continuing education for cooks were disappeared, Korean Dietitian Association and Korean Culinary Association should make a certified continuing education program and give them a new knowledge and a changeable food culture.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the nursing activities delineated by interview of nurses with those on nursing notes. Method: The participants of interview were 18 nurses working in medical and surgical units of a large hospital in Seoul. Each nurse was asked to choose one patient who demand most nursing care among her patients. The nurse was then interviewed to describe what her nursing activities for the patient was that day. The audio-taped interview was transcribed and the content was analyzed by researchers. Nursing notes of each nurses' patients were copied and the content analyzed by researchers. Finally, themes from the interview data and those from nursing notes were compared. Result: Activities related to emotional or psychological nursing, education for patient and families, and problem solving related to treatment or nursing procedure were most often omitted in nursing notes. Most of the documentation in nursing notes were related to physical condition of patients or physician's orders. Nurses described that they will do better recording if they were given less patient care responsibility, had better nursing knowledge, had better recording system, and received more training on nursing record. Conclusion: Nursing notes did not reflect nursing activities properly. Few independent nursing roles were documented in the nursing notes. Development of nursing education program and nursing record system is needed for improvement of nursing record.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe the cultural competence among community health practitioners (CHPs). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used with a convenience sample of 257 CHPs. Data collection was conducted with a structured questionnaire, including Cultural Competence Assessment. Data were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA with the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: Most participants reported a moderate level of cultural competence (M=3.0,SD=0.41). Scores for culturally competent behaviors were high (M=3.4, SD=0.48) and cultural knowledge scores were low (M=2.6, SD=0.54). Those CHPs who were living with their family, were working in rural area, and had more opportunities to contact with multicultural patients and experience abroad showed significantly higher cultural competence. Conclusion: The findings support the need for future education and training to enhance CHPs' cultural competence.

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the experience of school health instructors in applying complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM). Method: The participants were 215 health instructors working in elementary schools in Busan. Data were collected from Dec. 1, 2004 to Mar. 10, 2005 and were analyzed using SPSS WIN 10.0. Results: Most of the health instructors had knowledge about CAM. Among the various CAM methods, acupuncture was the most widely known at 78.6%. While 53.5% had no experience in CAM education, 46.5% had been trained. Slightly over half (52.1%) had used CAM at school and based their decision on personal experience. As to applicability of CAM at school, 72.1% thought CAM was applicable, and 78.7% of this group considered alleviation of symptoms and assistance in the treatment process as the reasons for their answer. There were significant differences in responses as to the applicability of CAM according to age (p=.002), work experience (p=.004) and educational background (p=.002). Conclusions: The above results suggest that there is a need to develop a professional education program on complimentary and alternative medicine to assist school health instructorsto plan nursing interventions using CAM which are individualized and practical.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influenced the preparation for later life of the age group of 30s, 40s, and 50s in production workers. Methods: The participants for this study were 320 men working in 2 workspaces of Ulsan city. The data was collected from May to July, 2010 using structured questionnaires. Chi-square, One way ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient and multiple regression with the SPSS WIN 17.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: There were statistically significant differences among 30s, 40s, and 50s workers regarding the preparation for later life, health promoting behavior, knowledge and attitude of cerebrocardiovascular (CVD) diseases. 50s workers were significantly more higher than 30s and 40s regarding the preparation for later life, health promoting behavior, cognition and attitude of CVD diseases. The model including variables related to the preparation for later life explained variance of 42.3% of 30s, 36.0% of 40s, and 28.5% of 50s workers. Finally, cognition of CVD diseases and social support were predictors in explaining the level of the preparation for later life among production workers. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study, nursing interventions should be developed to improve the preparation for later life of production workers according to age differences.

  • The German society for promotion of EIA was founded in 1987 with the aim to support the introduction of EIA in Germany. The society with its center in Hamm where there is a plenty collection of literature, studies and further scientific sources does an enormous work in EIA-consulting all over the country. This work practically is done without any governmental support, only by private activities. The EIA society is structured within 9 regional as well as 19 specialized working groups and consisits of about 1,000 members. The unification of Germany in 1989/90 also influenced the development in this field, of course. While in the former Western part of Germany the already existing environmental administrations were able to react on the EIA-law of 1990 with their long time experiences, in the Eastern part the corresponding structures must be built up newly from the beginning. Since 1990 a great number of interested people also from Eastern Germany became numbers of the EIA-Society. By them an additional pool of knowledge and activity was brought into the society. This also applies for methods and means of EIA which were developed in the East during the time ago independently.

  • Higher educational institutions face an increasing demand for developing a renewed set of competencies of college students who will live in the knowledge-based society. However, relatively little is known about what constitutes the core competencies that college students need to develop and how we can improve them. Nine categories of core competencies required for college graduates were drawn from the previous research and examples of core competencies developed by other institutions. They are analytic thinking skills, problem-solving skills, communicating skills, collaborative working skills, and etc. A reading guidance course for strengthening core competencies, developed based on the teaching and learning methods was adapted to students of LIS for one semester. Implications of these and related findings are discussed.
