In this paper, we present a noncoherent IR-UWB (Impulse Radio-Ultra Wide Band) ranging system with an AFE (Analog Front End) composed of a simple integrator and an 1-bit ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter), and define AFE characteristics affecting the ranging performance. This system is realistic and easy to implement, since the integrator simply accumulates signal energies and the simple 1-bit ADC is applied instead of the multi-bit ADCs for coherent IR-UWB systems. On the other hand, its ranging accuracy is largely affected channel environments such as noise, multipath fading and so on, since the noncoherent receiver simply squares and integrates the received signals. However, despite these practical importances, there are few conventional researches on the performance analysis according to AFE characteristics in IR-UWB ranging systems. To this end, we analyze in this paper ranging performance according to AFE characteristics for the noncoherent IR-UWB ranging system in various wireless channel environments, and through these results we also present system parameters to be considered in UWB hardware designs.

In this paper, a compact RF Front-end module for Wireless Fidelity(Wi-Fi) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access(WiMAX) applications is realized by low temperature co-fired ceramic(LTCC) technology. The RF Front-end module is composed of three LTCC band-pass filters, a Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator(FBAR) filter, fully embedded matching circuits, an SPDT switch for mode selection, an SPDT switch for Tx/Rx selection, and an SP4T switch for band selection. The parasitic elements of 0.2~0.3 pF are generated by the structure of stacking in the top pad pattern for DC block capacitor of SPDT switch for mode selection. These kinds of parasitic elements break the matching characteristic, and thus, the overall electrical performance of the module is degraded. In order to compensate it, we insert a parallel lumped-element inductor on capacitor pad pattern for DC block, so that we obtain the optimized performance of the RF Front-end module. The fabricated RF front-end module has 12 layers including three inner grounds and it occupies less than $6.0mm{\times}6.0mm{\times}0.728mm$.
This paper presents the design and analysis of RF Front End for Wireless Heartbeat measurement System. In this work LNA, an inductor connected at the gate of the cascode transistor and capacitive cross-coupling are strategically combined to reduce the noise and the nonlinearity influences of the cascode transistors in a differential LNA. The Mixer is implemented by using the Gilbert-type configuration, cross pmos injection technique and the resonating technique for the tail capacitance. The resulting LNA achieves 1.26dB NF, better than 1.88dB NF Typical. Also Mixer resulting achieves 9.8dB at 100KHz.

In this paper, an 1.5Gbit/s wireless data transmission system using the carrier frequency of 300 GHz band was implemented. The RF front-end was composed of schottky diode sub-harmonic mixer, frequency tripler, and horn antennas for transmitter and receiver, respectively. The LO frequencies of sub-harmonic mixer are 150GHz for transmit chain and 156GHz for receive chain. The ASK(Amplitude Shift Keying) modulation was used in the transmitter and the envelope detection method was used in the heterodyne receiver. The conversion loss of sub-harmonic mixer and implementation system loss were measured to be 9.8dB and 1.2dB, respectively. The 1.5Gbit/s video signal with HD-SDI format was transmitted over wireless distance of 40cm without optical lens(4.2m with optical lens) and displayed on HDTV at the transmitted average output power of $20{\mu}W$.
The future neuro-prosthetic devices would be required spikes data monitoring through sub-nanoscale transistors that enables to neuroscientists and clinicals for scalable, wireless and implantable applications. This research investigates the spikes monitoring through integrated CNT front-end amplifier for neuro-prosthetic diagnosis. The proposed carbon nanotube-based architecture consists of front-end amplifier (FEA), integrate fire neuron and pseudo resistor technique that observed high electrical performance through neural activity. A pseudo resistor technique ensures large input impedance for integrated FEA by compensating the input leakage current. While carbon nanotube based FEA provides low-voltage operation with directly impacts on the power consumption and also give detector size that demonstrates fidelity of the neural signals. The observed neural activity shows amplitude of spiking in terms of action potential up to $80{\mu}V$ while local field potentials up to 40 mV by using proposed architecture. This fully integrated architecture is implemented in Analog cadence virtuoso using design kit of CNT process. The fabricated chip consumes less power consumption of $2{\mu}W$ under the supply voltage of 0.7 V. The experimental and simulated results of the integrated FEA achieves $60G{\Omega}$ of input impedance and input referred noise of $8.5nv/{\sqrt{Hz}}$ over the wide bandwidth. Moreover, measured gain of the amplifier achieves 75 dB midband from range of 1 KHz to 35 KHz. The proposed research provides refreshing neural recording data through nanotube integrated circuit and which could be beneficial for the next generation neuroscientists.

In this paper, we consider the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based transmission incoorperating with beam-switching and space-time coding. Specifically, we consider three configurations; (1) the beamforming technique, (2) the spatial diversity technique and (3) their combination and evaluate the performance in wireless personal area network (WPAN) environment. For the beam-forming technique, we consider the beam-switching which is performed at RF front-end with a pre-defined set of beams and for the space-time coding, we consider the Alamauti scheme with antenna selection. For the combined scheme, we divide the antennas used into two group to generate two independent beams and apply the two-antenna Alamauti scheme over the two beams. For these three configurations, performance is evaluated in terms of the SNR gain.

This paper describes RF front-end transceiver chipset for the dual-mode operation of PCS-Korea and IMT-2000. The transceiver chipset has been implemented in a $0.25\mutextrm{m}$ single-poly five-metal CMOS technology. The receiver IC consists of a LNA and a down-mixer, and the transmitter IC integrates an up-mixer. Measurements show that the transceiver chipset covers the wide RF range from 1.8GHz for PCS-Korea to 2.1GHz for IMT-2000. The LNA has 2.8~3.1dB NF, 14~13dB gain and 5~4dBm IIP3. The down mixer has 15.5~16.0dB NF, 15~13dB power conversion gain and 2~0dBm IIP3. The up mixer has 0~2dB power conversion gain and 6~3dBm OIP3. With a single 3.0V power supply, the LNA, down-mixer, and up-mixer consume 6mA, 30mA, and 25mA, respectively.

This paper presents a electrocardiogram(ECG), electromyogram(EMG), and Photoplethysmography(PPG) signal wireless monitoring system based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). ECG and EMG sensor interface analog front-end circuits are designed by using off-the-shelf parts. Texas Instruments(TI)'s CC2540DK is used for BLE-based communication. Two CC2540DK modules are used as Peripheral and Central nodes. In peripheral device, vital signals are acquired by the analog front-ends and fed to ADC for analog-to-digital conversion. The peripheral transmitts the data through the air to the central device. The central device receive the data and sends them to PC using UART. GUI is designed using Labview for displaying the acquired vital signals. The developed system can be used for future ubiquitous wireless healthcare system based on bluetooth 4.0.
