  • Perkinsus sp. has been identified as responsible organism for the decrease in Manil clam production along the west and south coast of Korea. Monthly investigation on infection intensity and pathology of Perkinsus infected Manila clam population was carried out in Komsoe Bay located in the west coast during February and December 1999. About one hundred clams were collected each month for the analysis. Infected clams were incubated in fluid thioglycollate media over a week, stained with iodine solution, digested with 2M NaOH and the number of Perkinsus present in an individual recorded. Histological slides were also prepared from infected clams and their pathologic symptoms were examined using a microscope. Trophozoites of Perkinsus sp. were dominantly distributed on gills and epithelia of digestive glands however a few numbers could be detected at siphons and foot tissues. Heavily infected clams often exhibited white spots on mantle and foot tissues due to the inflammatory reaction of the hemocytes, forming nodules. Trophozoites were also found along the connective tissues of follicles during spawning season indicating that Perkinsus sp. may disturb reproduction of the clam. Total number of Perkinsus sp. in an individual clam varied from none to 9, 550, 000 with a monthly mean of 279, 663 to 2, 198, 558 during the course of study. The number of Perkinsus sp. in the clam was found to lowest durin July and August when unusually low salinity was recorded in this area due to the heavy rain. Highest monthly infection intensity in terms of total number of Perkinsus sp. i clam was observed in February, when water temperature recorded as lowest during the study. Small size of clams with shell length of ten mm or less were not infected with Perkinsus sp. It was concluded that Perkinsus infection in Manila clam is in pa controlled by changes in salinity and clam growth; low salinity environment minimize infection intensity while tile clams get more Perkinsus as they grow.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the lesion of red internal organs in slaughtered pigs and provided assistant data for pig farms. During March to December 2015, a total of 1,160 lung samples out of 58 herds were collected randomly from pigs slaughtered in Jeonbuk province. In addition, 290 hilar lymph nodes from pig with pneumonic lung lesion (5 samples per herd) were screened for selected viral and bacterial pathogens. Gross lesions of lungs such as swine enzootic pneumonia (SEP), pleuritis, pleuropneumonia, pericarditis and liver white spots were examined. The overall prevalence of SEP was 64.3% (746/1,160). In the analysis of seasonal prevalence, there was an increase of occurrence during the spring months (287/400, 71.8%) and decrease during the fall months (93/200, 46.5%) among the whole herds. The mean number of SEP score per pig was $1.20{\pm}1.28$. The prevalence of pleuropneumonia, pleuritis, pericarditis, and milk spot was 25.5% (296/1,160), 44.1% (512/1,160), 3.8% (44/1,160) and 17.6% (204/1,160), respectively. The most frequent region with lung lesion was diaphragmatic lobes (left 17.1%, right 17.3%). In the detection of viral pathogens by PCR, porcine circovirus type2 (PCV2) was positive in 86.9% (252/290), while porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) was not detected, In the case of bacterial pathogens, 50 microorganisms were isolated by PCR and/or microbiological test. The most frequently isolated bacteria was Streptococcus suis (20, 34.4%), followed by Pasteurella multocida (17, 29.3%), Streptococcus spp. (11, 3.4%), Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (2, 8.9%).

  • The purpose of this study is to help develop high quality brassieres with functionality and comfort, fitting adolescents' physical features during their growth period. This study conducts a comparative analysis of juvenile brassiere and adult brassiere to identify the problems of brassieres in the market. The raw data for this study was processed by SPSS 10.1. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The results of this survey show that the girls' satisfaction of their breasts has correlations between breast protrusion degree and volume. The girls think that if they have protrusive breasts their breast volume is big, and their breast satisfaction level shows high. 2. The results show that the objective of brassiere wearing is to prevent breasts sag and rupture, make good breast shape, balance their entire body shape, and make beautiful outer garment line. Brassiere functions are to prevent jiggle of breasts, make a good body line, and cover the nipples. For the grader school students, they are wearing brassiere to make a good balanced body and as their breasts developed, they are wearing brassiere for beautiful body shape not just to cover up their breasts. 3. In regard to brassiere cup size recognition, as students have higher grade at school, they have better recognition abouxt their cup size. As they are better aware of their cup size, they have better satisfaction with their cup size. Therefore, choosing the right size of brassiere for their bust is very important. 4. Girl students' brassiere preference shows that 317 students (56.9%) prefer white for brassiere colors, following pink and flesh color. Their most preferred brassiere material is cotton (354 people, 63.6%) because cotton is not sensitive even for weak skin. For brassiere style, 273 students (49%) prefer round style, following spots and mold. Their most preferred brassiere style is stake. In addition, brassiere should not press their breasts because their breasts are developing during puberty period.

  • The crack-healing behavior and corrosion resistance of SiC ceramics were investigated. Heat treatments were carried out from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$. A corrosion test of SiC was carried out in acid and alkaline solutions under KSL1607. The results showed that heat treatment in air could significantly increase the strength. The heat-treatment temperature has a profound influence on the extent of crack healing and the degree of strength recovery. The optimum heat-treatment temperature was $1100^{\circ}C$ for one hour at an atmospheric level. In the two kinds of solutions, the cracks in a specimen were reduced with increasing time, and the surface of the crack healed specimen had a greater number of black and white spots. The strength of the corroded cracked specimen was similar to that of the cracked specimen. The strength of the corroded crack healed specimen decreased 47% and 75% compared to that of the crack healed specimen in the acid and alkaline solutions, respectively. Therefore, the corrosion of SiC ceramics is faster in an alkaline solution than in an acid solution.

  • In 2018, symptoms of black rot on apple (Malus pumila var. dulcissima KOIDZ) cv. Fuji were observed in Yeongcheon-si, Korea. The fruit decay symptoms consisted of purple pimples spots, black rot around the seed cavity (calyx end), mummified fruit. To isolate the causal agent, small fragment (2 to 3 mm) of decayed tissue from the lesion margin were placed on WA or PDA. Fungal colonies on PDA produced dense white aerial mycelium, becoming dark gray with age. Pycnidia and conidia were observed under a light microscopy. The shapes of conidia were aseptate, ovoid, rounded at both ends, and $21.7-28.3{\times}9.9-15.3{\mu}m$. Based on morphological and cultural characteristics, this fungus was identified as Diplodia seriata. To confirm its identity, two loci (ITS and ${\beta}$-tubulin) were sequenced for molecular identification. BLAST searches indicated 100% identity with D. seriata. A pathogenicity test was conducted with isolates on Fuji apples. The apples were inoculated with mycelial plugs (5 mm) from 7-day-old cultures of the putative pathogens. All inoculated apples developed rot symptoms identical to the original symptoms, from which D. seriata were reisolated, fulfilling Koch's postulates. This study is the first report of black rot caused Diplodia seriata on apple.

  • The aims of this study were to measure the ultrasonographic biometry of genitalia of the indigenous rams and observe the relationship of biometry on semen parameters. The epididymal volume was significantly reduced (p < 0.01) after semen collection compared with before collection for both left and right part in all rams. The cumulative results showed that although there was no significant difference in length, width and volume of epididymis between before and after semen collection, however the values were lower after collection. The epididymal length was significantly correlated with epididymal volume (p < 0.01), semen motility (p < 0.05) and semen morphology (p < 0.01). Epididymal width was only significantly correlated with epididymal volume (p < 0.01) not with the semen parameters. Epididymal volume had a significant correlation only with semen morphology (p < 0.01).The scrotal circumference had the significant correlation with semen density, mass activity, concentration and motility (p < 0.01). The epididymis had the similar or slightly increased echogenicity as compared to the normal testis. During whole study, some white spots were found on testis which did not affect the semen quantity and quality. Significant variation was observed only for semen concentration and motility among the rams (p < 0.05). The overall normal morphology was 90.5 ± 4.6% with highest percentage of coiled tail abnormalities.

  • A single opah specimen (705 mm SL) was collected from Samcheok, South Korea on November, 2014, and firstly reported as Lampris guttatus by Jeong et al. (2015). Thereafter Lampris lauta was revived and three additional species (Lampris australensis, Lampris incognitus, Lampris megalopsis) were newly reported (Underkoffler et al., 2018). Therefore, it needs to review the scientific name of the Korean opah. The first reported opah specimen from Korea is now preserved as stuffed specimen at the Seodaemun Museum of Natural History in Seoul. We re-investigated the morphological features of stuffed specimen. It was characterized by having the following morphological combinations; orbital diameter is greater than 5% of fork length, whole body including head with white irregular spots, all fins are deep red. In addition, L. guttatus is confined to North Atlantic Ocean, whereas L. megalopsis is distributed worldwide from temperate to tropical waters. Therefore, our comprehensive study suggests that the scientific name of opah (L. guttatus) reported in Korea must be changed to L. megalopsis based on morphological characteristics and distribution area.

  • Rice stripe virus (RSV) disease is one of the major constraints in rice production, transmitted by the small brown planthopper (SBPH; Laodelphax striatellus). Upon RSV infection, plants develop typical symptoms, which include chlorosis and weakness of newly emerged leaves, white and yellow spots, stripe on leaves, and necrotic and wilting leaves, resulting in plant growth inhibition, oxidative damage that may culminate in programmed cell death (PCD) and plant death in severe epidemics. Although RSV-resistant quantitative trait loci (QTLs), Stv-a, Stv-b, and Stv-bi, were mapped using various resistant varieties, one RSV-resistant gene, OsSOT1, has been identified so far. In this study, we used the rice cultivar Zenith, known to carry Stv-b, to investigate novel RSV-genes through fine mapping. Therefore, we crossed Zenith (Donor parent, RSV resistant) with Ilpum (Recurrent parent, RSV susceptible) to fine-map using a BC2F2 population of 2100 plants. Chromosome segment introgression lines that were heterozygous at a different region were selected, two types of heterozygous lines showed an heterozygous genotype between Sid2 and Sid75 to Indel9 and RM6680. Interestingly, we identified qSTV11Z region harboring Stv-b, covering about 171-kb region between the InDel markers Sid75 and Indel8. The localization of qSTV11Z provides useful information that could be used for marker-assisted selection and determination of genetic resources in rice breeding.

  • Milky white spots appeared on red bean leaves in a red bean cultivation area located in Jangyeon-myeon, Goesan-gun, Chungbuk Province. After culturing the pathogen in PDA medium, their morphology was observed, and their genes were BLAST-searched in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The pathogen was identified as a fungus called Rhizopus arrhizus. As a result of reinoculating the isolated pathogen on red beans, the same symptoms as those in the isolated leaves occurred. Characteristic colonies of R. arrhizuson PDA medium initially showed a bright color and then changed to dark gray over time, with mostly spherical sporangia. The sporangiospores were spherical or elliptical, mostly irregular, and small in size. Therefore, based on these results, this disease has not yet been reported in red beans and was called red bean brown leaf blight caused by Rhizopus arrhizus A. Fisch (syn. R. oryzae).

  • The incidence of colon cancer in South Korea has recently been the highest among gastrointestinal cancers. Early diagnosis is critical, and image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE) is a key diagnostic method. Colon tumors primarily include serrated polyps, adenomatous polyps, and colon cancer. Early endoscopic techniques relied on simple visual inspection for diagnosis, with tumor size and shape being the primary considerations. Low-resolution images made these methods ineffective for detecting small or early-stage lesions. IEE now enables detailed examination using high-resolution images and various color and structure analyses. Techniques like narrow band imaging (NBI) allow precise observation of vascular patterns and surface structures. Hyperplastic polyps often appear similar in color to the surrounding mucosa, with no visible vascular pattern. Sessile serrated lesions have a cloudy surface with distinct boundaries and irregular patterns, often with black spots in the crypts. Adenomatous polyps are darker brown, with a visible white epithelial network and various pit patterns. Magnified images help differentiate between low- and high-grade dysplasia, with low-grade showing regular patterns and high-grade showing increased irregularities. The NBI International Colorectal Endoscopic classification identifies malignant colon tumors as brown or dark brown with disorganized vascular patterns. The Japan NBI Expert Team classification includes loose vascular areas and disrupted thick vessels. The Workgroup serrAted polypS and Polyposis classification aids in differentiating between hyperplastic polyps and sessile serrated lesions/adenomas when deciding whether to resect polyps larger than 5 mm. Suspected high-grade dysplasia warrants endoscopic submucosal dissection and follow-up. Future advancements in IEE are expected to further enhance early detection and diagnostic accuracy.
