  • Considering on the crisis and dilemma of monumentality in Modern architecture, this study analyse the historic reason of decay and new possibility of monumentality within the context of contemporary socio-cultural context. Historically monumentality has been considered as a main substance of High architecture in e tradition of Western Architecture. Difference between building and architecture mainly lies in monumentality which brings about esthetic quality. Usually architects take it granted that the physical and formal characteristics automatically cause the monumentality, But since the modem period the decline of communicative and representative function of architecture made this belief questionable. As Monumentality itself faced the dilemma with the modernity, ironically architects has to response to the task to handle the increasing social demands of monumental building. This study firstly shows the dilemma of monumentality in depth in case of the holocaust museum. Then we analyse the concept of monumentality itself by means of theoretical view of A. Loos and A Riegl We also analyse the change of role which monumental building played in history. Cultural and social change of context, and fundamental change of architecture old way of building a monument impossible. In conclusion this study proposes the new concept and searches new horizon of monumentality with a finding of the otherness of monumentality. Conventional monumental building language has to give way to new approaches. With some examples we already can find a new possibility.

  • This research has a purpose to review architectural education in the early modern times in Korea. Although the mission school had some programs on basic woodworks, which were for architectural technicians afterwards, it has not been paid attention yet. Missionaries recognized the problematic situation that the most western-styled building all over Korea were built by Chinese or Japanese technicians, and they made up the minds and tried to train Korean apprentices. This training program couldn't be developed to the authorized curriculum, and moreover was limited that it was concentrated on just woodwork training; however, the missionaries made their best endeavor to overcome the deficiency of skillful technicians. At the woodwork department of the mission school there were occasionally effective programs, for example, a training of drawing or an actual participation at the real construction site. Mission schools could be said to offer the helpful programs for the early education on newly coming architecture.

  • This Study is concerned with the present condition and prospect of architectural stained glass in Korea. Stained glass had been architectural art from the origin. But it had declined since the Renaissance era, and began to revive in the early 20th century. The stained glass inflowed with church architecture occasionally by the western missionaries. And it has been developed actively since 1980' with the boom in church building. There are about 30 studios which are making stained glass in Korea, but very few studio work true architectural stained glass. Stained glass is still treated as simple decoration or 2-dimensional mosaic. Architect and interior designer even have little understanding of architectural character of stained glass.I have considered the problems and prospected architectural stained glass which inspire modern architecture with human sensitivity in Korea.

Thus the major analysis is to take basic data, such as image(modern, western, traditional, etc) about exterior form of housing corresponding to the landscape. The result summarized as follows First, the elements for the characteristic of recognition were exterior material finish, exterior color, roof type, roof material finish, window size, roof slope, area of wall vs roof. Second, the image of traditional housing was very insufficient to plan landscape of housing with design elements. This research suggests that landscape housing of future is to be environmental landscape design and the proper design is to be various considering not only user's preference but also control of landscape.

Before Manun-Jae was used for the house. The Kyungduck-Dan was constructed in August according to the Lunar Calender in 1927. The Manun-Jae(house for Ki-hun Kang, millionaire ) was completed in 1924. Modern Architectures brought to Korea with the bricks, the tiles, the flash doors, the plate grasses, the brass hardwares. These architectural material was used in positive. During the construction of Manun-Jae in 1924, it happened the architectural exchage among a korean, a chinese and a japanese constructor. Though using the air exhaust valve at the kitchen of Ukyung-Kak( old Anchae), it could be assume that the modern convenience and the improvement of residential environments was considered at that period during the construction of Manun-Jae. That construction was elected with the brick($222mm{\times}106mm{\times}50mm$), the chinese colored tile and plate glass such a modem materials. The new shape of the korean lattice window and the wooden flash-door with glass was used. • Across the culture of Western Europe, dichotomy based on the visual sense has evolved. They believed eyes and ears requiring a distance related in recognition, are more developed than any other human senses in human body. Dominant position, as a condition to using a perspective, the eye has been just concentrated in the development of optical sight. But developed a variety of modern media, highlighting the importance of the other perception, it makes dichotomy to the expansion of perception over the single function of visuality. Recently, Guille Deleuze and Merleau-Ponty try to recover the sense of tactility segregated in skin from body keeping eyes for distance. By the result, the activity can be happened by being connected to the body rather than to eye in the space between the subject and object. From the phase of recognition where the human body tries to identify the object in the space considering a time, it will be changed for the subject to the phase of structure vice versa. Visual tactility is to eliminate the distance between subject and object. If the visual tactility is to erase the distance different from the visual in dichotomy, it will be occurred to having a tension and makes new relationship to work trying to move the subjective point of view in object. Like this evidence in analysis of architecture, it can be easy to find the Korean architecture rather than western architecture in terms of emphasizing the time and space. The fact, architecture of Lee Dynasty had been preserved and consisted basic form and style over the centuries makes us assume that visual tactility was considered as well as the visual sense. This study will be intensive in terms of visual and tactile inherent in the subject and how it is being connected to the movement in the space and time.

  • In the middle of 1940s, Hassan Fathy, a great Islamic contemporary architect, built cheap multifamily houses, schools, mosques and public market in the village of Gourna, near Luxor, Egypt for the poor Egyptian. At that time the western style houses made of concrete materials were so expensive for the Egyptian people in the rural area, that Hassan Fathy, a young architect, challenged to build the houses for them. He considered seriously the expenses that the lower-class Egyptians in the rural area could pay for building houses. He built up gorges arch-style building and done-style building by using traditional materials, which consisted of reeds, roues and mud brick for adobe. He made the design of houses cool in summer and warm in winter. The houses in the Gourna village were, afterwards, highly evaluated, in the sense that they represented the Islamic uniqueness of architecture and its beauty. As a result, the Gourna village made him receive many of awards including the Aga Khan Award. This study tries to focus on the reviewing of modern Islamic architecture by analyzing Hassan Fathy's architectural art, on the investigation of traditional materials used for building the Gourna village, and finally on the contribution for the research of Islamic architecture
