A three-dimensional numerical model called NEWTANK is employed to investigate solitary wave run-up with an internal wave-maker on a steep slope. The numerical model solves the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations for two-phase flows. The LES (large-eddy-simulation) approach is adopted to model the turbulence effect by using the Smagorinsky SGS (sub-grid scale) closure model. A two-step projection method is adopted in numerical solutions, aided by the Bi-CGSTAB (Bi-Conjugate Gradient Stabilized) method to solve the pressure Poisson equation for the filtered pressure field. The second-order accurate VOF (volume-of-fluid) method is used to track the distorted and broken free surface. A solitary wave is first internally generated and propagated over a constant water depth in the three-dimensional domain. Numerically predicted results are compared with analytical solutions and numerical errors are analyzed in detail. The model is then applied to study solitary wave run-up on a steep slope and the obtained results are compared with available laboratory measurements.

Underwater noise radiated from submarines is directly related to the probability of being detected by the sonar of an enemy vessel. Therefore, minimizing the noise of a submarine is essential for improving survival outcomes. For modern submarines, as the speed and size of a submarine increase and noise reduction technology is developed, interest in flow noise around the hull has been increasing. In this study, a noise analysis technique was developed to predict flow noise generated around a submarine shape considering the free surface effect. When a submarine is operated near a free surface, turbulence-induced noise due to the turbulence of the flow and bubble noise from breaking waves arise. First, to analyze the flow around a submarine, VOF-based incompressible two-phase flow analysis was performed to derive flow field data and the shape of the free surface around the submarine. Turbulence-induced noise was analyzed by applying permeable FW-H, which is an acoustic analogy technique. Bubble noise was derived through a noise model for breaking waves based on the turbulent kinetic energy distribution results obtained from the CFD results. The analysis method developed was verified by comparison with experimental results for a submarine model measured in a Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT).

Various types of flow patterns around the stepped weir and spillway, such as the skimming flow over such structures and the wave-type flow with a standing undular hydraulic jump and roller downstream of the structures, are developed in open channels. Unsteady three-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out using a hybrid RANS-LES turbulence modeling approach and the volume of fluid method for resolving free surface fluctuations to represent the turbulent flow including the skimming flow and wave-type flow over a stepped weir installed in a rectangular channel. The comparison of numerical results with an existing experimental measurement reveals that the present numerical simulations reasonably well reproduce the turbulent flow passing the stepped weir, in terms of time-averaged velocity profiles at selected locations downstream of the weir, flow topology characterized by the wave-type and skimming flows, the maximum height and length of the standing wave and the length of reattachment of recirculating zone. The numerical result further elucidates the distinct flow behaviors of the wave-type and skimming flow by presenting instantaneous intense variations of free surface and velocity vectors, the distributions of Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy and three-dimensional complex features of coherent structures and total pressure distribution.
The propagation of impact wave induced by landslide and debris flow occurred on the slope of lake, reservoir and bays is a three-dimensional natural phenomenon associated with strong interaction of debris flow and water flow in complex geometrical environments. We carried out 3D numerical modeling of such impact wave in a bay using a multiphase turbulence flow model and a rheology model for non-Newtonian debris flow. Numerical results are compared with previous experimental result to evaluate the performance of present numerical approach. The results underscore that the reasonable predictions of both thickness and speed of debris flow head penetrating below the water surface are crucial to accurately reproduce the maximum peak height and free surface profiles of impact wave. Two predictions computed using different initial debris flow thicknesses become different from the instant when the peaks of impact waves fall due to the gravity. Numerical modeling using relatively thick initial debris flow thickness appears to well reproduce the water surface profile of impact wave propagating across the bay as well as wave run-up on the opposite slope. The results show that the maximum run-up height on the opposite slope is not sensitive to the initial thickness of debris flows of same total volume. Meanwhile, appropriate rheology model for debris flow consisting of inviscid particle only should be employed to more accurately reproduce the debris flow propagating along the channel bottom.
The accretion disk with viscosity including collisions is examined. The diffusion process are also considered for a given mass distribution in the disk. Under such a circumstance the diffusion coefficient is simply proportional to 1/${\sqrt{r}}$ The disk rapidly transfers the turbulent angular momentum and the wave front toward the outer cold regions. Then an instability situation occurs in the disk.
Computational Study of a sphere subjected to free stream flow and simultaneously subjected to spinning motion is carried out. Three dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved using fully implicit finite volume scheme. SST(Shear Stress Transport) $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model is used. Aerodynamic characteristics being affected are studied. Validation of the numerical process is done for the no spin condition. Variation of drag coefficient and shock wave strength with increase in spinning rate is reported. Changes in the wake region of the sphere with respect to spinning speed are also observed.
In order to develop the water hammering cleaner system for removing scale and slime in inner metal or non-metal piping wall, the flow characteristics are investigated by numerical and experimental methods. The air bubbles in the piping systems as a shock wave are formed and transferred with the water flow in the piping. The governing equations are derived from making using of three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations with the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and SIMPLE algorithm. Pressure distributions in the pipeline are calculated for different air supply pressures. Also, we prepared some experimental results of the pressure differences for various air supply times.

The conventional ejector-diffuser system makes use of high pressure primary stream to propel the secondary stream through pure shear action for the purposes of transport or compression of fluid. It has been widely used in many industrial applications such as seawater desalination, solar refrigeration, marine engineering, etc. The present study is performed numerically to study the performance of a two-stage ejector-diffuser system. The detailed flow phenomenon of the ejector-diffuser system has been critically predicted by means of the numerical approach using compressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The axi-symmetric supersonic ejector-diffuser flow has been solved by a fully implicit finite volume scheme with a two-equation k-omega turbulence model. The numerical results are validated with existing experimental data. Detailed flow physics and their contributions on ejector performance are detected to compare both single-stage and two-stage ejectors. The performance improvement on the ejector-diffuser system is discussed in terms of the mass flux ratio and the coefficient of power.

A numerical study based on the three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations is presented to analyze the transonic flowfield through two-stage axial compressor. Explicit four-step Runge-Kutta scheme is used for solution algorithm, and local time step and implicit residual averaging are introduced for enhancing the convergency. Artificial dissipation model is adopted to assure the stability of solution. The solver is coupled with Baldwin-Lomax model to describe turbulence. To avoid calculating the unsteady flow, a mixing process is modeled at a station between rotating and stationary blade rows. Results show a variety of important physical phenomena. Comparison of the flowfields with and without tip clearance shows that the effect is considerable in this flowfield. Comparisons with experimental data carried out to validate the calculational results show reasonable agreements. Some remedies are also suggested to improve the revealed problems.
