  • In this study, we investigated morphology of nanotube and micropore on the Ti-25Nb-xHf alloys with Hf contents after anodization. Ti-25Nb-xHf ternary alloys contained from (0~15) wt.% Hf contents were manufactured by vacuum arc-melting furnace. The obtained ingots were homogenized in an argon atmosphere at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 12h and then water quenching. The specimens were cut from ingots to 3mm thickness and first ground and polished using SiC paper (grades from 100 to 2000). 2steps anodization treatments on Ti-25Nb-xHf alloys were carried out at room temperature for experiments. Micro-pore formation was performed in Ca+P mixed solution at 265V for 3min. After that, nanotube formation was in 1M $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes containing 0.8wt.% NaF solutionat 10V for 120min. Morphologies of micropore and nanotube depended on the Hf content in Ti-25Nb-xZr ternary system.

  • The relationship between precipitation and coefficient of thermal expansion of Al-6%Si-0.4%Mg-0.9%Cu-(Ti) alloy (in wt.%) after various heat treatments were studied by the thermodynamic analyzer (TMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Solution heat treatment of the alloy was carried out at 535℃ for 6 h followed by water quenching, and the samples were artificially aged in the air at 180℃ and 220℃ for 5 h. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) curve showed some residual strain and decreased with increasing aging temperature. The CTE curves changed sharply in the temperature range of 200℃ to 400℃, and the corresponding peak shifted for the aged samples due to the change in the precipitation behavior of the secondary phase. These transformation peaks in the aged sample are related to the volume of the precipitation of the Si phase as determined by DSC analysis. The change in CTE is mainly caused by the precipitation of the Si phase in the Al-Si alloy, and the size of the change occurs simultaneously with the size of the precipitate.

  • Premicellar precipitation, resolubilization and luminescing behaviors of $RuL_3^{2+}$ (L = bpy, phen, $Me_2bpy$) in aqueous alkylsulfate and sulfonate solutions were studied. Addition of the anionic surfactants to $RuL_3\;^{2+}$ solutions caused initial precipitation which was redissolved by further addition of the surfactants. The apparent solubility products $K_{sp}$'s of the precipitates were evaluated assuming 1:2 salt formation. The values were smaller as the ligand is more hydrophobic and the length of hydrocarbon chain of the surfactant is longer. The $K_{sp}$ values for L = bpy were constant over wide surfactant concentration range. However, those for L = $Me_2bpy$ and also for phen, but to less extent, increased with the surfactant concentration. The resolubilization of 1:2 salts was followed by red-shift of emission band and extensive emission quenching above critical concentration of the surfactants. The critical concentration was lower for more hydrophobic surfactant. For L = $Me_2bpy$, the blue-shifted emission band with enhanced emission intensity was observed in intermediate surfactant concentration region. The high ionic strength of media prevented the precipitate formation, but facilitated the red-shift of the emission bands. The results support that the precipitate is dissolved by accretion of surfactant anions to the salts to form water-soluble surfactant-rich $RuL_3$-surfactant anionic species. These species appeared to aggregate cooperatively to produce large clusters which exhibited the red-shifted emission.

  • The present study aims to investigate the influence of Zn addition on hardness and microstructural characteristics of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) formed by isothermal aging in Mg-9%Al and Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloys. To obtain large DPs volume fractions in the microstructure, the alloy specimens were solution-treated at 688 K for 24 h followed by water quenching, and then aged at 413 K for 48 h. The aged Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloy had higher DPs content than the Mg-9%Al alloy, indicating that the Zn addition plays a beneficial role in enhancing age-hardening response. The DPs in the Zn-containing alloy possessed the higher hardness than those of the Zn-free alloy. Microstructural examination revealed that the increased hardness of the DPs resulting from the Zn addition is closely associated with the lower α-(Mg)/β(Mg17Al12) interlamellar spacing and the higher volume fraction of β phase layer of the DPs.

  • This study was intended to investigate the influence of Al content on hardness and microstructural characteristics of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) formed by isothermal aging in Mg-8.7%Al and Mg-10%Al alloys. In order to obtain large amount of DPs in the microstructure, the alloy specimens were solution-treated at 688K for 24 h followed by water quenching, and then aged at 418K for 48h. The Mg-Al alloy with higher Al content was characterized by higher volume fraction of DPs at the same aging condition, lower interlamellar spacing of the DPs, thinner β phase layer and higher β phase content in the DPs. This is closely related to the higher velocity of discontinuous precipitation process resulting from the higher Al supersaturation in the α-(Mg) matrix. The Mg-10%Al alloy showed higher hardness of the DPs and greater difference in hardness between as-cast state and DPs than the Mg-8.7%Al alloy.

  • Work rolls used in cold rolling mills must have outstanding wear resistance and very little plastic defor- mation. Thus, these rolls require a higher surface hardness and harding to a greater depth. To meet these requirements, the rolls, in general, have basic chemical composition of 0.7 to 1.0% carbon and 1.0 to 5.0% Cr(chromium), plus a small amounts of special elements, and are subjected to intensive water quenching and tempering at low temperature to provide a surface hardness of over 90 shore. This test results are as follows. Deflection and fracture load of 5% Cr material are than those of 3% Cr material and show flat curve from surface to subsurface. It will be clear that 5% Cr work roll has a superior resisti- bility against wear and abrasion comparing with 3% Cr work roll. The improvement of wear and abrasion in 5% Cr work roll will be achieved by the large amount of wpheroidal carbide. In grindability and polish, 5% Cr work roll will be a little inferior comparing with 3% Cr work roll.

  • Damping capacities of Mg-2.5%Al and Mg-2.5%Zn (in atomic) solid solutions were comparatively investigated in order to clarify the influence of solutionized Al and Zn elements on the damping characteristics of Mg. In this study, solid solutions with similar grain size were obtained by solution treatment at 678 K for different times (24 h for Mg-2.5%Al and 36 h for Mg-2.5%Zn), followed by water quenching at RT. The Mg-2.5%Al and Mg-2.5%Zn solid solutions showed similar damping capacities in the strain-amplitude independent region of 1 × 10-6 ~ 1 × 10-5 and in the strain-amplitude dependent region below 6 × 10-4, over which the Mg-2.5%Zn solid solution possessed better damping capacity than the Mg-2.5%Al solid solution. The damping tendencies depending on strain-amplitude for the two solid solutions were analyzed and discussed in terms of similar length between weak pinning points (solutes) and different solute/dislocation interaction forces in Granato-Lücke model.

  • 600 MPa-grade deformed bar samples were manufactured by conventional hot rolling and subsequent Tempcore heat treatment processes. Considering the short-time water quenching step of the Tempcore process for hot-rolled steel, it is inevitable that the temperature profile of the deformed bar depends strongly on its position throughout the sample thickness. As a result, its microstructure can be easily divided into two regions, the surface and the core regions. The former is expected to have a fresh martensite microstructure under rapid cooling conditions, but self-tempering occurs due to the intense heat flow from the hot core region after the process. The latter is generally known to exhibit a mixed microstructure of ferrite and pearlite due to its slow cooling rate. In this study, detailed microstructural evolutions were examined through the thickness direction. The large variation of the microstructure through the thickness direction in the deformed bar samples is partly due to the easy carbon diffusion from the limited additions of alloying elements.

  • This study examined the effects of CRUD on reflood heat transfer behaviors of nuclear fuel rods during a loss-of-coolant-accident (LOCA) in a pressurized water reactor using a best-estimate thermal-hydraulic analysis code. Changes in thermal properties and boiling heat transfer characteristics of the CRUD layer were extensively reviewed, and a set of correction factors to reflect the changes was implemented into the code. A heat structure layer reflecting the effects of CRUDs on the properties was added to the outer surface of the fuel cladding. Numerical simulations were conducted to examine the effects of CRUDs on reflood cooling of overheated fuel rods for representative separate and integral effect tests, FLECHT-SEASET and LOFT. In LOFT analysis, the average cladding temperature was increased due to the low thermal conductivity of CRUD during steady-state operation; however, in both analyses, the peak cladding temperature decreased, and the quenching time was reduced. Obtained results revealed that when the porous CRUD layer is deposited on the fuel cladding, two opposite effects appear. Low thermal conductivity of the CRUD layer always increases fuel temperature during normal operation; however, its hydrophilic porous structures may contribute to accelerated reflood cooling of fuel rods during a LOCA.

  • Recently, Stainless steels have been increasingly selected as the fitting or the valve materials of water pipes as the human health issue is getting higher and higher. Therefore, the connectors attached at pipes to deliver water are exposed to more severe environments than the pipes because crevice or galvanic corrosion is apt to occur at the fittings or the valves. Effects of the solid solution annealing, cooling rate after this heat treatment, and passivation on the corrosion properties of the shell mold casted SSC13 (STS304 alloy equivalent) were studied. The heating and quenching treatment more or less reduced hardness but effectively improved corrosion resistance. It was explained by the reduction of delta ferrite contents. Independent of heat treatment, the chemical passivation treatment also lowered corrosion rate but the improvement of corrosion resistance depended on temperature and time for passivation treatment indicating that the optimum conditions for passivation treatment were the bath temperature of $34^{\circ}C$ and operating time of 10 minutes. Therefore it is suggested that the corrosion resistance of SSC13 can be effectively improved with the heat treatment, where SSC13 is heated for 10 minutes at $1120^{\circ}C$ and quenched and passivation treatment, where SSC13 is passivated for at least 10 seconds at $34^{\circ}C$ nitric acid solution.
