The water content of skin was determined using a FT near infrared (NIR) spectrometer. NIR diffuse reflectance spectra were collected from hairless mouse, in vitro, and from human inner arm, in vivo. It was found that the variation of NIR absorbance band 1450 nm from OH vibration of water and 1940 nm from the combination involving OH stretching and OH deformation, depending on the absolute water content of separated hairless mouse skin, in vitro, using the FT NIR spectrometer. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied to develop a calibration model. The PLS model showed good correlation. For practical use of the evaluation of human skin moisture, the PLS model for human skin moisture was developed in vivo on the basis of the relative water content of stratum corneum from the conventional capacitance method. The PLS model predicted human skin moisture with a standard errors of prediction (SEP) of 3.98 at 1130-1830 nm range. These studies showed the possibility of a rapid and nondestructive skin moisture measurement using FT NIR spectrometer.
Daily solar radiation is essential for water resources planning and environmental impact assessment. However, radiation data is not commonly available in Korea other than in big cities, and there has been no direct measurement for rural areas where water resources planning and environmental impact assessment is usually most needed. In general, missing radiation data is estimated from nearby regional stations within a certain distance, and this study compared two dominant methods (modified Angstrom equation and transmittance interpolation method) at six stations in Nakdong River watershed area. Two methods shows a similar level of accuracy but the transmittance interpolation method is likely to be superior in that there is no need for any measurement element since the modified Angstrom equation require the sunshine hour measurement. This study will contribute to improve water resource and water quality management in Nakdong River watershed.

The impervious area on the surface of urban area has been increased as buildings and artificial land cover have continually been increased. Urban development has gradually decreased the green zone in downtown and alienated the city from the natural environment on outskirt area devastating the natural ecosystem. There arise the environmental problems to urban area including urban heat island phenomenon, urban flood, air pollution and urban desertification. As one of urban plans to solve such problems, green roof system is attracting attentions. The purpose of this study was to investigate flood discharge and heat reduction effect according to the green roof system and to quantify effect by analyzing through simulation water and heat cycle before and after green roof system. For the analysis, Distributed hydrologic model, WEP (Water and Energy transfer Processes) and WEP+ model were used. WEP was developed by Dr. Jia, the Public Works Research Institute in Japan (Jia et al., 2005), which can simulate water and heat cycle of an urban area with complex land uses including calculation of spatial and temporal distributions of water and heat cycle components. The WEP+ is a visualization and analysis system for the WEP model developed by Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT).
EFDC model, which is capable of handling both hydrodynamic and water quality analysis has come to use for many recent studies. In order to assess the applicability of the EFDC model, it was applied to Nakdong river. Hydrodynamic and water quality analysis were carried out for Nakbon GH and HI sections chosen as the area of study with gaged data from 2008 to 2009. The comparison was made between water quality simulation results and observed data over water temperature, COD, TOC, DO, TN and TP. On the contrary, a conversion formula was derived to calculate BOD which the EFDC model cannot directly calculates and it was compared to measured data. In this study, it was determined that the EFDC model well represents the behavior of both hydrodynamics and water quality. However, further research on COD, TOC and accurate conversion of BOD needs to be conducted for efficient application to domestic water quality analysis.
For the better understanding of the temporal characteristics of soil water, this study is to suggest a stochastic soil water model and to apply it for impact assessment of climate change. The loss function is divided into 3 stages for more specified comprehension of the probabilistic behavior of soil water, and especially, the soil water model considering the stochastic characteristics of precipitation is developed in order to consider the variation of climatic factors. The simulation result of soil water model confirms that the proposed soil water model can re-generate the observation properly, and it also proves that the soil water behaves with consistent cycle based on the precipitation pattern. Moreover, with the simulation results with a climate change scenario, it can be predicted that the future soil water will have higher variations than present soil water.
Water balance has a significant impact on the overall fuel cell performance. Maintenance of proper water management should provide an adequate membrane hydration and avoidance of water flooding in the catalyst layer and gas diffusion layer. Considering the important of advanced water management in PEM fuel cell, this study proposes a simple one dimensional water transportation model of PEM fuel cell for use in a dynamic condition. The model has been created by assumption that the output is the water liquid saturation difference. The liquid saturation change is the total difference between the additional water and the removal water on the system. The water addition is obtained from fuel cell reaction and the electro osmotic drag. The water removal is obtained from capillary transport and evaporation process. The result shows that the capillary water transport of low temperature fuel cell is high because the evaporation rate is low.
An optimization model of water intake planning is developed based on a linear programming (LP) for the intelligent water purification plant operation system. The proposed optimization model minimizes the water treatment costs of raw water purification by considering a time-delay of treatment process and hourly electricity tariff, which is subject to various operation constraints, such as water intake limit, storage tank capacity, and water demand forecasts. For demonstration, the developed model is applied to H water purification center. Here, we have tested three optimization strategies and the results are compared and analyzed in economic and safety aspects. The optimization model is expected to be used as a decision support tool for optimal water intake scheduling of domestic water purification centers.
The purpose of this research is to develop a water environmental education (EE) program using streams, based on the core ideas of ENVISION and materializing elements that were extracted in this research. This research realized the elements and presented a model of the water EE program using a local stream. First, this research developed a basic model of a water EE program using streams by extracting 10 materializing elements and realizing the elements in 4 stage-procedural model. The 10 materializing elements were 1. experiencing the process of inquiry, 2. inquiring local environments, 3. self-directing learning and mutual interaction with colleagues, 4. collecting real data and interpreting, 5. utilizing the ICT(information and communication technology), 6. inquiring with the view point of the 'Environmental Studies for EE', 7. inquiring with the watershed concept, 8. inquiring with the integrating and the holistic view point, 9. pursuing the macroscopic understanding about environment, and 10. connecting the real world phenomena with the environmental concepts and theories. This research materialized these 10 elements in 4 stage model, following the previous ENVISION research, which are 1. preparing stage and visual assessment, 2. writing the report of the inquiry plan, 3. collecting the real data in the environment and performing the investigation, and 4. presenting the inquiry results. Second, with using this basic model, this research developed and presented a model of the specific water EE program using a case stream called 'Baig Cheon' stream, which is a local stream. This research is considered to have a considerable meaning in developing a EE program with ENVISION ideas for the watershed concept and inquiry with environmental science using local streams. The developed model can help the professional development of teachers and teacher education of water EE.

Nutrient (i.e., nitrogen and phosphorus) budgets are required under a 'Livestock Excreta Survey'. A nutrient budget is one of the agri-environmental indicators that calculates the difference between the inputs and outputs of the amount of nutrients within a certain boundary and for a certain time period (e.g., 1 year). In this study, a nutrients budget model was developed to effectively determine the surplus of nutrients within a region in Korea. The C# program language was used in order to facilitate the deployment of a graphical user interface (GUI) and to enhance compatibility. Also, the model was developed on Windows OS, which is the commonly used operating system in Korea. The model was based on the OECD/Eurostat nutrient budget method, and it was modified to consider manure composting procedures as well. There are key features of the nutrient budget model, including directly use of the original data sets from various input and output sources, and a collectively exchange of the address in different formats. The model can quickly show the results of various spatial and temporal resolutions with the same data, as well as perform a sensitivity analysis with coefficients and easily compareresults using tables and graphs. Further, it would be necessary to study the extension of the scope of utilization, such as the application of various nutrient budget methods. It would also be helpful to investigate both pre and postprocessing information such as linking input data through online systems.
Frequent algal blooms at major river systems in Korea have been serious social and environmental problems. Especially, the appearance of cyanobacteria with toxic materials is a threat to secure a safe drinking water. In order to model the behaviour of cyanobacteria cell number, an exclusive causality analysis using prewhitening technique was introduced to delineate effective parameters to predict the cell numbers of cyanobacteria in Seungchon Weir and Juksan Weir along Youngsan river system. Both input and output transfer function models were obtained to explain temporal variation of cyanobacteria cell number. A threshold behaviour of water temperature was implemented into the model development to consider winter characteristic of cyanobacteria. The implementation of water temperature threshold into the model structure improves the predictability in simulation. Even though the input output transfer model cannot completely explained all blooms of cyanobacteria, the simple structure of model provide a feasibility in application which can be important in practical aspect.
