  • This paper dealt with the disinfection performance by Ultra-Violet Light Emitting Diode (UV LED) for a phytoplankton as a basic study for the development of a low-energy consumption ballast water treatment system. UV LEDs having peak wavelength of 255nm, 265nm and 280nm were used in the experiment. UV LED modules with driving circuit were fabricated, and optical and electrical characteristics of them were analyzed. The disinfection performance for phytoplankton depending on the UV wavelength was evaluated by comparing the number of phytoplankton before and after the UV treatments. The experimental result showed that the highest disinfection wavelength for the phytoplankton was 265nm.

  • Disinfection of ballast water using chlorine dioxide was investigated under various initial microorganism contents, dose concentrations and pH values. Kinetics of microorganism inactivation and byproduct generation of chlorine dioxide treatment were compared with the chlorine treatment. Results of treatments with chlorine dioxide concentrations of 0 to $10mg\;Cl_2/L$ showed that The optimum concentration of chlorine dioxide required for disinfection of ballast water was 1 mg/L. The difference among the second order reaction constants for bacterial disinfection at pH 7.2 to 9.2 for chlorine dioxide was less than 5% for both bacteria. This result implied that the bactericidal effects of chlorine dioxide was independent of the pH in the examined range. On the other hand, the inactivation kinetics of chlorine for E. coli and Enterococcus decreased by 17% and 25%, respectively, when pH increased from 7.2 to 9.2. The bactericidal power of chlorine dioxide was superior to sodium hypochlorite above pH 8.2, the average pH value of sea water. Furthermore, treatments of chlorine dioxide generated less harmful byproducts than chlorine and had a long-term disinfection effect on bacteria and phytoplankton from the results of experiment for 30 days. Chlorine dioxide would be a promising alternative disinfectant for ballast water.

  • The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship's Ballast Water and Sediments was adopted at 2004 and then various BWMS (ballast water management system) have been developed. In this study, WET (whole effluent toxicity) test with algae (diatom) Skeletonema costatum as primary producer, invertebrate (rotifera) Brachionus plicatilis as 1st consumer and fish (olive flounder) Paralichthys olivaceus as predator, chemical analysis and ERA (environmental risk assessment) were conducted to assess the unacceptable effect on marine ecosystem by emitting the discharge water treated with AquaStar$^{TM}$ BWMS using electrolysis as main treatment equipment for removing the marine organisms in the ship's ballast water. The most sensitive test organism on discharge water treated with AquaStar$^{TM}$ BWMS was S. costatum that gave the NOEC value of 25.00%, LOEC value of 50.00% and 72hr-$EC_{50}$ value of 69.97% from WET test result for 20 psu salinity treated discharge water. NOEC and LOEC value of B. plicatilis and P. olivaceus exposed at 20 psu salinity treated discharge water were 50.00% and 100.00%, respectively. In the chemical analysis results, total number of substances produced by AquaStar$^{TM}$ BWMS was 18 which were bromate, 7 volatile halogenated organic compounds, 7 halogenated acetic acids, 3 halogenated acetonitriles and chloropicrin. Eighteen substances did not consider as persistence and bioaccumulative chemicals. Uncertainty of toxic property of 18 substances was high. PECs of 18 substances calculated by MAMPEC model were ranged from $4.58{\times}10^{-4}$ to $4.87{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, PNECs of them were ranged from $1.6{\times}10^{-2}$ to $3.2{\times}10^2{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$. And, the PEC/PNEC ratio of 18 substances did not exceed 1. Therefore, ERA for produced substances indicate that the discharge water treated with AquaStar$^{TM}$ BWMS does not pose unacceptable effect on marine life. And $EC_{50}$ value of S. costatum on discharge water treated by BWMS using the electrolysis had positive correlation with initial TRO concentration, concentration and kind & level of HAAs.

  • The ballast water may be discharged into another sea area with marine organisms, it caused problems to disturb the marine ecosystem. So, in order to remove these environmental risk factors, the IMO has mandated the installation of BWTS to the all ships. Our monitoring system diagnose and predict a failure of BWTS by analyzing the sensor information of BWTS collected from which the ships scattered in the ocean of several. This paper presents the design and implementation of communication modules for BWTS remote monitoring considering the satellite communication charge fee. In the our study, we implemented the safety and cost-saving communication modules by LabVIEW program. The collected sensor informations is encrypted and compressed by LabVIEW modules running on RIO. Then they will be transfer to the land server and will be decrypt to enable monitoring in the land server. For the verification, we build the test modules which can verify from collecting the sensor data to consuming them in the monitoring server. We carried out 20 times for the data pattern in all of case. So, we verified the excellent functionality and reliability through the experimental result.

  • In this paper, we studied the application of low pressure ultra-violet (UV) lamps for the development of an energy saving ship's ballast water treat (BWT) device. We proposed the optimal arrangement of UV lamps by analyzing the energy radiated from medium- and low-pressure UV lamps. Based on the experimental results, we manufactured a disinfection chamber which is composed of low-pressure UV lamps. The rated power and the treatment capacity of the chamber are 216 [W] and 10 [$m^3$/h], respectively. This can replace a disinfection chamber treated by two 2 [kW] medium pressure lamps. The disinfection performance, however the power consumption is about one-eighteen compare to the medium pressure UV lamp, is over 94 [%] for bacteria, 93 [%] for zooplankton, and 94 [%] for phytoplankton. Therefore, it would be possible to develop an energy saving BWT device in a low capacity below 100 [$m^3$/h].

  • Since Ballast Water Management Convention has been effected, BWTS, applied to new-building vessels and existing vessels, have been developed from many countries with various treatment methods. However, BWTS is mainly typed Electrolysis, Ozone and UV type. Approximately 70 products have been type approved by the Flag Administrations. For the new-building vessels, the vessels' design and construction have been considered for arrangements and installations for BWTS. However, existing vessels which already construction had finished have problem with selection of BWTS type for installation and arrangement. The selection of the most economized BWTS system is important though, CAPEX has not been made any significant differences. However, OPEX is more important factor. Consequently, detail analysis of OPEX is the key to the selection of the most economized BWTS system and also it can be the purpose of this study. The feasibility study on the main three type of BWTS (Electrolysis, Ozone and UV type) for 175K Bulk Carrier and 57K Cargo ship has been conducted for this study. Because, these three type of BWTS have been the most frequently installed and used and the two type of object vessels are consist of the 40% of the world merchant ship market. For this study, interest rate, project duration (operation time after installation), maintenance cost and fuel oil price are considered as major factor of feasibility study. In addition, expecting Interest rates to sensitivity analysis conducted for more accurate feasibility study. For 175K Bulk carrier, ozone treatment system is more economical than other types. For 57K cargo ship, UV type is considered more economical than other types. However, it is concluded that electrolysis type is more suitable compare to installation space, total weight and electrical power consumption.

  • We determined a method to determine marine planktonic organism viability using Evan's blue, Aniline blue, and 5-choromethyfluorescein diacetate (CMFDA). The Evan's blue and Aniline blue methods produced bright blue light for dead phytoplankton and zooplankton and were the best dyes to detect dead cells. The staining efficiency of Evan's blue and Aniline blue were ${\geq}90%$ of the original field sample. However, it was difficult to test the efficiency of a ship's ballast water treatment system because detection of living cells. In contrast, the CMFDA method, which is based on measuring cell esterase activity using a fluorimetric stain, was the best dye to detect live cells of almost all phytoplankton species, and staining efficiency was 70%. The CMFDA method is similar to the fluorescein diacetate (FDA) staining method. Therefore, we estimated viability of phytoplankton species using a double-staining method by combining CMFDA and FDA to determine optimum staining efficiency. As a result, the frequency of dying cells based on the double-staining method was 95%, which was significantly higher than that of single CMDFA staining. Our results suggest that a CMDFA + FDA assay is more effective to determine survival of marine plankton and that this method was applicable to investigate the efficacy of a ship's ballast water treatment system.

  • In this study, WET (whole effluent toxicity) test with Skeletonema costatum, Tigriopus japonicus and Paralichthys olivaceus and ERA (environmental risk assessment) were conducted to assess the unacceptable effect on marine ecosystem by emitting the treated discharge water from 'ARA Plasma BWTS' BWMS (ballast water management system) using filtration, Plasma and MPUV module. 34 psu treated discharge water from ARA Plasma BWTS shown slight chronic toxicity effect on the P. olivaceus ($7d-LC_{50}{\Rightarrow}100.00%$ treated discharge water, $7d-LC_{25}{\Rightarrow}85.15%$ treated discharge water). Bromobenzene, chlorobenzene and 4-chlorotoluene in 34 psu treated discharge water from ARA Plasma BWTS were higher than in the background original content of seawater. The PECs (predictive environmental concentrations) of bromobenzene, chlorobenzene and 4-chlorotoluene calculated by MAMPEC (marine antifoulant model to predict environmental concentrations) program (ver. 3.0) were 3.34E-03, 2.10E-03 and 1.73E-03 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, respectively and PNECs (predicted no effect concentrations) of them were 1.6, 0.5 and 1.9 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$. The PEC/PNEC ratio of bromobenzene, chlorobenzene and 4-chlorotoluene did not exceed one and 3 substances did not consider as persistence, bioaccumulative and toxic. Therefore, it was suggested that treated discharge water from ARA Plasma BWTS did not pose unacceptable effect on marine ecosystem.

  • Although there are various factors that threaten the security of ships, one of the most harmful is corrosion. It is not easy to find corroding areas and the status of corrosion, even though corrosion causes serious problems such as submergence and marine pollution as a result of leaking oil and polluted water. To monitor the corrosion of ships, non-destructive inspection, weight loss coupons, electrical resistance, linear polarization resistance, zero resistance ammeter, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have been developed. However, these methods require much time to detect corrosion, and most are not appropriate for real time monitoring. Coating, sacrificial anode, and impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) methods have been developed to control corrosion. The ICCP and sacrificial anode methods are the most popular ways to prevent ship corrosion. However, ICCP is only appropriate for the outside of a ship and cannot be used for complex structures such as ballast tanks because these are composed of many separate chambers. Sacrificial anodes have to be replaced periodically. This paper proposes an integrated corrosion monitoring and control system (ICMCS) that can detect corrosion in real time and is appropriate for complex structures such as ballast tanks. Because the system uses titanium for an anode, exhausted anodes do not need to be replaced.
