  • Due to the increase in population and consequently the increase in the production of plastic waste, recovery of this part of the waste is an undeniable necessity. On the other hand, the recycling of plastic waste, if it is placed in a systematic process and controlled, can be effective in creating jobs and maintaining environmental health. Waste collection in many large cities has become a major problem due to lack of proper planning with increasing waste from population accumulation and changing consumption patterns. Today, waste management is no longer limited to waste collection, but waste collection is one of the important areas of its management, i.e. training, segregation, collection, recycling and processing. In this study, a systematic method based on machine vision for sorting plastic bottles in different colors for recycling purposes will be proposed. In this method, image classification and segmentation techniques were presented to improve the performance of plastic bottle classification. Evaluation of the proposed method and comparison with previous works showed the proper performance of this method.

  • Waste accumulation is becoming a significant challenge in most urban areas and if it continues unchecked, is poised to have severe repercussions on our environment and health. The massive industrialisation in our cities has been followed by a commensurate waste creation that has become a bottleneck for even waste management systems. While recycling is a viable solution for waste management, it can be daunting to classify waste material for recycling accurately. In this study, transfer learning models were proposed to automatically classify wastes based on six materials (cardboard, glass, metal, paper, plastic, and trash). The tested pre-trained models were ResNet50, VGG16, InceptionV3, and Xception. Data augmentation was done using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) with various image generation percentages. It was found that models based on Xception and VGG16 were more robust. In contrast, models based on ResNet50 and InceptionV3 were sensitive to the added machine-generated images as the accuracy degrades significantly compared to training with no artificial data.

  • After a weight-rate disposal system for food waste has been implemented we have to install the food waste system at all apartment. In this paper, we supplied electric energy to the food waste system using solar heat panels. The weight of the food waste is displayed on the LCD panel, and its price is calculated based on its weight. Since there would be some cases that touch-typed card can't be well recognized if it is contaminated by foreign material, we designed a recognition device by no-touch sensitive card reader to embody the food waste system. The food waste system was designed using a GUI(graphical user interface) so that users can easily understand it.

  • Modern people live in the age of plastics. It has been widely used due to its easy molding processing, mass production, and excellent durability. However, over-produced plastics for convenience cause plastic disasters and adversely affect the ecosystem. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the use of single-use plastic waste due to the use of delivery services has increased. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a plastic pandemic. Currently, domestic recycling policies depend only on recycling collection companies and market prices of recyclable resources. This paper confirms whether the outbreak of COVID-19 has affected the price of plastic waste. It also shows that the price of plastic waste is more unstable than metals with a high recycling rate. This urges businesses to share the cost of recycling on plastic waste, no longer being dependent on market prices for recyclable resources.

  • Currently, due to COVID-19, household waste has a lot of impact on the environment due to packaging of food delivery. In this paper, we design and implement Faster-RCNN, SSD, and YOLOv4 models for municipal waste detection and classification. The data set explores two types of plastics, which account for a large proportion of household waste, and the types of aluminum cans. To classify the plastic type and the aluminum can type, 1,083 aluminum can types and 1,003 plastic types were studied. In addition, in order to increase the accuracy, we compare and evaluate the loss value and the accuracy value for the detection of municipal waste classification using Faster-RCNN, SDD, and YoloV4 three models. As a final result of this paper, the average precision value of the SSD model is 99.99%, the average precision value of plastics is 97.65%, and the mAP value is 99.78%, which is the best result.

  • In general, computer industry is known as clean sector, but computer is a complicated assembly which is highly hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury, Hexavalent chromium, plastics etc. This paper was presented the quantity of hazardous substances in the personal computer and the problem of its disposition-incinerating, landfilling, recycling. Also EPR which is the solution of e-waste was introduced.

  • A weight-rate disposal system for food waste has been implemented in all over the country. The food waste disposal system is a system paying service charge according to the volume of food waste, which means the more we produce waste, the more we have to pay as much.Since this policy was introduced, each of apartment, villa, etc and other buildings must install the food waste disposal system. We can say that there are strong points in this paper for us to install a weight monitor on the channel of the floor each, accumulate the fares automatically and collect the fares at the end of every month.

  • To ensure the reliability of computer programs used for the post-closure safety assessment in the Wolsong LILW Center, the results from MASCOT, SAFE-ROCK and GOLDSIM programs are compared with a problem for degradation. Advantages and disadvantages of each computer programs are individually analyzed. Effects on the individual dose are assessed with each computer programs. MASCOT and SAFE-ROCK showed similar results for $^{129}I$ and $^3H$. However, GOLDSIM represented different results for $^{129}I$ and $^3H$. It is analyzed further and compared with the fluxes in each barrier of the disposal system. Througout the benchmarking testing of the computer program, the limitation of computer program can be continuously found out for the mature post-closure safety of Korean radwaste disposal system.

  • The Irradiation test of bar code label tagged on radioactive waste container was done to determine the effect of radiation. Low and medium radioactive waste is that below total activity of 4,000 Bq/g according to the Korean nuclear law. The irradiation amount to radiate bar code label tagged on radioactive waste container was calculated by MCNP-4b computer code. The nuclide such as Co-60 and Cs-137 was assumed to contribute 50% of total activity. Real irradiation amount for bar code label was finally calculated by the dimensions of the container and the bar code label. The Identification of post and the physical deflection of irradiated bar code label was tested by the bar code reader. The coated bar code label was suitable to use on low and medium radioactive waste container.
