  • A validation of a 3D CFD model for predicting local subcooling of moderator in the vicinity of calandria tubes in a CANDU reactor is performed. The small scale moderator experiments performed at Sheridan Park Experimental Laboratory(SPEL) in Ontario, Canada[1] is used for the validation. Also a comparison is made between previous CFD analyses based on 2DMOTH and PHOENICS, and the current model analysis for the same SPEL experiment. For the current model, a set of grid structures for the same geometry as the experimental test section is generated and the momentum, heat and continuity equations are solved by CFX-4.3, a CFD code developed by AEA technology. The matrix of calandria tubes is simplified by the porous media approach. The standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model associated with logarithmic wall treatment and SIMPLEC algorithm on the body fitted grid are used and buoyancy effects are accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. For the test conditions simulated in this study, the flow pattern identified is a buoyancy-dominated flow, which is generated by the interaction between the dominant buoyancy force by heating and inertial momentum forces by the inlet jets. As a result, the current CFD moderator analysis model predicts the moderator temperature reasonably, and the maximum error against the experimental data is kept at less than $2.0^{\circ}C$ over the whole domain. The simulated velocity field matches with the visualization of SPEL experiments quite well.

  • In the present study a pre/post-processor program has been developed to be used with a general CFD code. This program is capable of performing the basic functions of the pre/post-processing, which include mesh generation and post processing plots. Also through perspective projection, this program can be used to check the quality of generated mesh by moving around inside the mesh. The smoke visualization can be also performed with the present program to visualize the smoke behavior in the case of fire simulation. The examples of the program execution are given in paper.

  • The cavity oscillation with swirling flow in hydraulic power generating systems was studied by a simple experiment and numerical simulation. Several types of fluctuation were observed in the experiment, including the cavitation surge caused by the diffuser effect and the vortex precession by the swirling flow. Both cavitation surge and vortex precession were simulated by CFD. Detailed flow structure was examined through flow visualization and CFD.

  • In this study a newly designed electro-osmotic micro-mixer is proposed. This study is composed of a channel and metal electrodes attached locally on the side wall surface ultimately to control the mixing effect. To obtain the flow patterns, numerical computation was performed by using a commercial code, CFD-ACE. The fluid-flow solutions are the cast into studying the characteristics of stirring in terms of the mixing index. It was shown that the local control of the electric potential can indeed contribute to the enhancement of mixing effect.

  • Reverse flow occurs in a channel when there is an obstruction at the entry. However it has been shown recently that reverse flow can be realized without an obstruction, by staggering the sides of the channel and placing it at an angle of attack to the oncoming flow. In this study the latter flow is computationally investigated. Studies have been carried out for different widths (gap between the two walls forming the channel), and at an angle of attack of 30. The results have captured all the essential features of this complex phenomenon and show the time dependent pumping mechanism which leads to the occurrence of reverse flow.

  • From surface flow visualization on a MIRA notchback reference model using oil flow technique, the topology of the singular points of the skin friction lines are delineated. Separation and reattachment lines at the front screen, at the A-pillar, at the C-pillar and on the rear side of the car including the trunk have been identified. It is worth to mention that two vortices emerging from the top of the trunk coil in the opposite direction as that vortices starting from the C-pillar edge. The positions of the singular points and the separation and reattachment lines and the foci of the vortices provide a sensitive database for validation of CFD-codes

  • Experimental data for the flows in a mixing tank with a bottom agitator are useful for the validation of CFD commercial code. A hybrid volume PIV measurement technique was constructed to measure the flows inside of the mixing tank. The measurement system consists of three cameras. An agitator was installed at the bottom of the tank and it rotates clockwise and counterclockwise. Using the constructed measurement system, instantaneous vector fields were obtained. A phase averaging technique was adopted for the measured instantaneous three-dimensional velocity vector fields. Turbulent properties were evaluated from the instantaneous vector fields.

  • In this study, a CFD code is developed to perform simulation of the surface and internal flow of a three-dimensional rectangular cavity driven by an external gas flow. Investigated in this study are surface characteristic such as surface tension, surface dilational viscosity(or surface elasticity), and surface viscosity. Visualization of the surface of water is performed to compare with the numerical results obtained with the developed in-house code. We have found that the surface flow is very sensitive to the surface tension and other configurations. The surface flow velocity obtained from the numerical solution is lower than the experimental result.

  • The flow field measurements were conducted on the planes between impeller blades, and the gap between the impeller and turbine blades under speed ratio of 0.4. The study showed that high velocity regions move from locations near the suction surface of the impeller to the pressure blade, shroud corner as flow progresses from the mid-chord of impeller passage to exit and out into the gap region. Planes 3 through 5 also showed flow reversal occurring in the area near the shell surface and progress far into the impeller passage from the impeller passage exit, near shell surface. This affected the converter efficiency negatively. This study would aid in the construction of higher accuracy CFD models of this complex turbomachinery device.
