  • It is important to retrieve effectively the visual media such as pictures and video in the internet, especially to the application areas such as electronic art museum, e-commerce, and internet shopping malls. It is also needed in these areas to have content-based or even semantic-based multimedia retrieval instead of simple keyword-based retrieval. In our earlier research, we proposed a semantic-based visual media retrieval framework for the effective retrieval of the visual media from the internet. It uses visual media metadata and ontology based on the web service to achieve the semantic-based retrieval. In this research, there are more than one visual media service providers and one central service broker. As a preliminary step to the visual media data retrieval, a method is proposed to retrieve the service providers effectively. The method uses the structure of the ontology tree to obtain the providers and their rankings. It also uses the size of sub nodes and child nodes in the tree. It measures the rankings of providers more effectively than previous method. The experimental results show the accuracy of the method while keeping compatible speed against the existing method.

  • Nowadays, portable digital cameras such as smart phone cameras are being popularly used for entertainment and visual information recording. Given a database of geo-tagged images, a visual location recognition system can determine the place depicted in a query photo. One of the most common visual location recognition approaches is the bag-of-words method where local image features are clustered into visual words. In this paper, we propose a new bag-of-words-based visual location recognition algorithm using time-series streetview database. The proposed algorithm selects only a small subset of image features which will be used in image retrieval process. By reducing the number of features to be used, the proposed algorithm can reduce the memory requirement of the image database and accelerate the retrieval process.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to explain and analyze visual descriptors of MPEG-7 for representing multimedia content. This study describes MPEG-7 visual descriptors that are made of color, shape, texture, and motion using some examples and application areas in detail. As a result, those visual descriptors can represent the rich and deep features in multimedia contents domain. Also, the use of those descriptors will increase the retrieval effectiveness as well as the interoperability among systems through the consistency of the content representation.

  • Information retrieval is one of the most challenging areas in which the ontology technology is effectively used. Among them image retrieval using the image meta data and ontology is the one that can substitute the keyword-based image retrieval. In the paper, the retrieval of visual media such as the art image and photo picture is handled. It is assumed that there are more than one service providers of the visual media and also there is one central service broker that mediates the user's query. Given the user's query the first step that must be done in the service broker is to get the list of candidate service providers that fit the query. This is done by defining various ontologies such as the service ontology and matching the query against the ontology and providers. A novel matching method based on the ASN.1. The experiment shows that the method is more effective than existing tree-based and interval-based methods. Ontology merging issue is also handled that can happen when the service providers register their service into the service broker. An effective method is also proposed.

  • The traditional way of access to image information is through descriptive keyword searching. However, many studies in image indexing and retrieval have reached a consensus on the difficulties and limitations of text-base image description. This research investigates the feasibility of using visual browsing that is being used comparatively much less than keyword searching. The effectiveness of Keyword access versus visual access were examined through experiments in which participants searched for pictures of specified emotions using different access modes: keywords only, visual browsing only, and the combination of both. It was found that keyword searching was appropriate for clean searches while visual browsing was the effective way to browse many pictures quickly, thus finding more relevant pictures. Findings and results can guide of images retrieval systems, especially the retrieval system of subjective and interpretive information.

  • The need for content-based retrieval from visual media, such as image and video data, is ever increasing rapidly in many applications, such as electronic art museums, internet shopping malls, internet search engines, and medical information systems. In our previous research, we proposed an architecture, called the HERMES, which is a Web Service-enabled visual media retrieval framework. In this paper, we propose the Web Service workflows that are employed in the HERMES. We describe how we designed the workflows for service registration and query processing in the framework. We especially explain how metadata and ontology can be utilized to realize more intelligent content-based retrieval on visual media data.

  • To retrieve complex data such as images in multimedia information, we need the content-based retrieval methods based on the visual properties rather than keywords. In this paper, a contrent-based image retrieval system is desinged and implemented to retrieve images using the features of images such as colors, lines and intensity vetor features when a visual query inputs. The contents for image retrievals are the color features extracted from the color component of 16 blocks of the image, th eline features extracted form 4 lines in the image and the shape features extracted from the intensity vectors of the 16 blocks. We can either use a whole image or a sketch image for query. As the experimental results demonstrate the precision 91% the recall 33% and the average rank 3.1 the retrieval performance is found to be high. The experimental results indicate that the retrieval using the weighted features have led to substantial improvement in the percision and performance of system.

  • A variety of multimedia applications require multimedia database management systems to manage multimedia data, such as text, image, and video, as well as t support content-based image or video retrieval. In this paper we design and implement a content-based image retrieval system, BADA-IV/I$^2$R(Image Information Retrieval), which is developed based on BADA-IV multimedia database management system. In this system image databases can be efficiently constructed and retrieved with the visual features, such as color, shape, and texture, of image. we extend SQL statements to define image query based on both annotations and visual features of image together. A high-dimensional index structure, called CIR-tree, is also employed in the system to provide an efficient access method to image databases. We show that BADA-IV/I$^2$R provides a flexible way to define query for image retrieval and retrieves image data fast and effectively: the effectiveness and performance of image retrieval are shown by BEP(Bull's Eye Performance) that is used to measure the retrieval effectiveness in MPEG-7 and comparing the performance of CIR-tree with those of X-tree and TV-tree, respectively.

  • As development of digital technology, many kinds of multimedia data are used variously and requirements for effective use by user are increasing. In order to transfer information fast and precisely what user wants, effective retrieval method is required. As existing multimedia data are impossible to apply the MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 technologies which are aimed at compression, store and transmission. So MPEG-7 is introduced as a new technology for effective management and retrieval of multimedia data. In this paper, we extract content-based features using color descriptor among the MPEG-7 standardization visual descriptor, and reduce feature data applying PCA(Principal Components Analysis) technique. We model the cerebral cortex and hippocampal neural network in engineering domain, and team content-based feature vectors fast and apply the hippocampal neural network algorithm to compose of optimized feature. And then we present fast and precise retrieval effect when indexing and retrieving.

  • In this paper, we present the HVIS (Hybrid Video Information System) which bolsters up meaning retrieval of all the various users by integrating feature-based retrieval and annotation-based retrieval of unformatted formed and massive video data. HVIS divides a set of video into video document, sequence, scene and object to model the metadata and suggests the Two layered Hybrid Object-oriented Metadata Model(THOMM) which is composed of raw-data layer for physical video stream, metadata layer to support annotation-based retrieval, content-based retrieval, and similarity retrieval. Grounded on this model, we presents the video query language which make the annotation-based query, content-based query and similar query possible and Video Query Processor to process the query and query processing algorithm. Specially, We present the similarity expression to appear degree of similarity which considers interesting of user. The proposed system is implemented with Visual C++, ActiveX and ORACLE.
