The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the physical characteristics and tranquility of the valleys located in Gangwon region. For this study we analyzed the field survey data 135 valleys using GIS. The elements for measurement of tranquility were divided into visual elements including terrain, objects, forest, water and auditory elements including noise. These elements were divided further into positive and negative factors. The weight of each element and item was calculated by applying the AHP method. The results of this study are as follows. The length of the valley ranged from 126 m to 17 km, and the elevation ranged from 40 m to 1,800 m. Type of mixed forest was common in the valleys. The depth of the water was over 20 cm in 83% of the total area and most of the water was in good condition in visual quality. Regarding the positive factors of tranquility, the weighted scores of the objects, waterfall sounds and visual transparence of the water were of relatively high value. Relatively high values were also shown in closed and curved topography in the landform, forest type and natural forests. In the negative factors, the weights of the objects and forest elements had high values. Within the facility groups, facility of the river produced a considerable negative. After applying the index of tranquility, the natural physical attributes affected the tranquility value, more than the manmade structures to a much greater degree.
Pro-environmental life styles, foundations of a collective civilization and preservation of our tradition at rural communities hold a great public profit value, of which importance has been strongly emphasized during last decade. Here, the environmental color is one of the most influential elements that determine the image of the rural landscape. Whenever an alternative color element is introduced to rural town, it is very important to examine its effect on the existing environmental color. Typically, a preference-surveying method has been used to evaluate the suitability of such environmental color balance. However, we note that the reliability of this method is limited by the subjectivity of a respondent. And thus, it is highly desirable to develop a more objective method. We propose a feasibility study for using an aesthetic-measure to evaluate the environmental color of a rural town. In this work, we looked into the validity of our approach by comparing its result with that of the preference-based-method as a way to determine the environmental color. Our study is based on 20 photo images from Ansung-city Yangsung-myeon Donghang 2ri Kyo-dong town in Kyongki Province.
BACKGROUND: Nitrogen (N) is an important element for turfgrass (Zoysia matrella) growth; however, standard N application rate for turfgrass is not established yet. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of N application rates on the growth and quality of turfgrass for establishment of standard N application rate. METHODS AND RESULTS: Treatments were as follows; control (0 N g/m2/month), 1N (1 N g/m2/month), 2N(2 N g/m2/month), 3N (3 N g/m2/month), 4N (4 N g/m2/month), and 5N (5 N g/m2/month). N application improved visual turfgrass quality. Compared with the control, clipping yield of all N treatments increased by 90~194%. The grass shoot weight of 3N, 4N, and 5N treatments increased by 52%, 43%, and 111%, respectively, and the stolon weight of 4N and 5N treatments increased by 412% and 201%, respectively, compared to the control. The N uptake amount and N recovery rate were estimated to be 4.10~6.28 g/m2 and 14~58%, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): These results indicate that considering visual quality, clipping yield, N uptake amount, and N recovery, the application rate of 2~3 N g/m2/month was suggested to be suitable for Z. matrella production.
The aim of this study is to provide practical guide for exterior design in apartment and to propose a device to improve the quality of residential environment by the color planning. Color is a language of context and used as a visual aid to recognize the objects and spaces in the world around us. In this sense, each color perception is unique to its own setting and not subject to any universal rules of thumbs, Therefore, when designing with color, each setting will demand its own specific set of rules. A balanced color scheme has to make the environment more pleasant for people to live in . Fro the exterior in housing the use of color has to be considered not just in its wider context of the architecture or surrounding but as an element of the life of the inhabitant. So it is considered on the type of people who will live in and visual condition of site. In this study , the objective model of systematic design process for environmental color planning is proposed on the basis of theroetical background and references investigated, By the existing thesis, resident's preference of the exterior color and foumular of composition in apartment was invastigated . In general theories, based on the theory Birren's color harmony for color coordination an design principles, a device of exterior color design in apartment was suggested by the course of reasonable design process. Color in environment plays many different roles. It integrates the architecture with the site. If color is use well, it can soften architecture that is too harsh, it can give a sense of identity to different part of site and improve a city's image. The environmental color is effective media to enhance the aesthetic value of architecture and environment.
The aim of the present contribution is to consider and underline the essential interactions among the historical knowledge, the seismic vulnerability assessment, the investigation experimental tools, the preservation of the architectural quality and the strengthening design in regard to architectural heritage conservation. These topics are argued in relation to Palazzo Murena in Perugia, designed in the eighteenth century by the famous Architect Luigi Vanvitelli, and currently headquarters of the city's University. Based on the surveys and the visual inspections, a preliminary a priori global analysis has been performed by means of the FME method. The obtained results permitted to plan an experimental tests campaign inclusive of structural health monitoring. The new achieved "knowledge" of the building allowed to refine the seismic safety assessment. In particular it was highlighted that the "mezzanine floor" can be a vulnerable element of the building with the collapse of its masonry walls. Preserving the architectural characteristics, a local reinforcement intervention is proposed for the above-mentioned level; this consists of the application of plaster with FRCM, assuring an adequate strength, without burden the masonry structure with additional weight, and therefore a decreasing of the seismic vulnerability. The necessity to consider, in this ongoing research, other local mechanisms is highlighted in the unfolding of the last part of work.
The purpose of this study is to suggest a direction for eco-friendly healing space design for healthcare facilities in the future. Theoretical review and case study on the concept of sustainable design, spatial expression and behavioral affordance were used as research method. Through these reviews, the 3 elements of the total healing environment -physical, psychological and social- have correspondence with elements of spatial expression; Refuge, Flow, Prospect and Void. And these are related to the eight kinds of Behavioral affordance which are subdivided into WORK&STUDY, REST, CIRCULATION, VISUAL SEQUENCE, SOCIAL EXCHANGE, REFRESHMENT, COMMUNITY and MEDITATION. And the concept of sustainable design consists of 6 principles ; Natural system, People, Place, The cycle of life, Energy & natural resources and Process. Through correlation analysis of behavioral affordance and 6 principles, the result of this study presents that the physical elements of the total healing space was mainly associated with the principles of people, place and the cycle of life. Psychological element was related to principle of natural system, human, place and process. And social element was associated with the principles of human, place and process. According to this analysis, the case study of four low-rise eco-friendly medical facilities was undertaken. Sustainability was evaluated in total healing environmental through this case study.
Automated damage detection through Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques has become an active area of research in the bridge engineering community but widespread implementation on in-service infrastructure still presents some challenges. In the meantime, visual inspection remains as the most common method for condition assessment even though collected information is highly subjective and certain types of damage can be overlooked by the inspector. In this article, a Frequency Response Functions-based model updating algorithm is evaluated using experimentally collected data from the University of Central Florida (UCF)-Benchmark Structure. A protocol for measurement selection and a regularization technique are presented in this work in order to provide the most well-conditioned model updating scenario for the target structure. The proposed technique is composed of two main stages. First, the initial finite element model (FEM) is calibrated through model updating so that it captures the dynamic signature of the UCF Benchmark Structure in its healthy condition. Second, based upon collected data from the damaged condition, the updating process is repeated on the baseline (healthy) FEM. The difference between the updated parameters from subsequent stages revealed both location and extent of damage in a "blind" scenario, without any previous information about type and location of damage.
This study, with teachers form elementary schools in Chungju-si as its subjects, has investigated influence of school forest on satisfaction with school greenspace and environmental education. It has reached the following conclusions. As for recognition of and satisfaction of school greenspace there were meaningful differences between teachers form school forest model schools and ones from common schools, which was thought to be due to positive effects of school forest movement. It appeared that environmental education was carried out through audio-visual materials once a week in most schools. On the other hand, as for class places, 'classroom in parallel with outdoor class' and 'classroom education' appeared to be carried out most frequently in the case of school forest model schools, and 'classroom education' in the case of common schools. However, considering the fact that 'field learning' the most important element in environmental education, appeared to be carried out least frequently in both of the groups, which suggests that we should improve it for future through introduction of various field-experience learning programs. As a result of the survey of satisfaction with environmental education, some meaningful differences were recognized between school forest schools and common schools, and 'presence or absence of field learning spaces' was the most frequently answered reason for 'satisfied' and 'unsatisfied'. Thus, 'schools' and related institutions' enthusiastic efforts are needed for providing field-experience spaces where children can directly access to and explore into nature.
