When a slow-moving vehicle occupies one of the lanes of a multi-lane highway, it often causes queuing behind, unlike one is caused by an actual stoppage on that lane. This happens when the traffic flow rate upstream from the slow vehicle exceeds a certain critical value. This phenomena is called as the Moving Bottleneck, defined by Gazis and Herman (1992), Newell (1998) [3], and Munoz and Daganzo (2002), who conducted the flow estimates of upstream and downstream and considered slow-moving vehicle speed and the flow ratio exceeding slow vehicle and the microscopic traffic flow characteristics of moving bottleneck. But, a study of delay on moving bottleneck was not conducted until now. So this study provides a average delay time model related to upstream flow and the speed of slow vehicle. We have chosen the two-lane highway and homogeneous traffic flow. A slow-moving vehicle occupies one of the two lanes. Average delay time value is a result of AIMSUN[9], the microscopic traffic flow simulator. We developed a multiple regression model based on that value. Average delay time has a high value when the speed of slow vehicle is decreased and traffic flow is increased. Conclusively, the model is formulated by the negative exponential function.

This paper introduces the autonomous vehicle Pharos, which participated in the 2010 Autonomous Vehicle Competition organized by Hyundai-Kia motors. PHAROS was developed for high-speed on/off-road unmanned driving avoiding diverse patterns of obstacles. For the high speed traveling up to 60 km/h, long range terrain perception, real-time path planning and high speed vehicle motion control algorithms are developed. This paper describes the major hardware and software components of our vehicle.

In new generation vehicle technologies, a fuel cell vehicle becomes more important, by virtue of their emission merits. In addition, a fuel cell is considered as a major source to generate the electricity for vehicles in near future. This paper focuses on modeling of not only an electric vehicle and but also a fuel cell vehicle to estimate performances. And an EV cart is manufactured to verify the modeling. Speed, voltage, and current of the vehicle and modeling are compared to estimate them at acceleration test and driving mode test. The estimations are also compared with the data of the Ballard Nexa fuel cell stack. In order to investigate a fuel cell based vehicle, motor and fuel cell models are integrated in a electric vehicle model. The characteristics of individual components are also integrated. Calculated fuel cell equations show good agreements with test results. In the fuel cell vehicle simulation, maximum speed and hydrogen fuel consumption are estimated. Even though there is no experimental data from vehicle tests, the vehicle simulation showed physically-acceptable vehicle characteristics.

This paper presents and implements a vehicle speed measurement system using a license plate recognition system and a stereo camera. Using the feature points of the license plate recognition system, the disparity information is extracted and then the distance to the feature points is calculated by using the disparity information. In this paper, a vehicle speed is measured using the adjacent distances from consecutive stereo images and the corresponding time of the distances. Actual vehicle speed is also measured using the reference measurement equipment (tape switch based system) in order to test the accuracy of the proposed speed measurement system. The implemented stereo based speed measurement system shows appropriate result within specification both in the daytime and nighttime experiments.

This paper try to identify the minimum speed of vehicles in collision between pedestrian head and windshield at vehicle-pedestrian accidents. The MADYMO program was used with NF Sonata vehicle and pedestrian in height of 160cm, 170cm, and 180cm. From the simulation results, it was found that the minimum speed of vehicle was different for each pedestrian height : 49km/h for 160cm, 41km/h for 170cm, and 29km/h for 180cm. The results could be used in speed estimating process when there is a collision trace between pedestrian head and windshield at vehicle- pedestrian accident investigation.

In this analysis, a method is presented to calculate the critical speed of a railway vehicle by using a multibody dynamic model. The contact conditions and contact forces between the wheel and the rail are formularized for the wheelset model. This is combined with the bogie model to obtain a multibody dynamic model of a railway vehicle with constraint conditions. First-order linear dynamic equations with independent coordinates are derived from the constraint equations and dynamic equations of railway vehicles using the QR decomposition method. Critical speeds are calculated for the wheelset and bogie dynamic models through an eigenvalue analysis. The influences of the design parameters on the critical speed are presented.

Recently, four-wheel steering systems have been developed and studied as one of the latest automotive technologies for improving the handling characteristics of a vehicle. In much of the proposed four-wheel steering systems, the side slip angle at the vehicle's center of gravity is maintained at zero. This approach allows the greater maneuverability at low speed by means of counter-phase rear steering and the improved stability at high speed through same-phase rear steering. In this paper, the effects of several four-wheel steering systems are studied and discussed on the responsiveness and stability of the vehicle by using the linear analysis. Especially, the effects of the cornering stiffnesses of both front and rear wheels are investigated on the yaw velocity gain and critical speed of the vehicle.

The architecture of WSN based Vehicle Speed Measurement System is presented in this paper from Telematics Sensor Network(TSN) to Management System. To verify the feasibility of the system, we implemented the vehicle speed measurement system and evaluated the accuracy of velocity measured by the system in our testbed, an old highway located near Kyungbu highway. The system performed over 95% of accuracy at 80kmph from the measurement. In addition, the battery life time of the sensor node was evaluated by simulation analysis with real measured current consumption profiles. Assuming the maximum average daily traffic in 2005, the battery life time is expected to be over 1.6 year from the simulation result.

The tire delivering power generated from engine to the ground pulls a vehicle to move. Radius of tires is changeable due to elasticity that depends on the speed of vehicle and traction force. The main objectives on this study are real time measurement of dynamic radius and slip ratio according to the speed and traction force. The dynamic radius is proportional to speed and traction force. According to measurement, the dynamic radius is increased about 3mm under 100km/h compared to stop. It is also increased about 1.5mm when a traction force is supplied as much as 4kN compared to no load state at low speed. There is no strong relationship between slip ratio and vehicle speed. The slip ratio is measured up to 4% under WOT at first stage gear. Through this research, the method of measuring dynamic radius and slip ratio is set up and is expected to be applied to the measurement of traction force in chassis dynamometer or accelerating and climbing ability.

The transient brake time or distance is one of very important factors to guess the vehicle speed to inspect an automobile accident. But, it is usual that the vehicle speed is estimated by using only skid mark without considering the transient brake distance. Deceleration and the friction coefficients of tire and road surface play an important role in calculating the brake distance. In this paper, a scheme is presented to estimate more accurate automobile speed. The scheme contains the effect of the transient brake distance on the speed. Experiment was carried out on the asphalt, unpacked road to get relationships between the speeds and the skid mark distances, and to get the transient brake time. The experimental results were utilized to construct the equation to approximate more realistic vehicle speeds.
