  • Even though 30inch optical telescope at Kyung Hee Astronomy Observatory has been used to produce a series of scientific achievements since its first light in 1992, numerous difficulties in operating of the telescope have hindered the precise observations needed for further researches. Since the currently used PC-TCS(Personal Computer based Telescope Control System) software based on ISA-bus type is outdated, it doesn't have a user friendly interface and make it impossible to scale. Also accumulated errors which are generated by discordance from input and output signals into a motion controller required new control system. Thus we have improved the telescope control system by updating software and modifying mechanical parts. We applied a new BLDC(brushless DC) servo motor system to the mechanical parts of the telescope and developed a control software using Visual Basic6.0. As a result, we could achieve a high accuracy in controlling of the telescope and use the user friendly GUI(Graphic User Interface).

  • The emotional interface is essential technology for the robot to provide the proper service to the user. In this research, we developed emotional components for the service robot such as a neural network based facial expression recognizer, emotion expression technologies based on 3D graphical face expression and joints movements, considering a user's reaction, behavior selection technology for emotion expression. We used our humanoid robots, AMI and AMIET as the test-beds of our emotional interface. We researched on the emotional interaction between a service robot and a user by integrating the developed technologies. Emotional interface technology for the service robot, enhance the performance of friendly interaction to the service robot, to increase the diversity of the service and the value-added of the robot for human. and it elevates the market growth and also contribute to the popularization of the robot. The emotional interface technology can enhance the performance of friendly interaction of the service robot. This technology can also increase the diversity of the service and the value-added of the robot for human. and it can elevate the market growth and also contribute to the popularization of the robot.

Development of a user-friendly and transparent non-linear analysis program for RC walls

  • Advanced forms of structural design (e.g., displacement-based methods) require knowledge of the non-linear force-displacement behavior of both the overall building and individual lateral load resisting elements, i.e., walls or building cores. Similarly, understanding the non-linear behaviour of the elements in a structure can also allow for a less conservative structural response to be calculated by better understanding the cracked (i.e., effective) properties of the various RC elements. Calculating the non-linear response of an RC section typically involves using 'black box' analysis packages, wherein the user may not be in complete control nor be aware of all the intricate settings and/or decisions behind the scenes. This paper introduces a user-friendly and transparent analysis program for predicting the back-bone force displacement behavior of slender (i.e., flexure controlled) RC walls, building cores or columns. The program has been validated and benchmarked theoretically against both commonly available and widely used analysis packages and experimentally against a database of 16 large-scale RC wall test specimens. The program, which is called WHAM, is written using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to promote transparency and allow users to further develop or modify to suit individual requirements. The program is available free-of-charge and is intended to be used as an educational tool for structural designers, researchers or students.

  • In recent decades, focuses on usability and emphases on user-centric design have become more prevalent in the field of software design. However, it is not always easy for engineers and computer scientists to think in the users' shoes. Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a field of study that focuses on creating technologies easier and more intuitive for the users. This paper is based on teaching HCI skills to undergraduate computer science students in a software application design course. Specifically, this paper employs: first, the HCI skills taught to the students; second, the tendencies and challenges of the students in creating user-centric applications; and lastly, suggestions based on our findings to promote HCI in developing user-friendly software. While more firm conclusions shall be reserved for more formal empirical studies, the findings in this paper still offer implications and suggestions for promoting user-centric approach for software designers and developers in the technology industry.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest configuration methods of sensor according to user's behaviors in the ubiquitous house. Recently, with appearing the concept of 'Ubiquitous', the applications of ubiquitous technologies on the our environment adopt a new paradigm. This new paradigm leads to the possibility of creating more intellectual dwelling environment according to user's behaviors. This paper suggests to change our dwelling by considering both engineering technology and considering the character of dwelling, because the house should provide causes humans with comfortability. Therefore, we need to understand user's behaviors in the dwelling, towards user friendly environment.

  • Polishing a die that has free-form surfaces is a time-consuming and tedious job, and requires a considerable amount of high-precision skill. Some workers tend to gradually avoid the polishing work because of the poor environment caused by dust and noise. In order to reduce the polishing time and cope with the shortage of skilled workers, a user-friendly automatic polishing system was developed in this research. The polishing system with five degrees of freedom is able to keep the polishing tool normal to the die surface. The polishing system is controlled by a PC-NC controller. To easily operate the developed polishing robot system, this study developed an integrated program in the Windows environment. This program consists of four modules: the polishing module, the graphic simulator, the polishing data generation module, and the teaching module. Also, the automatic teaching system was developed to easily obtain teaching data and it consists of a three dimensional joystick and a proximity sensor. The joystick is used to simultaneously drive the polishing system to an arbitrary orientation and the proximity sensor is used to obtain teaching points precisely. Also, to evaluate the stability of the driving program and the teaching system, polishing experiments of a die of saddle shape were carried out.

  • 기존의 센서 네트워크 시뮬레이터는 배터리 기반의 센서를 모델링 하고, 이를 기반으로 한 MAC프로토콜 및 라우팅 프로토콜 등을 제공하고 있다. 최근에 에너지 수집형 센서들이 활발히 연구되면서 이를 위한 시뮬레이터의 필요성이 증가하고 있는데 비해, 해당하는 연구는 미미한 수준이다. 에너지 수집형 센서 시스템을 위한 시뮬레이터들은 기존 시뮬레이터의 에너지 모델과는 달리 에너지 수집 모델과 재충전 가능 배터리 모델, 에너지 소비 모델이 결합된 새로운 에너지 모델을 필요로 한다. 아울러 태양 에너지 기반 센서 네트워크를 위해 제안된 잘 알려진 MAC 및 라우팅 프로토콜들도 기본적으로 제공하여야 하고, 사용자가 쉽게 시뮬레이터를 활용할 수 있도록 사용자 친화형 인터페이스도 제공되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 Castalia 시뮬레이터를 분석하여, 이를 기반으로 사용자 친화형 태양 에너지 기반 센서 네트워크 시뮬레이터를 제안한다.

  • 최근 치과 인상 채득법은 인상재를 사용하는 전통적 방법에서 구내스캐닝을 이용한 디지털 인상방법으로 빠르게 발전하고 있다. 현재 치과시장에는 적어도 10개 이상의 구내스캐너가 있다. 하지만 기술과 디자인이 빠르게 발전하는 가운데 다양한 제품들 중 사용자가 합리적인 선택을 할 수 있는 기준이 명확하지 않다. 이 문헌고찰에서는 다양한 인체공학적 디자인 관련 논문을 토대로 한 근거자료를 통하여 사용자의 입장에서 가장 사용이 편리하고 알맞은 인체공학적 디자인을 제안하고자 한다. 이를 통하여 구내스캐너의 인체공학적 디자인의 중요성을 한번 더 확인하고 알맞은 인체공학적 구내스캐너의 제시를 통하여 사용자(치과의사)들의 근골격의 질환과 장애를 예방하고자 한다.

사용자 친화적 시스템 구성을 위한 LED 보드 최적화 설계 (LED Board Optimization Design for User-Friendly System Configuration)

  • 본 논문은 MCU와 LED 드라이버를 활용한 감마 보정, 논 플리커, 구동 소음 제거 등의 개선 방안을 적용하여 LED 시스템의 사용자 친화적 시스템을 구성하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 실험 결과, LED 드라이버의 22kHz PWM 모드는 가청 주파수 바깥 영역에서 소음이 발생하여 사용자는 실질적으로 소음을 인지할 수 없었으며, 정상 동작 구간인 지연율 5% 이내의 풀업 저항 값은 3kHz PWM 모드 시 1kΩ ~ 10kΩ 이며, 22kHz PWM 모드는 1kΩ ~ 2kΩ 로 확인되었다. 또한, 감마 보정을 통해 비선형적인 인간의 시각 시스템에 맞게 최적화하여 정확한 대비와 명암을 표현할 수 있으며, 결과적으로 기존의 LED 시스템보다 더 자연스럽고 정확한 표현이 가능한 LED 시스템의 개발과 사용자의 시각적인 경험을 개선할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

강원랜드 스키장 설계 (Design for the Kangwonland Ski Resort)

  • This design was submitted to an invited competition for the Ski Resort of Kangwon Land which was held by Kangwon Land Resort in August, 2003. The site is located at 1∼17 Gohan-ri Gohan-eup Jungsungun Kangwon-do and has an area of 5,000,000$m^2$. The objectives of this project were to revitalize the local economy of Sabuk, Gohan which is well Down for deserted coal mines, by creating a resort complex for family group users with an environmentally friendly ski facility. This design scheme addresses three areas of concerns: First, how to boost the local economy through the proposed ski resort. By limiting lodging facilities in the ski resort, we could induce more development in the nearby towns. In order to balance the economical benefit to towns of Sabuk and Gohan, we decided to have two separate ski base facilities in each town boundary. Second, how to encourage family-oriented use of the ski resort by designing user-friendly ski slope, especially for beginner skiers. We designed 50% more beginner-level ski slope compared to average ski resorts. Third, how to make environmentally-friendly ski resort by respecting the original land form. We minimized the damage to the natural environment by protecting valuable tree groves. Also, ski slopes are designed to reduce unnecessary earth movement. This was designed under the assumption that more valley-oriented slopes would result in less cutting and banking of earthwork; this assumption was verified in comparison with other ski resorts. It is expected that this desist would serve environmentally-friendly designs in ski slopes.
