  • This experimental study was devoted to investigate skin friction of H group piles with uplift loading conditions in granite soil under laboratory test. Model piles made of steel embedded in weathered granite soil were used in this study. Pile arrangements($2{\times}2,\;3{\times}3$), pile space(2D, 4D, 6D), and soil density($D_r=40%,\;80%$) were tested. The main results obtained from the model tests can be summarized as follows. The series of tests found that ultimate uplift load and displacement for group piles were increased as piles space ratio increases to $D_r=40%$ of soil density. In the relative density of $D_r=80%$, bearing capacity for group piles was greater than for single pile. In the relative density of $D_r=40%$, the theoretical value of skin friction for group piles was greater than practical value. In the relative density of $D_r=80%$, both theoretical and practical value of skin friction for group piles were increased as piles space ratio increases.

  • Anchors are primarily designed and constructed to resist outwardly directed loads imposed on the foundation of a structure. These outwardly directed loads are transmitted to the soil at a greater depth by the anchors. Buried anchors have been used for thousands of years to stabilize structures. Various types of earth anchors are now used for the uplift resistance of transmission towers, utility poles, submerged pipelines, and tunnels. Anchors are also used for the tieback resistance of earth-retaining structures, waterfront structures, at bends in pressure pipelines, and when it is necessary to control thermal stress. In this research, we analyzed the uplift behavior of plate anchors in clay using a laboratory experiment to estimate the uplift behavior of plate anchors under various conditions. To achieve the research purpose, the uplift resistance and displacement characteristics of plate anchors caused by the embedment ratio, plate diameter, and loading rate were studied, compared, and analyzed for various cases.

  • Helical anchors are foundation structure that designed to resist uplift loads are installed by applying in load to shaft while rotating it into the ground. These can be a cost effective means of proving tension anchorage for foundation where soil conditions permit their installation because of ease of installation. At present time, tapered helical anchors are commonly used to carry uplift loads. The uplift capacity includes the following factors : the height of overburden above the top helix, the resistant along a cylinder, the weight of the soil in the cylinder and suction force. In order to make clear behavior characteristics of helical anchors with pullout, model tests were conducted with respect to various embedment depth, space of helix, shape of helix. Based on the experimental study, the following conclusions are drawn. 1) The uplift capacity of multi helical anchors increase with embedment ratio of anchors The increase is smooth after critical uplift capacity. 2) Critical breakout factors and critical embedment ratio of multi helical anchor exist 7∼8, 4∼6 respectively. 3) Variation of uplift capacity with helix spaces show down after S/D=5. 4) Critical breakout factors of helical anchor in the laboratory test are similar to Das's theory.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the effect of machinery house location on the stability of high efficiency gantry crane which can improve the productivity of the container transportation wok by reducing cycle time. The wind load was evaluated according to 'Load Criteria of Building Structures' enacted by the ministry of construction & transportation. The uplift forces of high efficiency gantry crane under this wind load were calculated by analyzing reaction forces at each supporting point. And variation of reaction forces at each supporting point was analyzed according to machinery house location.

  • A new load surface method for reliability of caisson type breakwater was proposed. Linear functions for horizontal wave force and uplift force were estimated by using water level and wave height then they were applied to the reliability analysis of breakwater using first order reliability method(FORM). In the numerical example, sliding and overturning failure probability of caisson type breakwater were analyzed by using load surface and they were compared with those by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This study was carried out to amlyze and compare the stability of a 50ton container crane according to various wind load design codes. The wind load was evaluated according to 'The Specification of Port Facilities and Equipments / Specification for the design of crane structures (KS A 1627)' and 'Load Criteria of Building Structures' effected by the ministry of construction & transportation And the uplift forces qf a container crane under this wind load were estimated by amlyzing reaction forces at each supporting point and compared each other. From this study, we noticed that the design wind velocity criteria need to be defined specifically when the wind load is evaluated to design a container crane. And we verified the necessity of the estimation of the uplift forces at each supporting point to analyze a structural stability of a container crane and the maximum compressive force in order to consider the stability of the ground foundation of the berth.

  • To find the structural characteristics of non-slip device in connecting method B between steel pipe pile and concrete footing, compression and uplift test was performed for full sized specimens not having non-slip device, those having non-slip device with two curved steel plate bars welded inside the steel pipe pile(standard method), and those having non-slip device with serveral curved steel plate bars bolted inside the steel pipe pile(new method). As a result, specimens not having non-slip device had chemical debonding failure at 15.6tonf of peak uplift load and 27.57tonf of peak compression load. And the standard method and the new method showed about 8.9 times of peak uplift load and 6.2 times of peak compression load higher than specimens not having non-slip device. The load transfers of lower non-slip devices of the standard method and the new method were similar in behavior, while the higher non-slip device of the new method showed higher ratio of load transfer than that of the standard method. And these two methods had nearly the same composite action and structural capacity caused by non-slip devices.

  • In the design of foundations for the super-structures such as transmission towers and oil-platforms, the foundations must be considered as a medium to resist cyclic tensile forces. In this study, the uplift capacity of the drilled shaft used as the medium resisting to this pattern of forces is investigated by performing cyclic uplift test of a small model-drilled shaft constructed in compacted granite soil in a steel chamber. In this test, the behavioral difference between a pile loaded on the top of the pile and a pile loaded at the bottom of the pile was investigated intensively. The load transfer curves obtained from the test were investigated by changing the confining pressure in the chamber. The load tests also included creep test and cyclic test. It is found from the tests that uplift capacity of the shaft loaded at the bottom is greater than that of the shaft loaded on the top of the pile. It is found also from the creep test that the pile loaded at the bottom was more stable than the shaft loaded on the top. If a pile loaded at the bottom is pre-tensioned, the pile will be most effective to the creep displacement. It is found also from the cyclic tests that apparent secant modulus obtained in a cycle of the load increases with the number of cycles.

  • In order to investigate the influence of slanting angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their bearing capacities, model tests of compressive and uplift loads on RRP with different slanting angles, which were installed in sandy soils with a relative density of 47%, were carried out. Each pile which is made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 300mm in length, is coated with sand to be 6.5mm in diameter. One set of RRP consists of 8 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 4 piles. Slanting angles of RRP for load tests are 0$^{\circ}$, 5$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, and 25$^{\circ}$. In addition, compressive load tests on circular footing whose diameter is the same as the outer circle of RRP were carried out. Test results show that maximum load bearing capacities of RRP by regression analysis are obtained at about 12$^{\circ}$ and 13$^{\circ}$ of slanting angles for compressive and uplift load tests, respectively. Maximum compressive bearing capacity is estimated to be 13oA bigger than that of the vertical RRP and 95% bigger than that of surface footing. Maximum uplift capacity is estimated to be 21% bigger than that of the vertical RRP. And it can be appreciated that increasing the slanting angle makes the load -Settlement behavior more ductile.
