  • This study evaluates the effect of grooves on the stem part of a plunger on the lubrication characteristics of a fuel injection pump (FIP) by using hydrodynamic lubrication analysis. The current study uses the two-dimensional Reynolds equation to evaluate the changes in lubrication characteristics with variations in clearance, viscosity, and grooves for a laminar, incompressible, and unsteady state flow. This study investigates the lubrication characteristics by comparing the dimensionless minimum film thickness or the film parameter, which is the ratio of the minimum film thickness to surface roughness. The analysis method for the groove section differs depending on the depth of the groove. For instance, in the case of a shallow groove, the film thickness equation considers the depth of the groove, while in the case of a deep grove, it considers the flow continuity. The lubrication characteristics of the FIP are more sensitive to changes in the groove width than to changes in other design variables. Moreover, the application of a groove is more effective under low viscosity conditions. The smaller the distance from the edge of the stem part to the first groove in the case of shallow grooves, the better are the lubrication characteristics of the FIP. In contrast, in the case of deep grooves, the lubrication characteristics of the FIP improve as the distance increases. The application of shallow grooves is more effective for improving the lubrication characteristics than the application of deep grooves.

Large eddy simulation of flow around a stay cable with an artificial upper rivulet

  • The appearance of a rivulet at the upper surface of a stay cable is responsible for rain-wind-induced vibration (RWIV) of cables of cable-stayed bridges. However, the formation mechanism of the upper rivulet and its aerodynamic effects on the stay cable has not been fully understood. Large eddy simulation (LES) method is used to investigate flow around and aerodynamics of a circular cylinder with an upper rivulet at a Reynolds number of 140,000. Results show that the mean lift coefficients of the circular cylinder experience three distinct stages, zero-lift stage, positive-lift stage and negative-lift stage as the rivulet located at various positions. Both pressure-induced and friction-induced aerodynamic forces on the upper rivulet are helpful for its appearance on the upside of the stay cable. The friction-induced aerodynamic forces, which have not been considered in the previous theoretical models, may not be neglected in modeling the RWIV. In positive-lift stage, the shear layer separated from the upper rivulet can reattach on the surface of the cylinder and form separation bubbles, which result in a high non-zero mean lift of the cylinder and potentially induces the occurrence of RWIV. The separation bubbles are intrinsically unsteady flow phenomena. A serial of small eddies first appears in the laminar shear layer separated from the upper rivulet, which then coalesces and reattaches on the side surface of the cylinder and eventually sheds into the wake.

  • 최근들어 장대터널이 증가하여 환기시스템의 환기기 용량이 증대하게 되면서 환기방식이 다양화 되어 환기기 운전동력등 터널준공 후 유지관리의 중요성이 부각되게 되었다. 따라서 환기기 운전단계나 환기기 운전모드에 대한 연구의 필요성이 증대하여 본 연구에서는 기 개발된 일교통량의 변화 및 환기기 가동상태에 따라 비정상상태로 터널 환기를 해석할 수 있는 동적 시뮬레이션 프로그램에 의해서 집진기 방식과 수직갱방식에 대한 운전동력을 평가하여 최적운전 모드를 제안하였다.

  • 파랑에 의한 선박의 횡동요를 방지하는 감요장치는 크게 수동식과 능동식 으로 분류할 수 있으며 수동형 감요수조는 선박에서 가장 널리 사용되고 있다. 이 연구에서는 감요장치의 하부덕트유동에 관한 기초연구로서 덕트의 제어 댐퍼와 유입부의 유통에 대해 입자영상 유속측정장치를 이용하여 속도벡터분포에 관한 정량적인 데이터를 확보하였다. 그 결과 실험관 벽면에서 측정 된 압력의 분포는 디스크가 전개 상태인 0 도에서 45도까지는 입구 압력은 일정한 상태로 거의 변화하지 않았으나 약 60도 이상에서부터 압력 상승과 점차 급격한 변동현상이 나타났다.

Influence of viscous effects on numerical prediction of motions of SWATH vessels in waves

  • The accurate prediction of motion in waves of a marine vehicle is essential to assess the maximum sea state vs. operational requirements. This is particularly true for small crafts, such as Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASV). Two different numerical methods to predict motions of a SWATH-ASV are considered: an inviscid strip theory initially developed at MIT for catamarans and then adapted for SWATHs and new a hybrid strip theory, based on the numerical solution of the radiation forces by an unsteady viscous, non-linear free surface flow solver. Motion predictions obtained by the viscous flow method are critically discussed against those obtained by potential flow strip theory. Effects of viscosity are analyzed by comparison of sectional added mass and damping calculated at different frequencies and for different sections, RAOs and motions response in irregular waves at zero speed. Some relevant conclusions can be drawn from this study: influence of viscosity is definitely non negligible for SWATH vessels like the one presented: amplitude of the pitch and heave motions predicted at the resonance frequency differ of 20% respectively and 50%; in this respect, the hybrid method with fully non-linear, viscous free surface calculation of the radiation forces turns out to be a very valuable tool to improve the accuracy of traditional strip theories, without the burden of long computational times requested by fully viscous time domain three dimensional simulations.

진공튜브 내 초고속열차의 공기저항 파라메타 연구 - 1 (Parametric Study on the Aerodynamic Drag of Ultra High-speed Train in Evacuated Tube - Part 1)

  • 본 연구에서는 튜브-열차 시스템의 기본적인 유동장의 특성을 파악하고, 튜브열차의 공기저항을 계산할 수 있는 보다 효율적인 수치 해법을 제시하고 계산 결과에 대한 타당성을 논하였다. 최소한의 계산 영역 내에선 정상상태의 해를 찾기 위하여 비정상 해석의 결과를 기준으로 하여 경계조건의 부여 방법을 변화시킨 정상 해석의 결과를 비교한 결과, 열차속도가 300 km/h일 경우에는 공기저항의 값이 정상해석 결과와 비정상해석 결과가 잘 일치하였으며, 동일 속도 대역에서의 고속열차 현장시험 결과와 비교한 결과 열차/터널 단면적비에 따라 공기저항의 비가 동일한 추세를 나타나는 것으로 나타났다.

Analysis of added resistance and seakeeping responses in head sea conditions for low-speed full ships using URANS approach

  • The KVLCC2 and its modified hull form were investigated in regular head waves using Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) methods. The modified KVLCC2 (named KWP-bow KVLCC2) is designed for reducing wave reflection from the bow. Firstly, the original KVLCC2 is studied for verification of the present code and methodology and the computed time history of total resistance and 2DOF motions (heave and pitch) for the selected two wave length conditions are directly compared with the results obtained from KRISO towing tank experiment under the identical condition. The predicted added resistance, heave and pitch motion RAOs show relatively good agreement with the experimental results. Secondly, the comparison of performance in waves between KVLCC2 and KWP-bow KVLCC2 is carried out. We confirmed that newly designed hull form shows better performances in all the range of wave length conditions through both the computation and the experiment. The present URANS method can capture the difference of performance in waves of the two hull forms without any special treatment for short wave length conditions. It can be identified that KWP-bow KVLCC2 gives about 8% of energy saving in sea state 5 condition.

가변안내깃 설치각이 다단 축류압축기 성능에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Variable Guide Vane Setting Angle on the Performance of Multi-Stage Axial Compressor)

  • 일반적으로 다단 축류압축기는 부분 부하 조건에서 충분한 운전영역을 확보하기 위해 가변안내깃을 이용한다. 본 연구에서의 해석대상인 다단 축류압축기는 입구에서의 안내깃과 함께 1단과 2단 정익을 가변안내깃으로 하여 운전영역을 확보한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 정격회전수의 70%와 90% 회전수 조건에서의 가변안내깃의 설치각이 다단 축류압축기의 성능에 미치는 영향에 대해 조사하였다. 다단 축류압축기의 성능은 3차원 정상상태 및 비정상상태 수치해석을 이용하여 확보하였다. 각 해석기법을 통해 확보한 결과를 비교하였으며 내부유동장의 특성을 파악하였다.

지하저장공동 주변 불연속 암반에서의 가스-물 천이유동해석을 위한 개별균열 유동모델의 개발 및 응용 (Development and Its Application of a Discrete Fracture Flow Model for the Analysis of Gas-Water Transient Flow in Fractured Rock Masses Around Storage Cavern)

  • The fluid generally flows through fractures in crystalline rocks where most of underground storage facilities are constructed because of their low hydraulic conductivities. The fractured rock is better to be conceptualized with a discrete fracture concept, rather continuum approach. In the aspect of fluid flow in underground, the simultaneous flow of groundwater and gas should be considered in the cases of generation and leakage of gas in nuclear waste disposal facilities, air sparging process and soil vapor extraction for eliminating contaminants in soil or rock pore, and pneumatic fracturing for the improvement of permeability of rock mass. For the purpose of appropriate analysis of groundwater-gas flow, this study presents an unsteady-state multi-phase FEM fracture network simulator. Numerical simulation has been also conducted to investigate the hydraulic head distribution and air tightness around Ulsan LPG storage cavern. The recorded hydraulic head at the observation well Y was -5 to -10 m. From the results obtained by the developed model, it shows that the discrete fracture model yielded hydraulic head of -10 m, whereas great discrepancy with the field data was observed in the case of equivalent continuum modeling. The air tightness of individual fractures around cavern was examined according to two different operating pressures and as a result, only several numbers of fractures neighboring the cavern did not satisfy the criteria of air tightness at 882 kPa of cavern pressure. In the meantime, when operating pressure is 710.5 kPa, the most areas did not satisfy air tightness criteria. Finally, in the case of gas leaking from cavern to the surrounding rocks, the resulted hydraulic head and flowing pattern was changed and, therefore, gas was leaked out from the cavern ceiling and groundwater was flowed into the cavern through the walls.

디스크 회전각에 따른 버터플라이 밸브 하류에서의 유동특성 (Flow Characteristics in the Downstream Region of a Butterfly Valve with Various Disk Opening Angle)

  • 버터플라이 밸브는 선박에서 냉각수와 유류 계통 등에 범용으로 널리 사용되고 있다. 이 연구에서는 유량조정에 따른 배관계통의 버터플라이밸브 후류 유동특성을 규명하기 위하여 입자영상 유속측정장치를 이용하여 밸브개도에 따른 유선과 속도벡터 분포에 관한 정량적인 데이터를 확보하였다. 또한 밸브 주위 유동장의 압력성분을 고찰하기 위하여 개폐각도를 6가지 경우로 변화시켜 정압을 측정하였다. 그 결과 실험관 벽면에서 측정된 압력의 분포는 디스크가 전개 상태인 $0^{\circ}$에서 $45^{\circ}$까지는 입구 압력은 일정한 상태로 거의 변화하지 않았으나 약 $60^{\circ}$ 이상에서부터 압력 상승과 점차 급격한 변동현상이 나타났다. 특히, $75^{\circ}$ 부근에서는 상류에서 급격한 압력 상승 경향을 보인 반면 하류 측은 압력변동이 적게 나타났다.
