  • As the partial admission turbine has a intrinsically unsteady and three dimensional flow region, numerical calculation time of these study has been too long time. The numerical analysis for gas temperature of turbine blade surface has been performed to investigate development of temperature with various pyro start pressure. Computations have been carried out several turbine rotational speeds in the range from 0 to 16000 rpm and inlet conditions with 1423K, 7.2MPa. As a result, the more rotational speed and pyro starter pressure of turbine increased, the more turbine blade's temperature decreased. It is also found that flow field of turbine blade inlet area at pyro starter pressure of 5.75MPa and rotational speed of 12100 rpm formed surface temperature uniformly.

  • A quasi one-dimensional multi-phase reaction flow analysis code is developed for the performance analysis of liquid pintle thrusters. Unsteady flow field, droplet evaporation, finite reaction and film cooling models are composed as the major models of the performance analysis. The droplet vaporization takes account of Abramzon's vaporization model, and the combustion employs a flamelet model based on detail chemical reactions. Shine's model is applied for the film cooling calculation. To verify each model, the Sod shock tube, single droplet vaporization, kerosene droplets combustion, and film length are evaluated.

  • The purity of hydrogen finally purified in the hydrogen purification process system is greatly influenced by the uniformity of the purification temperature of the dry tower. A in-house code that can be easily used by field designers has been developed to predict the capacity of the appropriate heat source and the time to reach the temperature of the dry tower. A code was developed to predict unsteady heat transfer using Visual Basic for Applications. To verify the developed code, a grid independence test was performed, and finally, calculations were performed for two cases. In the first case, the time for the temperature of the heater jacket to reach 360℃ was about 1,400 seconds when the supply heat source was 1,000 W. And in the second case, the time for the temperature of the heater jacket to reach 360℃ was about 710 seconds when the supply heat source was 2,000 W. It was confirmed that the developed code well describes the actual test data of the regeneration process of adsorption and desorption, and it is judged that the code developed in the design process of various capacity systems will be effectively applied to the heat capacity calculation in the future.

  • This study calculated the overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of greenhouse covering materials with thermal screens using a simulation model and then estimated the validity of the calculated results by comparison with measured values. The U-value decreased gradually as the thickness of the air space between the double glazing increased, and then remained essentially constant at thicknesses exceeding 25 mm. The U-value also increased with the difference in temperature between the inside and outside of the hot box. The vigorous convective heat transfer between two plastic films caused unsteady heat flow and then created a nonlinear temperature distribution in the air space. The distance did not affect the U-value at distances of 50~200 mm between the plastic covering and thermal curtain. The numerical calculation results, with and without sky radiation, were in accord with the experimental results for a $30^{\circ}C$ temperature difference between the inside and outside of the hot box. In conclusion, a reliable U-value can be calculated for a temperature difference of $30^{\circ}C$ or more between the inside and outside of the hot box.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of Pumping-and-Treatment system (PTS) for remediation of the saturated zones contaminated with NAPLs. A simulation is carried out for the removal of DNAPLs (denser-than-water non-aqueous phase liquids) and LNAPLS (lighter-than-water non-aqueous phase liquids) distributing at and below the water table. In the study, LNAPL and DNAPL are assumed to be n-hexane and 1,1-dichloroacetone, respectively. The model system studied consists of four heterogeneous soil layers with different permeabilities. Groundwater flows through the bottom layer and a pumping well is located under the initial water table. The time-driven deformation of the water table and removal efficiency of contaminants are estimated after vacuum application to the inlet of the well. In the calculation, FVM (Finite Volumetric Method) with SIMPLEC algorithm is applied. Results show that removal efficiencies of both DNAPL and LNAPL are negligible for the first 5 days after the PTS operation. However, when the cone-shape water table is formed around the inlet of the pumping well, the rapid removal rate is obtained since NAPLs migrate rapidly through the curvature of the water table. The removal efficiency of DNAPL is estimated to be higher than that of LNAPL due to the gravity. The results also show that the fluctuation or cone-shaped depression of the water table enhances the removal efficiency of NAPLs in saturated zones. The simulation results could provide a basis of the PTS design for the removal of NAPLs in saturated zones.

  • The transient mass transfer in a single droplet system consisting of 1-octanol (continuous phase)/aqueous succinic acid solution (dispersed phase) was investigated in the presence of chemical reaction, which is acid/anion exchange reaction of succinic acid and tri-n-octylamine (TOA). This succinic acid extraction by TOA can be considered to occur at the interface between organic and aqueous phase, that is, heterogeneous reaction system. The basic properties of the system such as viscosity, density, distribution coefficient, terminal velocity of droplet, and diffusion coefficient were measured experimentally or calculated theoretically, and used for theoretical calculation of characteristic parameters of mass transfer later. The effects of succinic acid concentration on the terminal velocity was negligible in the existence of TOA, although the terminal velocity increases with succinic acid concentration in the absence of TOA. On the contrary, the terminal velocity decreases with TOA concentration. While droplets falls through organic phase, the trajectory of droplets is observed to oscillate around its vertical path. A mass trnasfer cell was prepared to monitor the mass transfer behavior in a single droplet and used to measure the mean concentration of succinic acid inside droplet. The results are expressed with dimensionless parameters. Under 50 g/L succinic acid condition, the system with 0.1 mol/kg TOA showed that the molar flux decreases in proportion to the decrease of concentration gradient, while in the case of 0.5 mol/kg TOA Sh increases rapidly with time indicating the molar flux of succinic acid decreases relatively slowly compared to the decrease in concentration gradient.

  • As the recent development of computing architecture and application software technology, real world simulation, which is the ultimate destination of computer simulation, is emerging as a practical issue in several research sectors. In this paper, metal plate motion in a square shock tube for small time interval was calculated using a supercomputing-based fluid-structure-combustion multi-physics simulation tool called Illinois Rocstar, developed in a US national R amp; D program at the University of Illinois. Afterwards, the simulation results were compared with those from experiments. The coupled solvers for unsteady compressible fluid dynamics and for structural analysis were based on the finite volume structured grid system and the large deformation linear elastic model, respectively. In addition, a strong correlation between calculation and experiment was shown, probably because of the predictor-corrector time-integration scheme framework. In the future, additional validation studies and code improvements for higher accuracy will be conducted to obtain a reliable open-source software research tool.

  • In this Paper, the Performance of the convolution method has been investigated as an effort to develop a simple system of predicting wind-driven surface current on a real time basis. In this approach wind stress is assumed to be spatially uniform and the effect of atmospheric pressure is neglected. The discrete convolution weights are determined in advance at each point using a linear three-dimensional Galerkin model with linear shape functions(Galerkin-FEM model). Four directions of wind stress(e.g. NE, SW, NW, SE) with unit magnitude are imposed in the model calculation for the construction of data base for convolution weights. Given the time history of wind stress, it is then possible to predict with-driven currents promptly using the convolution product of finite length. An unsteady wind stress of arbitrary form can be approximated by a series of wind pulses with magnitude of 6 hour averaged value. A total of 12 pulses are involved in the convolution product To examine the accuracy of the convolution method a series of numerical experiments has been carried out in the idealized basin representing the scale of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The wind stress imposed varies sinusoidally in time. It was found that the predicted surface currents and elevation fields were in good agreement with the results computed by the direct integration of the Galerkin model. A model with grid 1/8$^{\circ}$ in latitude, l/6$^{\circ}$ in longitude was established which covers the entire region of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The numerical prediction in terms of the convolution product has been carried out with particular attention on the formation of upwind flow in the middle of the Yellow Sea by northerly wind.

  • The most important parameters of the Muskingum method, widely used in hydrologic river routing, are the storage coefficient and the weighting factor. The Muskingum method does not consider the lateral inflow from the upstream to the downstream, but the lateral inflow actually occurs due to the rainfall on the watershed. As a result, it is very difficult to estimate the storage coefficient and the weighting factor by using the actual data of upstream and downstream. In this study, the flow without the lateral inflow was calculated from the river flow through the hydraulic flood routing by using the HEC-RAS one-dimensional unsteady flow model, and the method of the storage coefficient and the weighting factor calculation is presented. Considering that the storage coefficient relates to the travel time, the empirical travel time formulas used in the establishment of the domestic river basin plan were applied as the storage coefficient, and the simulation results were compared and analyzed. Finally, we have developed a formula for calculating the travel time considering the flow rate, and proposed a method to perform flood routing by updating the travel time according to the inflow change. The rise and fall process of the flow rate, the peak flow rate, and the peak time are well simulated when the travel time in consideration of the flow rate is applied as the storage coefficient.
