The design point of the cross-flow fan is generally based on the region within low static pressure and high flow rate. It relatively makes high dynamic pressure at low speed because a working fluid passes through an impeller blade twice. However, it has low static pressure efficiency between $30\%$ and $40\%$ because of relative high impact loss. The purpose of this study is to research the reciprocal relation among each parameter. Experiments and numerical analyses are conducted on effects of a stabilizer and a rearguider on performance analysis of a cross-flow fan. Two-dimensional, unsteady governing equations are solved using FVM, PISO algorithm, sliding grid system and standard $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model. Experiments are also carried out to estimate the performance of the modeled cross-flow fan. It is clarified that the rearguider of Archimedes type has excellent results for the most part.

The phenomenon of cavitation is an unsteady flow, which is nearly inevitable in pump. It would degrade the pump performance, produce vibration and noise and even damage the pump. Hence, to improve accuracy of the numerical prediction of the pump cavitation performance is much desirable. In the present work, a homogenous model, the Zwart-Gerber-Belamri cavitation model, is considered to investigate the influence of the empirical coefficients on predicting the pump cavitation performance, concerning a centrifugal pump. Three coefficients are analyzed, namely the nucleation site radius, evaporation and condensation coefficients. Also, the experiments are carried out to validate the numerical simulations. The results indicate that, to get a precise prediction, the approaches of declining the initial bubble radius, the condensation coefficient or increasing the evaporation coefficient are all feasible, especially for declining the condensation coefficient, which is the most effective way.
Anisotropic distribution of the turbulent kinetic energy and the near-field excitations are the main causes of the steady state Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) which could lead to fretting wear damage in vertically arranged supported slender rods. In this article, a combined Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Structural Mechanic (CSM) approach named two-way Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is used to investigate the modal characteristics of a typical rod's vibration. Performance of an Unsteady Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes (URANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence models on asymmetric fluctuations of the flow field are investigated. Using the LES turbulence model, any large deformation damps into a weak oscillation which remains in the system. However, it is challenging to use LES in two-way FSI problems from fluid domain discretization point of view which is investigated in this article as the innovation. It is concluded that the near-wall meshes whiten the viscous sub-layer is of great importance to estimate the Root Mean Square (RMS) of FIV amplitude correctly as a significant fretting wear parameter otherwise it merely computes the frequency of FIV.

In hydraulic control system turbine and gear motor type flowmeters are widely used to measure the flow rate under steady flow conditions. With the recent growth of interest in the measurement of instantaneous values of unsteady flow rate the test of the transient response of these flowmeters are in some significance. however an unsteady flow rate mea-surment and its calibration method with a fast response and a high accuracy have not beendeveloped. In this research particularly the dynamic characteristics of turbine and gear motor type flowmeters are investigated experimentally and simple mathematical models are proposed. The measured flow rate waveforms are compared with those by remote instan-taneous flow rate measurement method(RIFM) which has been developed by author and used for calibration As the result of frequency response test gain and phase between the measured flow rate waveforms by turbine type flowmeter and those estimated by RIFM are in good agreement up to 70Hz For the gear motor type flowmeter th simulated results by a math-ematical model proposed here agree well with the experiment nearly up to 100Hz. Also it if sound that the pressure drop across the flowmeter is increased in proportion to the frequency of the flow rate variation in a high frequency region of more than 100Hz. It can be explained that the dealy of gear motor type flowmeter in high frequency regionis mainly attributed to a first order delay consisting of the inertia of gears and internal leakage of the gear motor.
Centrifugal fans are widely used and the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the centrifugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the flow discharged from the impeller and the cutoff in the casing. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the noise due to the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal fan and to calculate the effects of rotating velocity, flow rate, cut-off distance and the number of blades and its effects on the noise of the fan. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method (DVM) is used to model the centrifugal fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated with the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. The cut-off distance is the most important factor effecting the noise generation. Acoustic pressure is proportional to 2.8, which shows the same scaling index as the experimental result. In this paper, the cut-off distance is found to be the dominant parameter offecting the acoustic pressure.

In this study, the piping system conveying unsteady flow is considered. The effects of coupling between the pipe motion and the velocity and pressure of fluid are included for the dynamic stability and response analysis of the piping system. The dynamic equations for a piping system are derived by Newtonian dynamics. For the momentum and continuity equations, the concept of moving control volume is applied. Thus, the governing equations derived herein are valid for the applications to the vibration problems occurred when a piping system starts up or shuts down and also when the valves and pumps operate. For a simply supported straight pipe, the stability analysis is conducted for various nondimensional parameters. The dynamic responses, in both stable and unstable region of stability chart, are numerically tested by the use of central difference method.
The aim of the present study is to investigate the flow interference between two adjacent undulating fish-like body, and its effect on the undulating propulsion. For this purpose, unsteady two dimensional incompressible flow calculations were conducted using an unstructured mesh flow solver, coupled with an overset mesh technique. To deal with mesh deformation due to fish locomotion, spring analogy is utilized. The fish body used in the simulation is constructed from the NACA0012 airfoil. The study indicates that the propulsion of undulating fish is proportional to frequency and wavelength of the midline oscillation when there is no adjacent fish. It also reveals that average thrust was increased when the vortex shedding from the tail was conserved well and pressure difference between upper and lower sides of the fish was magnified due to flow interference. From this study, which relative position and phase difference of locomotion between two fishes can generate maximum thrust was known among six different cases.
As part of a Department of Defense Grand Challenge Project, advanced high performance computing (HPC) time-accurate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques have been developed and applied to a new area of aerodynamic research on microjets for control of small and medium caliber projectiles. This paper describes a computational study undertaken to determine the aerodynamic effect of flow control in the afterbody regions of spin-stabilyzed projectiles at subsonic and low transonic speeds using an advanced scalable unstructured flow solver in various parallel computers such as the IBM SP4 and Linux Cluster. High efficiency is achieved for both steady and time-accurate unsteady flow field simulations using advanced scalable Navier-Stokes computational techniques. Results relating to the code's portability and its performance on the Linux clusters are also addressed. Numerical simulations with the unsteady microjets show the jets to substantially alter the flow field both near the jet and the base region of the projectile that in turn affects the forces and moments even at zero degree angle of attack. The results have shown the potential of HPC CFD simulations on parallel machines to provide to provide insight into the jet interaction flow fields leading to improve designs.

AILU type preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation of the interaction of rigid cylinder with incompressible fluid flow have been devised and tested by solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a rigid cylinder with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 mixed finite element formulation coupled with combined formulation. Four different preconditioners were devised for the two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation extending the idea of Nam et al., which was proposed for the preconditioning of a P2P1 mixed finite element formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It was found that PC-III or PC-IV among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence rate for some bench-mark problems.

In this study, simulation of weak shock waves are peformed by a two-dimensional thermal fluid or compressible fluid model of the lattice Boltzmann method. The shock wave represents an abrupt change in fluids properties, in which finite variations in pressure, internal energies, and density occur over the shock thickness. The characteristics of the proposed model with a simple distribution function is verified by calculation of the sound speeds, and the shock tube problem. The reflection of a weak shock wave by wedge propagating in a channel is performed. The results agree well with those by finite difference method or by experiment. In the simulation of unsteady shock wave diffraction around a sharp corner, we show a flow field of vortical structure near the comer.
