  • This study has analyzed the factors that influence the unification perception of adolescents. To achieve this, 399 adolescents who live in Gyeonggi, Chungnam and Chungbuk area were selected as study subjects. For the data analysis, PASW Statistics 18.0 was used. The main results of this study are as follows: First, the level of unification perception of general and multi-cultural family adolescents were 3.22 and 2.96 respectively showing that general adolescents were significantly higher. Second, the factors that influence the unification perception were shown to be same for each group, but significantly different for their influence of each group. The factors that influence the unification perception of general adolescents were shown in the order of national identity, unification education, exclusion of school life. The factors that influence the unification perception of adolescents in multi-cultural family were shown in the order of exclusion of family relationship, national identity, exclusion of school life. Third, in the relationship between social exclusion and unification perception, buffering effects of national identity were identified to be different in each group. Based on these results, several ways were suggested to improve the unification perception of adolescents.

  • The recent trend of declining consciousness regarding the necessity of unification among South Korean citizens is evident. Does a cohort effect exist in this downward trend in the perception of the necessity of unification? The purpose of this study is to analyze whether birth cohorts statistically significantly influence the consciousness of the necessity of unification. To this end, the hierarchical age-period-cohort (HAPC) model was employed as the analytical model, and data from the Unification Consciousness Survey conducted by Seoul National University's Institute for Peace and Unification Studies from 2007 to 2021 was used. The analysis results showed evidence that the progress of economic inequality at the birth cohort level affected the decline in the perception of the necessity of unification. The 1980s birth cohort, which faced socioeconomic difficulties during their social advancement due to income and wealth polarization, is observed to have a distinctly negative perception of unification requiring massive financial resources, compared to the 1960s and 1970s birth cohorts.

  • After the collapse of the Cold War, there was a shift in perception at two points in discussions on Korean unification. The real core issue of unification is first, that it is a shift in perception that the real problem of unification is not the integration of systems, but the integration of people. Second, there is a shift in perception that there are many Koreans in the four major powers related to the Korean division and their distribution is associated with the tragic history of the Korean Peninsula. The historical trauma of Korean people resulted from the oppression of the collective libido of Koreans, stemming from the pain of modern history of the Korean Peninsula. In addition, the trauma of colonization, diaspora, and division all share the structure of suppression as the '$nation{\neq}states$'. Thus, unification aims to overcome the notion that '$nation{\neq}state$' can not be separated from the process of healing the historical trauma of Koreans. First of all, this article argues that in order to achieve unification on the Korean peninsula, it requires the process of healing the traumas of colonization, diaspora, and division. Second, this paper claims that Korean unification is not only a matter of two countries, but also of making peace by healing historical trauma in Northeast Asia. Third, this paper argues that the healing of Korean's historical trauma should begin with 'sympathy' for pain and proceed to the production of a 'national commonality' through 'communication of difference', which will create a unified peninsula.

This research used Q-methodology for in-depth evaluation of the experts' perception towards propaganda broadcasts. Total sixteen experts who work at the propaganda broadcasting company domestically or internationally as well as conduct related researches were selected as P-samples. This research listed sixty Q statements covering issues such as Perception of Unification, General Propaganda Broadcasts, Private Propaganda Broadcasts, Communication between North and South Korea. According to traditional way of Q-analysis, it drew two types of perception; Type 1: North Korean Liberal Broadcasts, Type2: Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Broadcasts. For in-depth analysis, positive and negative statements were analyzed based on its tendency. As a result, positive statements tend to follow 'the Role of Unification Broadcasts' and negative statements followed 'the regulation of Private Broadcasts' When further researches were conducted on positive statements based on its axis of tendencies, Type 1 and Type 2 were categorized as follows; the Role of Unification Broadcasts- North Korean Liberal Broadcasts and Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Broadcasts. On the other hand, when negative statements were analyzed based on its tendencies, the result of Type 1 and Type 2 were as follows; the Improvement of Private Broadcasts- Redeeming the Private Propaganda Broadcasts and Criticizing Private Propaganda Broadcasts. Regardless such differences, experts do agree on the idea which emphasize the role of broadcasts in the process of unification and also they share the same thought on the need to improve the private propaganda broadcasts. This research expected to contribute to society by making differences in analyzing propaganda broadcasting experts' perception in an objective and positive way compare to other existing researches. Therefore, it proposes several suggestions to consider when producing propaganda broadcasts.

  • Architectural theories in western architecture have been considered as a basis for answering the fundamental questions of architectonics: proportion, symmetry, color, harmony and so on. Among those the architectural design theory is significant, since it affects the aesthetic evaluation of human perception. This paper gives an outline in applying the traditional design principles of architecture to contemporary architecture by 'unification through similarity' of architectural components such as form, scale, texture and color. As we see from this research, unification can be achieved in a design by the combination of the four components; that is, to balance between the four above-mentioned components in buildings, through the similarity of one or more of these components.

  • This study aims to investigate the perception of public library users, who are local residences, on the multi-cultural services in public libraries using a series of statistical analyses on a questionnaire survey. The objectives of multi-cultural policies by Korean government are to foster assimilation of the multi-cultural people, social unification of Korean (local) communities, and cultural diversity in the communities. The results from the analyses show that the multi-cultural services in public libraries are understood from the unification and assimilation point of views, and that the perception of the multi-cultural services in public libraries is affected by the libraries' marketing activities, such as advertisements and participation. For the sustainable provision of the services, we suggest that the libraries would better consider 1) multi-oriented services with cultural diversity, assimilation, and social unification, 2) relationship with other multi-cultural agencies in a community, and 3) the perception of local residences on the services in public libraries.

  • There has been a change in the South Korean policy towards the North which in turn changed the news frame of television broadcasters in South Korea. We did an empirical analysis of how this changed news frame influence the audiences' perception of North Korea and Unification. An experimental design was carried out in order to test the response of the audiences to different news frame. The results show that the respondents' perception towards North Korea were changed when exposed to a specific type of new frame. This confirms the existing knowledge on how news frame influence the perception of TV viewers. This research can serve as background information when making decisions to how the South Korean news media should report North Korea and Unification related news stories.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine how multi-cultural acceptability affects the perception of necessity of unification through structural equation model. The multi-cultural acceptability, familiarity with North Korean defectors, and awareness of unification were selected as the latent variables and the full / partial mediator models were built for structural equations. The observed variables for each latent variable were data that were collected through the National Survey on the Integration of North and South Korea conducted by the Korea Institute for National Unification in 2015. As a result, the acceptance of multiculturalism had a significant effect on the intimacy of the defectors, which had a positive effect on the recognition of the need for unification. The intimacy of the defectors was more influential as a parameter for full mediation than for partial mediation. Although the consciousness of unification gets weakened by postwar generations, that the phenomenon that changes into a multicultural society plays a part in recognizing the necessity of unification. In addition, the increase of North Korean defectors may ultimately become a factor in recognizing the need for unification. This study demonstrated that increasing the acceptance of multiculturalism can increase the need for unification, which means that more research fields can be derived.
