  • The purpose of this study is the understanding to changes in the characteristic of soil structure and classification, atterberg limits, undrained shear strength and consolidation of clayey soil dependent on pH of soil pore water. A series of tests including consistency tests, uniaxial compressive tests, vane tests and oedometer tests are performed on. The test results indicated that pH changes in the soil pH resulted in changes in the soil structure and classification, stress-strain behavior. Specially, when pH is conditioned to 7, liquid limit, undrained shear strength and preconsolidation pressure are the largest.

  • The engineering properties of the geomaterial, an essential material in construction engineering, are significantly influenced by consolidation mode, which is called inherent anisotropy. Speically cohesive soils feature the anisotropy mainly due to their flate-like minerals and chemical interactions. In this research, an experimental study was conducted for the investigation of the anisoropy. Three isotropic and four anisotropic consolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests were performed for the cohesive specimens with various stress ratios of consolidation. The effects of the consolidation mode for cohesive soils were presented and investigated in stress-strain behavior, pore water pressure, and undrained shear strength of the test results.

  • Biocementation based on the microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) process is a novel soil improvement method. Biocement can improve significantly the properties of soils by binding soil particles to increase the shear strength or filling in the pores to reduce the permeability of soil. In this paper, results of triaxial consolidated undrained (CU) tests and constant shear drained (CSD) tests on biocemented Ottawa sand are presented. In the CU tests, the biocemented sand had more dilative behaviour by showing a higher stress-strain curves and faster pore pressure reducing trends as compared with their untreated counterparts. In the CSD tests, the stress ratio q/p' at which biocemented sand became unstable was higher than that for untreated sands, implying that the biocementation will improve the stability of sand to water infiltration or liquefaction.

  • This paper describes the general trends of the stress-strain behavior of Korean weathered soil prior to failure and behavior at failure under triaxial loading. The isotropically consolidated samples were tested in a testing device under monotonic undrained loading. Relative density, effective mean pressure and fine content were the factors varied in the experimental investigation. The test results were analyzed and their behaviors were interpreted within the framework of plasticity constitutive model for a weathered Korean silty sand. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed. Validation of the applied model using the laboratory results is also given.

  • In this study, laboratory test, in-situ vane shear test and piezocone penetration test in the study area were conducted to investigate the engineering characteristics of soft soils at Cheongra District, Songdo District in Incheon City, the west coast of Gyeonggi province, and Sihwa District in Ansan city. The correlations among compression index, and in-situ vane shear test, and cone resistance were obtained. The variations of liquid limit, plasticity index, water content and compression index with respect to depth exhibit strong similarity. This means that they have strong correlations, which can be used to evaluate the local characteristics of the study area. Thus, the correlations between compression index and physical properties were analysed to investigate the engineering characteristics of soft soil in the study area. The relationships between the measured piezocone factor by empirical methods, and undrained shear strength obtained by triaxial compression test or in-situ vane shear test were compared. It shows the significant correlation and piezocone factors, $N_{kT}$are suggested for the study area.

  • In this study, model test equipment was developed to evaluate the hydraulic pressure reduction in appling the drainage shield tunnel and the model test for hydraulic pressure difference was performed in case of drainage and undrained conditions. In the result of model test, increase ratio of pore water pressure was decreased in drainage condition and total stress in drainage condition was smaller than that in undrained condition, so the hydraulic pressure was reduced by the groundwater inflow into the model tunnel. In the result of field instrumentation, the hydraulic pressure in the back ground of shield tunnel was small by 11~22% in comparison with the calculated hydraulic pressure ($r_w{\cdot}H$) in same groundwater level. In the result of model test and field instrumentation, it was appeared in drainage and undrained conditions that the difference between the theoretical hydraulic pressure and the real hydraulic pressure. It shows that it is possible to apply the reduced hydraulic pressure in applying the drainage shield tunnel and to reduce the segment section due to hydraulic pressure reduction.

  • In this study, model tests of soft silt soils(ML) and silt soils was polluted with wastewater and waste oil from factories($ML_p$). Distribution of displacement, bearing capacity comparing the test results with existing theoretical expressions and analyzing the test results, the following conclusions were obtained. It was found out that in soft silt soils the relationship of critical surcharge and undrained cohesion is $q_{cr}=4.14C_u$ and polluted silt soils $ML_p$ those are $q_{cr}=1.78C_u$, respectively and the relationship of ultimate capacities $q_{ult}=9.53C_u$ and undrained cohesion in polluted silt soils are $q_{ult}=4.39C_u$. Critical surcharge and ultimate capacity is less in polluted silt soils than in soft silt soils.

  • The flat dilatometer test(DMT) is a useful geotechnical tool for estimating in-situ properties of various types of ground materials and the application of flat DMT is increasing. The existing relationships which are used to estimate the design parameters of soft deposit depend on the regional geotechnical characteristics and then it is necessary to investigate the applicability of the flat dilatometer in Korea. In this paper, the flat DMT has been conducted in soft marine deposits. The results estimated by existing relationships and those obtained from laboratory tests were compared. Based on the results, some factors influencing the relationships were examined and adjustment of empirical expression was performed.
