Systematic measurements in the field are the key component in the design process to ensure that optimal and safe designs result. The instruments installed at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, a underground nuclear waste repository in U.S., for measuring rock deformation was reviewed. Also discussions about installation and measurement for better understanding the complex time-dependent deformational behavior of underground excavation were made.
The study on the flow characteristics and analysis of groundwater in discontinuous rock mass is very important, since the water inflow into the underground opening during excavation induces serious stability and environmental problems. To investigate the flow through single rock joint, the effect of various aperture distribution on the groundwater flow has been analyzed. Observed through the analysis is the "channel flow", the phenomenon that the flow is dominant along the path of large aperture for given joint. The equivalent hydraulic conductivity is estimated and verified through the application of the joint network analysis for 100 joint maps generated statistically. Both the analytic aproach based on isotropic continuum premise and the joint network analysis are tested and compared analyzing the gorundwater inflow for underground openings of different sizes and varying joint density. The joint network analysis is considered better to reflect the geometric properties of joint distribution in analyzing the groundwater flow.ater flow.

As a demand for underground structure is increasing with more parking and retail spaces required. Various construction methods are reviewed and selected for each specific site for economical and fast construction. In this study, factors for selecting construction methods were categorized for substructure construction. Construction processes of substructure are consisted of methods for excavation, earth retaining systems, and placement of slabs. Factors for the selection of substructure construction method are the condition of surrounding, geotechnical, information and constraint by comfortness for others nearby. After survey for the construction data of 5 different sites, analysis about reliable substructure construction selection method was suggested.
Tunnel displacement happens during the process of stress redistribution by tunnelling. Tunnel displacement can be divided into 3 types such as displacements occurring before excavation, non-measured displacements after excavation and measured displacements after excavation. Because measurements of displacements occurring before excavation and non-measured displacement after excavation are difficult and time-consuming in the field, many researchers have studied on total displacement and its characteristics with excavation using numerical analysis. In this study, we used a 3-D back analysis to estimate total displacement by rock mass grades in tunnel constructed in sedimentary rock. We reduced error between measured displacements and calculated displacements from a 3-D numerical analysis, and then estimated suitable rock mass properties by RMR classes. Ultimately, Logistic nonlinear regressions of total displacement with tunnelling were estimated by least square estimation.

The case study on ground subsidence was conducted and the cause of ground subsidence was evaluated, main cause were insufficient site exploration, inaccurate strength parameters, defective temporary wall, insufficient reaction for boiling and heaving, excessive excavation and so on. Risk factors during excavation were identified from the cause of ground subsidence and risk factors were site exploration, selecting excavation method, structure analysis, measurement plan, excavation method construction, underground water level change, natural disaster and construction management. The survey of the experts on risk factors identified was conducted to evaluate the importance of risk factors, and confidence analysis was performed to evaluate the significance level between survey result and survey respondent using Chi-square Test.
Recently, it is a trend of the underground excavation to become larger and deeper for more effective use of available space and with the advent of new excavation technologies. The ground typically has a complex stratigraphy. The excavation can lead to large deformation in the nearby structures and large earth pressure on the wall. This can lead to serious problem in the stability of the wall. For the retaining wall to be safely constructed, it is important that the stratigraphy and engineering properties of the ground be accurately estimated, based on the excavation plan and appropriate excavation method. This study uses the measured field data and numerical results to characterize the characteristics of the lateral deformation of the retaining wall. A touredof six field data were analysed. SUNEX, a numerical program which uses the elasto-plastic model to represent the soil, was used. It was shown that the measured deformations exceeded the proposed values for shallow excavations. Overall, the maximum lateral deformation was within the proposed value and hence, the walls were analyzed as safe.

The existing NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) has induced civil compliants due to blasting vibration and noise. Machanized excavation methods such as TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) are being adopted in the planning and construction of tunneling projects. Shield TBM method is composed of repetition processes of TBM excavation and segment installation, the machine has to be stopped during the later process. Consecutive excavation technology using helical segment is under developing to minimize the stoppage time. The modification of thrust jacks and module are planned to ensure the advance force acting on the inclined surface of helical segment. Also, the integrated system design of hydraulic circuit will be remodeled. This means that the system deactivate the jacks on the installing segment while the others automatically act the thrusting forces on the existing segments. This report briefly introduces the mechanical research part of the current consecutive excavation technological development project of TBM.
Recently, as the utilization of underground space increases, the demand for underground excavation increases. In this study, the concrete mixture with a new material was used to develop and evaluate the stability of the CS-H wall that can greatly minimize the problems of existing wall and minimize the impact of ground depression and surrounding ground that may occur in the future for excavation of over 30 m deep in urban areas. The fiber reinforcement formulation of steel fibers, synthetic fibers, and glass fibers, along with fine aggregate parts of PS-ball and ferronickel, were mixed. The Mixture ratios were determined by conducting slump test compresive strength test, modulus of elastic test, flexural strength test, splitting tensile strength test and conductivity test. As a result of the test, the steel fiber mixture showed very good results compared to other reference values in all items, and it is considered to be the most suitable for the CS-H wall to be developed.
The world's largest nucleon decay experiment facility is constructed at a depth of approximately 1,000 meters, in the Kamio Mine, Japan. The excavated cavern is consisted of a cylinder of 42.4 m high and a semi elliptical dome of 15.2 m high, with a bottom diameter of 40 m. The total excavation volume is approximately $69,000\;m^3$. Because of the character as a large cavern excavation in deep underground, there is many unknown factors in rock mechanics. Based on the results of rock test and numerical analysis, the monitoring of rock mass behavior accompanying progress of construction was performed by various instruments installed in the rock mass surrounding the cavern. The monitoring data was used in the study of measures for cavern stability.

For the construction of NATM tunnel, it is required a design based on the accurate soil condition from soil investigation. However, in practice, it often designs tunnels without fully understanding the condition. Especially, when soft soil comes up, or ground water breaks out suddenly on the construction, it needs to secure the stability of tunnel by appropriate reinforcing construction according to the results of measurements on field superlatively reflecting the faced situation. This report reviews the mostsuitable stability of tunnel in the construction of soft soil of tunnel by numerical analysis using FDM after re-evaluated the soil properties through back analysis using the results of measurements to simulate abruptly occurred deformation. And applying steel pipe grouting row by row on the wall and the low part of tunnel and also applying the construction method of temporary invert after excavation of the upper part of tunnel, the excavation of soft soil tunnel secured the structural stability of tunnel has been completed.
