In marine clay deposits, naturally formed or artificially reclaimed, the evaluation and monitoring of the consolidation process has been a critical issue in civil engineering practices due to the time frame required for completing the consolidation process, which range from several days to several years. While complementing the conventional iconographic method suggested by Casagrande and recently developed in-situ techniques that measure the shear wave, this study suggests an alternative experimental procedure that can be used to evaluate the consolidation state of marine clay deposits using the shear wave velocity. A laboratory consolidation testing apparatus was implemented with bimorph-type piezoelectric bender elements to determine the effective stress-shear wave velocity (${\sigma}^{\prime}-V_s$) relationship with the marine clays of interest. The in-situ consolidation state was then evaluated by comparing the in-situ shear wave velocity data with the effective stress-shear wave velocity relationships obtained from laboratory experiments. The suggested methodology was applied and verified at three different sites in South Korea, i.e., a foreshore site in Incheon, a submarine deposit in Busan, and an estuary delta deposit in Busan. It is found that the shear wave-based experimental procedure presented in this paper can be effectively and reliably used to evaluate the consolidation state of marine clay deposits.
In this study, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed according to finite strain consolidation theory using a nonlinear constitutive relationship equation. Results of parametric sensitivity analysis shows that the final settlement, initial height, and initial void ratio exerted the greatest effect, and the coefficients of the void ratio-effective-stress. Proposed design charts were analyzed for three regions using a representative constitutive relationship equation that enables major dredged-reclaimed construction sites in Korea. The regional design charts can be calculated accurately for the final settlement because it is applied directly to the numerical analysis results, except for reading errors. A general design chart applicable to all marine clays is proposed through correlation analysis of the main parameters. A final self-weight consolidation settlement with various initial void ratios and initial height conditions should be estimated easily using the general design chart and constitutive relationship. The estimated final settlement using the general design chart is similar to the results of numerical analysis obtained using finite strain consolidation theory. Under an overburden pressure condition, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed for three regions in Korea.

When the repeated loading, such as vehicel etc, acts on soft ground, consolidation behaviors due to repeated loading wil show different from standard one. A series of tests was performed to investigate the characteristics of consolidation of lowly organic soil subjected to repeated loadings. Lowly organic soil with Lig. 23.5% was sampeld in Chonbuk Province and tested using a partially and a fully repeated loadings. From test results it was found that void ration, volume change, consolidation coefficient, permeability and secondary consolidation coefficient were greatly affected according to the repetition number and the load weight. The secondary consolidation coefficient was decreased with increase of the repetition number. The results obtained from this research can be used as basic for the improvement of soft ground.
In this thesis, from the results of settlement measurement performed at the site where embankment earthwork was carried out on the ground consisting of highly plastic and silty soft soils interlayered with organic deposits, various methods of predicting the embankment settlement such as Hoshino's method, Asaoka's method, hyperbolic method, ${\sqrt{s}}$ method and Monden's method were used to investigate their applicability and the inverse method of finding the soil parameter related to consolidation was used to predict the consolidation behavior in the future. It was confirmed that reliable prediction of consolidation behavior under various conditions could be done to estimate soil parameter related to consolidation such as the consolidation index and consolidation coefficient by the inverse method of comparing the measured settlement with the predicted value by the settlement prediction methods.

Previous settlement prediction method based on settlement monitoring such as hyperbolic, monden method were developed under instantaneous loading condition and have restriction to be applied to soft ground under ramp loading condition. In this study, settlement prediction method under ramp loading was developed. New settlement prediction method under ramp loading considers influence factors of consolidation settlement and increase accuracy of settlement prediction using field monitoring data after ramp loading. Large consolidation tests for ideally controlled one dimensional consolidation under ramp loading condition were performed and the settlement behavior was predicted based on the monitoring data. As a result, new prediction method is expected to have great applicability and practicability for the prediction of settlement behavior.

In this study, the large scaled model test improved by sand drain was carried out to clarify the internal behavior of the three-dimensional consolidation under different secondary consolidation periods. From the results of model test, the void ratio in the undrained side was lager than in the drained side. In addition, the unconfined compressive strength in the long-term consolidated specimen was larger than that in the short-term consolidated one. It was also found that the unconfined compressive strength was larger in the drained side than in the undrained side. These reasons are considered to be due to the large effective stress by quick pore water pressure dissipation by the short drainage distance in the drained side. Furthermore, in order to investigate the three-dimensional consolidation behavior of clay ground improved by the vertical drain method, the numerical analysis obtained from the three-dimensional elasto-viscous consolidation theory proposed by author (2006) were compared with the test results. It was found that during the three-dimensional consolidation process not only vertical displacement but also radial displacement occurs inside the specimen.

This study was performed to evaluation the consolidation behavior of agricultural reservoir in the very soft ground. The final settlement prediction methods by Hyperbolic and Asaoka methods were used to compare with the degree of consolidation estimated by exess pore water pressure. The dissipated excess pore water pressure during embankment construction and peak excess pore water pressure on the completed embankment were suggested for the estimation of the degree of consolidation. It was concluded that the degree of consolidation estimated from dissipated excess pore water pressure was more reliable than that from the peak excess pore water pressure.

The research effort has been focused on better calculation methods for the coefficient of consolidation under the theory of one dimensional consolidation. This research has been made available to engineers in the form of the computer program COMCv. The following conclusions can be drawn from the result of the engineering analysis, programming, and field observations. 1.Performing comparative study on six mehods(Taylor, Casagrande, Sivaram & Swamee,Su, Cour, and Scott) which can find out the coefficient of consolidation, the computer program COMCv is developed for each method. 2.Comparing the observed settlement and computed one in use of the coefficient of consolidation computed with COMCv, the result by the method of Sivaram & Swamee, Taylor, and Su is closer to the observed settlement.

The horizontal drain method by installing drains horizontally in the ground is often used to expedite the dispersion of pore water and to increase the strength of dredged soft clay under the action of gravity or vacuum. In this study a numerical analysis method is developed to predict the consolidation process of soft ground with horizontal drains. One-dimensional self-weight consolidation theory is extended tn three-dimensions] theory with appropriate boundary conditions of horizontal drains. In the condition of pore water drainage by gravity, the behavior of the dredged clay with horizontal drains is compared with that of the clay without drains. The influence of design factors of drains on consolidation process is also analyzed.
Glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites were manufactured by Rapid Press Consolidation Technique(RPCT) as functions of temperature, pressure and time in pre-heating, consolidation and solidification sections during the manufacturing processing. It was found that the material property is greatly affected by pre-heating temperature under vacuum, mold temperature and molding pressure. Among them, the temperature In the mold was the most critical factor in determining the mechanical properties and the molded conditions of specimen. The crystallinity of PET matrix was also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) measurements for various processing conditions. The level of crystallinity($X_c$) depended strongly on the mold temperature, cooling rate and the type of composite. The difference in $X_c$ is believed to be one of important factors in characterizing the mechanical properties.
