In this paper, we present the effect of buffer storage capacity un two-stage transfer lines in such a way as to introduce the production rate to be reduced which is called a Slowed Down(SD) state. A Markov model is used to establish a formulation for the analysis of the delays associated with the stage to be starved or blocked. Operating policies are proposed by analyzing the effect of the decision variables such as the production rates, the failure rates, buffer capacities and SD rates through computer simulation experiments.

This paper deals with reliability and MTTF analysis of a non-repairable man-machine system operating under different weather conditions. The system consists of a hardware(machine) and a two-operator standby subsystem such as the air combat maneuvering of fighters with dual seat. The failure times for the subsystems follow the exponential distribution with constant parameter. By considering not only the effect on hardware component but also the weather conditions and human performance factors such as the operator's errors, a Markov model is presented as a method for evaluating the system reliability of time continuous operation tasks. Laplace transforms of the various state probabilities have been derived and then reliability of the system, at any time t, has been computed by inversion process. MTTF has also been computed.

The age of information (AoI) was proposed to quantify the freshness of information about the status of a remote source system, which is defined as the amount of time that has elapsed since a packet was created at its source. This paper analyzes the age of information of a discrete time Geo/D/1/1 status update system. For this purpose, the system is modeled as a discrete-time two-state Markov chain. The stationary probability distributions for peak AoI and AoI are obtained. The average peak AoI, the average AoI, and the freshness ratio of information are also derived. Some numerical results of the analysis are presented.
The DCF of IEEE 802.11 standard coordinates transmissions onto the shared communication channel based on CSMA/CA protocol. Currently, 802,11 is the most widely deployed wireless LAN standard. In this paper, for 802.11-based wireless LAN we propose a service differentiation scheme adopting different contention window sizes and retransmission schemes for two different types of data packets and we present a Markov model for the state of a given station under a finite load traffic condition. We then derive an algorithm to find the transmission probability and the throughput. The proposed model is validated through simulation under various system settings.

An ansemble of N players arranged in a circle play a spatially dependent Parrondo game B. One player is randomly selected to play game B, which is based on the toss of a biased coin, with the amount of the bias depending on states of the selected player's two nearest neighbors. The player wins one unit with heads and loses one unit with tails. In game A' the randomly chosen player transfers one unit of capital to another player who is randomly chosen among N - 1 players. Game A' is fair with respect to the ensemble's total profit. The games are said to exhibit the Parrondo effect if game B is losing and the random mixture game C is winning and the reverse-Parrondo effect if game B is winning and the random mixture game C is losing. We compute the exact mean profits for games B and C by applying a state space reduction method with lumped Markov chains and we sketch the Parrondo and reverse-Parrondo regions for $3{\leq}N{\leq}6$.

Packet loss process of cdma2000 mobile Internet channel deployed in Korea is modeled as a two state Markov process known as Gilbert model. This paper proposes the procedures to derive four parameters of the our modified Gilbert model from packet loss trace taken from two major cdma2000 networks in Korea. These four parameters are derived in various situations, that is, with fixed and moving terminals, in open field and urban areas. They can be used to produce synthetic packet loss patterns for study of the channel. Moreover, if they are calculated on-line during multimedia service, they can be used to make loss protection controls adaptive to network condition.

WiMAX has been introduced as a competitive alternative for metropolitan broadband wireless access technologies. It is connection oriented and it can provide very high data rates, large service coverage, and flexible quality of services (QoS). Due to the large number of connections and flexible QoS supported by WiMAX, the uplink access in WiMAX networks is very challenging since the medium access control (MAC) protocol must efficiently manage the bandwidth and related channel allocations. In this paper, we propose and investigate a cost-effective WiMAX bandwidth management scheme, named the WiMAX partial sharing scheme (WPSS), in order to provide good QoS while achieving better bandwidth utilization and network throughput. The proposed bandwidth management scheme is compared with a simple but inefficient scheme, named the WiMAX complete sharing scheme (WCPS). A maximum entropy (ME) based analytical model (MEAM) is proposed for the performance evaluation of the two bandwidth management schemes. The reason for using MEAM for the performance evaluation is that MEAM can efficiently model a large-scale system in which the number of stations or connections is generally very high, while the traditional simulation and analytical (e.g., Markov models) approaches cannot perform well due to the high computation complexity. We model the bandwidth management scheme as a queuing network model (QNM) that consists of interacting multiclass queues for different service classes. Closed form expressions for the state and blocking probability distributions are derived for those schemes. Simulation results verify the MEAM numerical results and show that WPSS can significantly improve the network’s performance compared to WCPS.
Background: In South Korea, 22.3% of women ${\geq}50years$ of age and 37% of women ${\geq}70years$ of age visit the doctor to obtain treatment for osteoporosis. According to the analysis of the National Health Insurance Services claim data between 2008 and 2012, the number and incidence of hip and vertebral fractures increased during the same period. Denosumab, a newly marketed medicine in Korea, is the first RANK inhibitor. Methods: A cost-utility analysis was conducted from a societal perspective to prove the superiority of denosumab to alendronate. A Markov cohort model was used to investigate the cost-effectiveness of denosumab. A 6-month cycle length was used in the model, and all patients were individually followed up through the model, from their age at treatment initiation to their time of death or until 100 years of age. The model consisted of eight health states: well; hip fracture; vertebral fracture; wrist fracture; other osteoporotic fracture; post-hip fracture; post-vertebral fracture; and dead. All patients began in the well-health state. In this model, 5% discounted rate, two-year maximum offset time, and persistence were adopted. Results: The total lifetime costs for alendronate and denosumab were USD 5,587 and USD 6,534, respectively. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for denosumab versus alendronate was USD 20,600/QALY. Given the ICER threshold in Korea, the results indicated that denosumab was remarkably superior to alendronate. Conclusion: Denosumab is a cost-effective alternative to the oral anti-osteoporotic treatment, alendronate, in South Korea.

In this paper we propose a QoS-enhanced intelligent stochastic optimal fair real-time packet scheduler, QUEST, for 4G LTE traffic in routers. The objective of this research is to maximize the system QoS subject to the constraint that the processor utilization is kept nearly at 100 percent. The QUEST has following unique advantages. First, it solves the challenging problem of starvation for low priority process - buffered streaming video and TCP based; second, it solves the major bottleneck of the scheduler Earliest Deadline First's failure at heavy loads. Finally, QUEST offers the benefit of arbitrarily pre-programming the process utilization ratio.Three classes of multimedia 4G LTE QCI traffic, conversational voice, live streaming video, buffered streaming video and TCP based applications have been considered. We analyse two most important QoS metrics, packet loss rate (PLR) and mean waiting time. All claims are supported by discrete event and Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results show that the QUEST scheduler outperforms current state-of-the-art benchmark schedulers. The proposed scheduler offers 37 percent improvement in PLR and 23 percent improvement in mean waiting time over the best competing current scheduler Accuracy-aware EDF.
This study aims at the evaluation of the stationary distribution and the emptiness passage time for the effectiveness of water utility in the Keumgang estuary reservoir by two-step transition model. It was taken discrete Markovian correlated inflows for the joint probability of inflows and storage, and was used binomial distribution for inflows distribution. As the results, it was decreased from 0.952 to 0.904 the emptiness probability of the reservoir stationary distribution during 1952-1980, and from 0.900 to 0.829 during 1981-1989, and the average emptiness passage time was increased from 23 days to 37 days during 1952-1980, and from 29 days to 61 days during 1981-1989 at low state of storage. From this, it is found that the emptiness passage time is varied with the increase of the inflows auto-correlation coefficient in the Keumgang estuary reservoir. Therefore, it is understood that auto-correlation coefficient must be taken into consideration for the evaluation of water utility in a small reservoir at drought time.
