We determined the nuclear DNA content (genome size) of over 35 accessions each of bamboo and rattan species from Southeast Asia. The 2C DNA per nucleus was quantified by flow cytometry. The fluorescence of nuclei isolated from the leaves and stained with propidium iodide was measured. The genome size of the bamboo species examined was between 2.5 and 5.9 pg DNA per 2C nucleus. The genome size of the rattan species examined ranged from 1.8 to 10.5 pg DNA per 2C nucleus. This information will be useful for scientists working in diverse areas of plant biology such as biotechnology, biodiversity, genome analysis, plant breeding, physiology and molecular biology. Such data may be utilized to attempt to correlate the genome size with the ploidy status of bamboo species in cases where ploidy status has been reported.

Short stature homeobox-containing gene (SHOX) is a well-known causative gene for the short stature in Turner syndrome. The clinical manifestation of SHOX gene related disorders varies from SHOX haploinsufficiency, presenting with idiopathic short stature, disproportionate short stature, or Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis (LWD) to recessive form of extreme dwarfism and limb deformity in Langer mesomelic dysplasia. LWD is usually diagnosed upon suspicion based on short stature and skeletal abnormalities, and it is rarely accompanied with respiratory failure in the neonatal period. Here, we report the case of a newborn infant with LWD presenting with severe micrognathia that caused respiratory distress, which was diagnosed using microarray testing. Even when the manifestation of Madelung deformity is not yet apparent, LWD should be considered as one of underlying diseases related to congenital micrognathia.

The adaptive reuse of 20th-century high-rise architecture poses important questions about the prevalence of authorized discourses in the heritage conservation field. Based on a two-year teaching experience at Tongji University about the adaptive reuse of the Metropolo Hotel (Palmer and Turner, 1934), an iconic historic high-rise building in the Shanghai Bund area, this paper will show the extent to which disciplinary and urban authorized heritage discourses are present in the development of design and representation strategies in adaptive reuse. Using discourse analysis as a method, this paper will make the argument that disciplinary discourses have a limited effect in the practice of adaptive reuse, which is perceived as a fundamentally creative activity. At the same time, the paper reveals how urban discourses have a much more lasting effect, confirming the intimate links between adaptive reuse and the wider phenomena of beautification and gentrification of high-rise listed areas.

Since the late 20th century, various projects in the public domain where local communities and art organizations collaborate have been attempted in miscellaneous ways. In terms of anticipating an active attitude of the community, socially engaged project focuses on proactively changing everyday life and environment of people. An art collective, Assemble who won the Turner Prize in 2015 for one of their projects named Granby Four Streets (2013) has been admitted as an exemplary of this phenomenon, and it appears frequently in discussions about community-led projects. We investigate Granby Four Streets, as well as the documentation formed by the perspective of third parties based on the surveillance and criticism aspects. It asserts that the limitation of socially engaged projects that are kept ephemerally and easily forgotten could be overcome with the concept of documentation and its practice.

Social television encompasses the social media aspect of television viewing. This study attempts to investigate how social television influences Hispanic and national ethnic identification as well as social presence. Based on the theoretical framework of Tajfel and Turner's Social Identity Theory (SIT), this study focuses on the potential influence of social television on Hispanics' ethnic identifications and social presence. With a sample of 100 Hispanic students, we conducted a lab experiment to measure the effects of exposure to ethnic and non-ethnic related Twitter feeds on Hispanic and national ethnic identification along with social presence. Findings reveal that there was no significant difference between those exposed to the ethnic-identity related Twitter feed compared to those exposed to the non-ethnic identity related Twitter feed, followed by the control group not exposed to the Twitter feed at all. Implications were discussed.

본 기사는 2000년 3월 26일 미국 시애틀 소재 Kingdome 체육관 시설을 발파해체공법을 이용하여 해체한 사례로서 The Journal of Explosives Engineering(v.17 n.5, 2000)에 기고한 Dr. Douglas A. Anderson (Senior Consultant, West Chester, PA office of Schnabel Engineering Associates, Inc.)의 글을 옮긴 것이다. Kingdome 구조물의 해체와 해제 후 Seahawk Stadium 건설의 책임을 맡은 주계약자는 Turner Construction 회사이며 발파해체 사전준비 및 사후처리의 택일은 Aman Environment사, 발파해체 설계 및 시공은 CDI사, 주위 주요 구조물에 대한 영향평가 및 진동계측은 Schnabel Engineering Associates사가 맡아 수행하였다. 이 건물은 세계에서 가장 큰 규모의 쉘 콘크리트 돔 구조로 되어 있으며, 주위에 주요 구조물들이 위치하고 있고 특히 이 지역에 과거 발생했던 지진으로 인하여 주민들이 지반진동에 대한 피해나 또는 지진을 유발하수도 있다는 위험 가능성에 매우 예민하여 관심이 높았던 해체사례이다. 이 구조물을 한번에 붕괴시킬 경우 지반에 25,000톤의 중량이 충격으로 작용할 수 있으므로 충격을 최소화하기 위한 방법에 초점을 맞추어 설계되었으며 5,905개의 천공에 4,728파운드(약 2,145kg)의 폭약이 사용되었고 도폭선을 이용하여 기폭시켰다. 사용된 도폭선의 길이는 약 37.9 Km에 달하였다. 발파해체 기사에 나타나 있듯이 주위에 피해를 주지 않고 성공적으로 수행되었다.

24세의 무월경을 주소로 내원한 여성에게서 세포유전학적 검사를 시행하였다. GTG-분염법 결과, 환자의 핵형이 46,X,der(X)로 관찰되어 LSI Kallmann(KAL) 형광소식자[probes for Xp22.3 (KAL)과 CEP(X) for control]로 FISH 분석을 시행하였다. 비정상 X 염색체에서는 KAL (Xp22.3)에 대한 형광이 보이지 않았고, CEP(X)에 대한 형광이 두 개씩 관찰되었다. 간기세포 FISH 분석 결과, CEP(X) 형광소식자에 대해 분석한 세포의 90%에서 세 개의 형광이, 10%의 세포에서 하나의 형광이 관찰되어 두가지 cell line이 혼재되어 있는 모자이시즘을 확인하였다. 이들 결과들을 통해 환자의 핵형이 45,X/46,X,psu idic(X)(p22.1)이며, 이는 Xqter${\rightarrow}$Xp22.1 부분은 중복되어 있고, Xpter${\rightarrow}$Xp22.1 부분은 결실된 상태로 터너 증후군의 변형된 형태임을 판명하였다. Idic(X)와 낮은 비율의 모자이시즘을 확인하는데 CEP(X) 형광소식자로 FISH를 시행하는 것이 유용하였다.

한국의 전통악기, 대금은 악기의 특이한 음색과 다양한 기법으로 한국의 고유한 아름다움을 전하면서 동시에 국제적으로 관심을 받고 있다. 대금 연주가 및 음악인류학 연구자로서 활동하고 있는 본인은 대금 연주를 통해 클래식, 동아시아 음악, 전자 음악, 재즈 등 다양한 배경을 가진 연주가들과 한국 외 세계 여러 곳에서 협업을 진행해 왔다. 공연을 기반으로 한 협업은 음악간의 문화적 간극을 극복하고자 한 빅토르 터너 (Victor Turner)가 주장한 '다문화적 퍼포먼스 (Intercultural Performances)'를 지향하는 연구 주제와 병행하여 진행되었다. 본 연구는 그 중의 한 예로서 한국 전통 음악과 클래식 음악의 협업을 기반으로 한 공연 연구이다. 본 연구의 분석 대상은 본인이 한국의 저명한 작곡가 김대성(1967년생)에게 위촉한 대금과 서양 악기를 위한 두 곡, '님'과 '청'을 기반으로 이루어져 있다. 협업 내용은 리차드 셰크너 (Richard Schechner)의 공연 이론 (Performance Theory)을 기반으로 음악 인류학 및 공연 연구의 핵심적인 문제를 다루고 있다. 본 공연 연구의 목적을 두 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 첫번째, 대금의 현대화 과정을 클래식 음악의 문맥 안에서 구체적으로 살펴 보고자 한다. 두번째, 본 공연 작업은 영상과 음원 등의 자료를 이용해 분석되고 이를 마이클 텐저 (Michael Tenzer)의 '문화적 상대화 (Cultural Relativism)' 개념에 적용시켜 본다.

본 연구에서는 괭생이모자반 에탄올 추출물의 항비만 효과에 대해 알아보고자 3T3-L1 preadipocyte에서 Oil Red O staining과 triglyceride content, adipogenesis의 발현에 대해 조사하였다. MTT assay를 통해 괭생이모자반 에탄올 추출물의 세포 독성을 확인 해 본 결과 $200{\sim}1,000{\mu}g/ml$ 농도에서 90% 이상의 세포 생존율을 확인 할 수 있었다. 또한 insulin, dexamethasone과 IBMX 복합물을 처리하여 분화를 유도하였을 때는 분화유도제를 처리하지 않은 군에 비해 활발하게 지방구를 형성하였으나, 괭생이모자반 에탄올 추출물을 250, 500, $1,000{\mu}g/ml$ 농도로 처리하였을 때는 농도 의존적으로 지방구 형성을 억제하였다. 이를 정량하여 triglyceride content (%)로 나타낸 결과 농도별로 13%, 16%, 23% 억제 효과를 나타내었다. 또한 Western blot assay를 통해 adipogenic transcription factor의 발현양상을 비교해 본 결과, 분화유도제 처리에 의해 $C/EBP{\alpha}$, $C/EBP{\beta}$와 $PPAR{\gamma}$의 발현이 증가하였으나, 괭생이모자반 에탄올 추출물을 처리하였을 때는 이러한 전사인자들의 발현이 농도 의존적으로 감소됨을 확인 할 수 있었다. 이상의 결과를 통해 괭생이모자반 에탄올 추출물은 adipogenic transcription factor의 발현을 조절하여 지방세포의 분화를 억제하였으며, 지방구와 triglyceride 생성을 감소시켜 최종적으로 비만억제 효과를 나타낸다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

본 연구의 목적은 영화 <이미테이션 게임>에서 사용되는 작곡가 데스플라(Alexandre Desplat)의 음악(청각적 정보)과 틸덤(Morten Tyldum)감독의 연출에 의하여 표현되는 영상(시각적 정보)이 연합하여 생성하는 의미를 살펴보는 것이다. 본 연구자는 영화에서 나타나는 청각적·시각적 정보가 어떻게 연합하는지를 연구하기 위하여 즈비코프스키(Lawrence Zwikowski)의 개념적 혼성이론을 방법론으로 채택하였다. 즈비코프스키는 포코니에(Golles Fauconnier)와 터너(Mark Turner)가 고안한 개념적 혼성 망(Conceptual Integration Networks, CIN)을 사용하여 청각적·시각적 정보의 연합에 의해 생성되는 의미를 분석하였다. 따라서 본 연구자는 <이미테이션 게임>에서 나타나는 음악과 영상의 조합을 연구하기 위해 음악과 영상에 의한 CIN분석을 연구 방법으로 적용하였다. 작곡가 데스플라는 에올리아 선법을 사용하여 조성적 선율 진행에 의한 익숙함을 교묘하게 피하여 주인공을 표현하였다. 또한 이 에올리아 선법은 영상을 통하여 나타나는 내러티브와 효과적인 연합을 위해 다양한 변형을 취하고 있다. 먼저 변박자와 단조 코드의 활용은 등장인물들의 불안정한 감정을 대변하는 반면, 간간히 활용되는 클리셰한 선율 진행과 장조 코드는 영상의 안정적인 분위기와 연합한다. 또한 데스플라는 긍정적 또는 부정적 반응을 만들기 위해 악기의 변형을 통한 다양한 음색변화와 기복이 심한 음량변화를 활용하였다. 본 연구자는 이러한 음악 및 음색 변화로 생성되는 청각적 신호의 의미가 영상에 의한 시각적 정보와 연합하여 영화가 내포하는 의미를 강화하고 있음을 확인하였다.
