The present study conducted computational simulation for multiphase flow in the flame spray coating process with commercially available Ni-Cr powders. The flows in a flame spray gun is characterized by very complex phenomena including combustion, turbulent flows, and convective and radiative heat transfer. In this study, we used a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of Fluent (ver. 6.3.26) to predict gas dynamics involving combustion, gas and particle temperature distributions, and multi-dimensional particle trajectories with the use of the discrete phase model (DPM). We also examined the effect of particle size on the flame spray process. It was found that particle velocity and gas temperature decreased rapidly in the radial direction, and they were substantially affected by the particle size.
An efficient Newton-GMRES algorithm is presented for computing two-dimensional steady compressible viscous flows on unstructured hybrid meshes. The scheme is designed on cell-centered finite volume method which accepts general polygonal meshes. Steady-state solution is obtained with pseudo-transient continuation strategy. The preconditioned, restarted general minimum residual(GMRES) method is employed in matrix-free form to solve the linear system arising at each Newton iteration. The incomplete LU fartorization is employed for the preconditioning of linear system. The Spalart-Allmars one equation turbulence model is fully coupled with the flow equations to simulate turbulence effect. The accuracy, efficiency and robustness of the presently developed method are demonstrated on various test problems including laminar and turbulent flows over flat plate and airfoils.
The paper focuses on the integration of a non-linear one-dimensional model of Synthetic Jet (SJ) actuator in a well-assessed numerical simulation method for turbulent compressible flows. The computational approach is intended to the implementation of a numerical tool suited for flow control simulations with affordable CPU resources. A strong compromise is sought between the use of boundary conditions or zero-dimensional models and the full simulation of the actuator cavity, in view of long-term simulation with multiple synthetic jet actuators. The model is integrated in a multi-domain numerical procedure where the controlled flow field is simulated by a standard CFD method for compressible RANS equations, while flow inside the actuator is reduced to a one-dimensional duct flow with a moving piston. The non-linear matching between the two systems, which ensures conservation of the mass, momentum and energy is explained. The numerical method is successfully tested against three typical test cases: the jet in quiescent air, the SJ in cross flow and the flow control on the NACA0015 airfoil.

An oscillating body motion with extremely large amplitude has been studied using the viscous flow solver. Time simulations of oscillating ship hull in prescribed heave and roll motions are presented using RANS method with FAM approach (Chen, 1995). For viscous flows, laminar flow and turbulent flow with $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model are considered and compared. The viscous flow solver of RANS method is performed together with a Chimera type of multi-block grid system to demonstrate the advantage of accurate and efficient zonal approach. In the present study, effects of viscosity and oscillation degree are discussed using Re=1000 and Re=1000000. Large motion of oscillating body shows clear vortex propagation that is not possible for inviscid flow to present.
This paper presents the result of a computational study on the wake characteristics of two tanker models. i.e HSVA and DYNE hull forms. The focus of the study is on the distributions of axial. radial and tangential velocities of the two hull forms in way of the propeller, especially over the propeller disk. The effect of bilge vortices on the velocity distribution is also concerned. For the computation of stern and wake flows of the two hull forms. the incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations are numerically solved by the use of a second order finite difference method, which employs a four stage Runge-Kutta scheme with a residual averaging technique and the Baldwin-Lomax model. The calculated pressure distributions on the hull surface and the axial. radial and tangential velocity distributions over the propeller disk are presented for the two hull forms. Finally, the result of wake analysis for the computed wake distribution over the propeller disk is given in comparison with those for the experimental wake distribution for the both hull forms.
A numerical code which can simulate unsteady, incompressible and 3-dimensional flows in an engine cylinder has been developed. The governing equations based on the cylindrical coordinate are discretized by the finite volume method with staggered variable arrangements. A geometric conservation rule is also incorporated into the simulation code in order to deal with a moving boundary problem. For the unsteady simulation, a fractional step method is adopted. The law of wall is applied to the wall boundaries and standard $k-\;{\varepsilon}$ model is used to describe the in-cylinder turbulent flow. The model cylinder has one eccentric port, flat piston and flat cylinder-head. The comparisons with experimental data show fairly well qualitative agreement.

A method for measuring three-dimensional turbulent flows by the hot-wire anemometer is introduced. Mojolla's method using the X-type probe is adopted and modified for the slantwire probe without the linearizer. The probe is aligned with specified angles to the given uniform flow and the shear layer to verify the measuring errors due to the three-dimensionality and the turbulence level. Errors in the measurements of mean velocities and Reynolds stresses increase with the degree of three dimensionality in the flow. The incoming flow angle of 20 degree seems to be the limit of reasonable flow measurements. But there still appear large data scatterings in Reynolds shear stresses.
This paper presents an effective numerical method for analyzing three-dimensional unsteady conjugate heat transfer problems of a curved pipe subjected to infernally thermal stratification. In the present numerical analyses, the thermally stratified flows in the pipe are simulated using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$turbulent model and the unsteady conjugate heat transfer is treated numerically with a simple and convenient numerical technique. The unsteady conjugate heat transfer analysis method is implemented in a finite volume thermal-hydraulic computer code based on a non-staggered grid arrangement, SIMPLEC algorithm and higher-order bounded convection scheme. Numerical calculations have been performed far the two cases of thermally stratified pipe flows where the surging directions are opposite each other i.e. In-surge and out-surge. The results show that the present numerical analysis method is effective to solve the unsteady flow and conjugate heat transfer in a curved pipe subjected to infernally thermal stratification.

The objective of present study is to analyze a concentric triple-passage heat exchanger for an optimal design of a continuous hot steel-tube cooling system, where a hot-steel tube line is passing through an antioxidant gas with a constant speed. Velocities and temperatures of the inert gas flowing between inner and outer tubes are calculated theoretically for laminar and numerically for turbulent flow regimes. From their profiles Nusselt numbers and friction factors are calculated (or various ratios of inner/outer tube radii and relative velocities. With these Nusselt numbers triple-passage heat exchangers are investigated for their thermal characteristics. It is shown that heat transfer coefficients based on ratios of average heat fluxes from inner and outer tubes might result in great errors for the temperature distributions of the flows, since local heat transfer coefficients for flows through an annulus are dependent on local wall heat flux ratios.

A three-dimensional thermo-hydraulic computer code is developed for simulation of incompressible flows in complex geometries. The computer code employs a body-fitted, nonorthogonal grid system in order to efficiently handle the complex geometries encountered in many engineering applications. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations and the convection term is treated by higher-order bounded schemes. The cell-centered, nonstaggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is avoided by use of momentum interpolation practice. The computer code employs the SIMPLE algorithm for pressure and velocity coupling and the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence for turbulent calculation. The computer code has been tested through application to a variety of test problems and some results are presented in this paper
