In this study, RMA2 and RMA4, the 2-D depth-averaged models, were employed to simulate the two-dimensional mixing characteristics of the pollutants in the natural streams. The velocity and depth were first calculated using RMA2, 2-D hydrodynamic model, and then the resulting flow field was inputted to RMA4, 2-D water quality model, to compute the concentration field. RMA models were verified using the velocity and concentration data measured in S-curved meandering channel. The results showed that the RMA2 model simulated well the phenomenon that the maximum velocity line is located at the Inner bank of meandering channel, and the RMA4 model was well adapted to reproduce the general mixing behavior and the separation of tracer clouds. Comparing model simulations with measured data in the field experiments, RMA2 model simulated well general flow field and tendency that the maximum velocity line skewed toward the outer bank which were found in field experiments. The simulations of RMA4 model showed that the center of the tracer cloud tends to follow the path in which the maximum velocity occurs. In this study, the dispersion coefficients are fine-tuned based on the measured coefficients calculated using field concentration data, and the results show reasonable agreement with predictive equations.

Hydrocarbon compounds in vadose zone soils caused by adsorption onto the surfaces of solid particles are generally considered to show retardation effect. In this study, we investigated the retardation effect on the transport of Benzene in a sandy soil by conducting batch and column tests. The batch test was conducted by equilibrating dry soil mass with Benzene solutions of various initial concentrations. and by analyzing the concentrations of Benzene in initial and equilibrated solutions using HPLC. The column test consisted of monitoring the concentrations of effluent versus time known as a breakthrough curve (BTC). We used KCl and Benzene solutions with the concentration of 10 g/L and 0.88 g/L as a tracer, and injected them into the inlet boundary of the soil sample as a square pulse type respectively, and monitored the effluent concentrations at the exit boundary under a steady state condition using an EC-meter and HPLC. From the batch test, we obtained a distribution coefficient assuming that a linear adsorption isotherm exists and calculated the retardation factor based on the bulk density and porosity of the column sample. We also predicted the column BTC curve using the retardation factor obtained from the distribution coefficient and compared with the measured BTC of Benzene. The results of the column test showed that i) the peak concentration of Benzene was much smaller than that of KCl and ⅱ) the travel times of peak concentrations for the two tracers were more or less identical. These results indicate that adsorption of Benzene onto the sand panicles occurred during the pulse propagation but the retardation of Benzene caused by adsorption was not present in the studied soil. Comparison of the predicted with the measured BTC of Benzene resulted in a poor agreement due to the absence of the retardation phenomenon. The only way to describe the absolute decrease of Benzene concentration in the column leaching experiment was to introduce a decay or sink coefficient in the convection-dispersion equation (CDE) model to account for an irreversible sorption of Benzene in the aqueous phase.

This study presents a numerical model that can simulate changes of particle size distribution (PSD) of PCB-contaminated coastal sediments. The developed model has one spatial dimension including sedimentation and vortical dispersion as well as coagulation. The reason for considering the vortical transport mechanisms is to calculate residence time of the particles. Using the model and Initial PSD data based on actual coastal sediments contaminated with PCBs, this study shows results of model simulations. Within 48 hours of the simulation time, the PSD changed significantly and the particles were removed from water in different rates between different particle sizes. It also shows that coagulation can act an important role in this process. The model may be useful in assessing the range of resuspended sediments that can pollute neighboring areas during environmental remediation projects such as dredging.

Donghae city is one of the most representative cement industrial city in Korea. The area is faced with the East Sea to the East and with high montane region of Tae-Back mountain range to the West. Many pollutant sources of air pollution are located near the coast, but the largest point sources of the region are located at the bottom of the mountain area in Donghae city. The local wind is highly affected by local topography and plays an important role in transport and dispersion of contaminants from the pollution sources. This study was designed to evaluate enhancement of MM5 predictions by using Four Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA), the SONDE data and the national meteorological station, data only. The alternative meteorological fields predicted with and without FDDA were used to simulate spatial and temporal variations of NOx in combined with Atmospheric Dispersion Models (CALPUFF). For the modeling domain, the alternative meteorological fields with 1.1 km spatial resolution were interpolated to the CALMET with 0.5 km resolution. The vertical layers set to have 35 and 12 layers for MM5 and CALPUFF, respectively. MM5 with the FDDA did not resulted in significant improvement of meteorological field prediction in Donghae region, which is primarily because of complex geography and wind scheme. The result of CALPUFF, however, showed reduction of uncertainty errors by using the interpolation scheme of the actual measurement data.

We have studied the effect of platinum addition on the supercon ducting properties of YB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{7-x}$ (123) compound and elucidated the mechanism of fine dispersion of $Y_2$BaCu $O_{5}$(211) particles in YB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{7-x}$ superconductor prepared by melting method from the metallurgical point of view. In this study, BaCu $O_2$ and CuO-rich phase unreacted during the peritecitc reaction markedly decreased by the 211 powder addition. The 211 particle of Pt-fee sintered samples exhibited 8~10$\mu$m in size, but in 1wt%Pt-added sample, 211 particles were finely dispersed in 123 matrix and the size of 211 particle was about 1~2$\mu$m. And, the critical temperature( $T_{c. zero}$) of Pt doped samples was 91.5K and the transport critical current density ( $J_{c}$) of Pt-doped samples was much more than 10$^4$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The high $J_{c}$ and fine dispersion of 211 particles of Pt doped YB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{7-x}$ superconductor are attributed to $Ba_4$CuP $t_2$$O_{8}$ compounds formed during the partial melting, which were considered als nucleation sites of 211 particles, rather than Pt inself.han Pt inself.

The dispersion of a pollutant in a turbulent boundary layer has been described in this study by using a two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and the Smagorinsky sub-grid-scale (SGS) model. The scalar transport equation corresponding to the pollutant concentration is adopted; the pollutant is considered to be in a continuous phase. The pollutant source is classified as ground-level source (GLS) and elevated-point source (ES). Air velocity and particle concentration profile for the pollutant are compared with the respective results and profiles obtained in the experiments of Fackrell and Robins (1982) and Raupach and Legg (1983). The numerical results obtained in this study, i.e., the simulation and the experimental data for the mean flow velocity profiles and the pollutant concentration profiles, are in good agreement with each other.

Numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the dispersion characteristics of the pollutant around a Wolsung coastal area at located nuclear power plants. Numerical experiments by using EFDC(Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) showed good agreements by comparison with the time series and harmonic analysis of the tidal elevations. The released pollutants moved in north direction at flood tide and in south direction at ebb tide. The calculated salinity and temperatures showed good agreements with the observed results by NFRDI(National Fisheries Research & Development Institute). The water circulation due to the variations of the temperature, salinity and tidal components were analyzed to estimate the dispersion characteristics of the pollutant.
Quantitative understanding of a random error that is associated with Lagrangian particle dispersion modeling is a prerequisite for backward-in-time mode simulations. This study aims to quantify the random error of the WRF-FLEXPART model and suggest an optimum number of the Lagrangian particles for backward-in-time simulations over the Seoul metropolitan area. A series of backward-in-time simulations of the WRF-FLEXPART model has conducted at two receptor points by changing the number of Lagrangian particles and the relative error, as a quantitative indicator of random error, is analyzed to determine the optimum number of the release particles. The results show that in the Seoul metropolitan area a 1-day Lagrangian transport contributes 80~90% in residence time and ~100% in atmospheric enhancement of carbon monoxide. The relative errors in both the residence time and the atmospheric concentration enhancement are larger when the particles release in the daytime than in the nighttime, and in the inland area than in the coastal area. The sensitivity simulations reveal that the relative errors decrease with increasing the number of Lagrangian particles. The use of small number of Lagrangian particles caused significant random errors, which is attributed to the random number sampling process. For the particle number of 6000, the relative error in the atmospheric concentration enhancement is estimated as -6% ± 10% with reduction of computational time to 21% ± 7% on average. This study emphasizes the importance of quantitative analyses of the random errors in interpreting backward-in-time simulations of the WRF-FLEXPART model and in determining the number of Lagrangian particles as well.
The objective of this research was to characterize the fate and transport of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater in the Daejeon industrial area. Five subsidiary monitoring wells were newly installed and two existing wells were utilized for the investigation and the reduction process of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater of the Daejeon(Mun-pyeong) national groundwater monitoring station. The Cr(VI) concentrations at the shallow aquifer well of the station were in the range of 3.2-4.5 mg/L indicating continuous contamination. However, Cr was not detected at the deep bedrock well and the other monitoring wells except MPH-1 and 3. The Cr(VI) concentrations of MPH-1 and MPH-3 were below the drinking water guideline value (0.05 mg/L). Therefore, the plume of the Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater was predicted to be confined within the narrow boundary around the station. The soluble/exchangeable Cr(VI) concentrations were below the detection limit in all core and slime samples taken from the five newly installed wells. Although the exact source of contamination was not directly detected in the study area, the spatial Cr(VI) distribution in groundwater and characteristics of the core samples indicated that the source and the dispersion range were confined within the 100 m area from the monitoring station. The contamination might be induced from the unlined landfill of industrial wastes which was observed during the installation of an subsidiary monitoring well. For the evaluation of the natural attenuation of Cr(VI), available reduction capacities of Cr(VI) with an initial concentration of 5 mg/L were measured in soil and aquifer materials. Dark-gray clay layer samples have high capacities of Cr(VI) reduction ranging from 58 to 64%, which is obviously related to organic carbon contents of the samples. The analysis of reduction capacities implied that the soil and aquifer materials controlled the dispersion of Cr(VI) contamination in this area. However, some possibilities of dispersion by the preferential flow cannot be excluded due to the limited numbers of monitoring wells. We suggest the removal of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater by periodical pumping, and the continuous groundwater quality monitoring for evaluation of the Cr(VI) dispersion should be followed in the study area.
In this study, a 1-D laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the characteristics of transient unsaturated solute transport by using two kinds of soils of which properties were known by test. Especially the TDR method which is proposed in this study was used to measure water content and solute concentration. As results, in the transient flow, the wetting front moves down rapidly, and the distribution of solute concentration near the wetting front showed the similar type of the water content distribution(semi-bell type). A numerical model HYDRUS was used to compare with the experimental results. Numerical results for the water movement are similar to experimental result. However, numerical results of the distribution of solute concentration are more scattered than experimental results. It means that measured dispersivity, numerical dispersion, adsorption coefficient, and soil sample size etc. should be considered in order to determine the dispersivity used in the numerical model. The present measuring method was proved to be superior to other formula and to be an available method to apply to solute transport test. The measuring error of the developed method is estimated smaller than 10% while water content is larger than 0.15.
