  • Flow phenomena such as the pressure transients Inside a high-speed railway tunnel and the Impulsive waves at the exit of the tunnel are closely associated with the characteristics of the entry compression wave, which is generated by a train entering the tunnel. Tunnel entrance hood may be an effective means for alleviating the Impulsive waves and pressure transients. The objective of the current work is to explore the effects of the train nose shape and the entrance hood on the characteristics of the entry compression wave. Numerical calculations using the method of characteristics were applied to one-dimensional, unsteady, compressible flow field with respect to high-speed railway/tunnel systems. Two types of the entrance hoods and various train nose shapes were employed to reveal their influences on the entry compression wave for a wide range of train speeds. The results showed that the entry compression wave length increases as the train nose becomes longer and the train speed becomes lower. The entry compression wave length in the tunnel with hood becomes longer than that of no hood. Maximum pressure gradient in the compression wavefront reduces by the entrance hood. The results of the current work provide useful data for the design of tunnel entrance hood.

  • Hydraulic Transients would be occurred since pressure is increased or decreased when water speed inside of pipeline is rapidly changed A study on water hammer has become more important because the pumping stations were big and the systems conveying the fluid through the large and long transmission pipelines were complex. In this study, the method of characteristic line was adopted to evaluate the valve-induced water hammer phenomena in a pumps feedwater system.

  • This paper presents a wavelet-based neural network technology for the detection and classification of the various types of power quality disturbances. Power quality phenomena are short-time problems and of many varieties. Particularly, the transients happen during very short durations to the nano- and microsecond. Thus, a method for detecting and classifying transient signals at the same time and in an automatic combines the properties of the wavelet transform and the advantages of neural networks. Especially, the additional feature extraction to improve the recognition rate is considered. The configuration of the hardware of WN (PQ-DAS) and some case studies are described.

  • This paper analyses the transient phenomena against lightning surge on underground power cable systems. For analysis, several actual underground power cable systems are modeled using ATP. In lightning surge strokes, the various unbalanced conditions including the length of crossbonded lead, the breakdown of CCPU and distance unbalance are considered. This paper is expected to contribute the establishment of proper protection methods against transients on underground power cable systems.

  • This paper presents an effective method to analyze the dynamic characteristics for the shilling transients of power transmission system using the multibody dynamics, which is composed of subsystem equation, subsystem assemble, and the self-determining technique for the system degree of freedom. Using the advantages of multibody dynamics, the proposed method can be used easily for mathematical models of mechanical systems, such as a power transmission, compared with newtonian method. With this theory, dynamic simulation program was developed. The program can be used to verify system performances, transient phenomena, and other dynamic problems. The simulation of a target system was presented, and its validity was attained by being compared with the previous analysis using newtonian method.

  • A fluid transient analysis for the propellant flow in a monopropellant propulsion system is conducted using the method of characteristics (MOC). Algebraic simultaneous equations method and Clamor's rule method utilized to drive the compatible and characteristic equations are reviewed to understand MOC more extensively. The identification of fluid transient phenomena of propulsion system of Koreasat 1 is carried out through parametric studies. Also this work describes the reason that the propulsion system of Koreasat 1 has no orifice to control flow transients or to limit the initial hydrazine flow rate for the first-pulse firing.

  • This paper introduces optical methods for in-situ measurement of surface temperature and pressure transient in thermal processes having nanosecond time scales. In the temperature measurement, a p -Si thin film whose refractive index is calibrated as a function of temperature is embedded beneath the sample surface and the photothermal reflectance is monitored for estimating the surface temperature. The pressure transients are measured using the photoacoustic optical deflection method. The experimental technique is used to analyze the nanosecond laser induced vaporization process that is central to numerous engineering and bio-medical applications. Based on the experimental results, discussions are made on the experimental technique and the physical mechanisms of laser-driven explosive vaporization phenomena.

  • The entry compression wave, which is generated at the entrance of the tunnel, is almost always associated with the pressure transients in the tunnel as well as the impulse noise at the exit of the tunnel. It is highly required to design the train nose shape that can minimize such undesirable phenomena. The objective of the current work is to investigate the effects of the train nose shape on the entry compression wave. Numerical computations were applied to one-dimensional unsteady compressible flow in high-speed railway train/tunnel systems. A various shape of train noses were tested for a wide range of train speeds. The results showed that the strength of the entry compression wave is not influenced by the train nose shape, but the time variation of pressure in the entry compression wavefront is strongly related to the train nose shape. The current method of the characteristics was able to represent a desirable nose shape for various train speeds. Optimum nose shape was found to considerably reduce the maximum pressure gradient of the entry compression wave.

  • Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) are a main cause of voltage flicker due to the interaction of the high demand currents of the load with the supply system impedance. The stochastic models have described the physical phenomena of EAFs. An alternative approach is to include deterministic chaos in the characterization of the arc currents. In this paper, a chaotic approach to such modeling is described and justified. At the same time, a DLL (Dynamic Link Library) module, which is a FORTRAN interface with TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems), is developed to implement the chaotic load model in the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The details of the module and the results of tests performed on the module to verify the model and to illustrate its capabilities are presented in this paper.
