The Reinvention of Traditional Cuisine as Counterculture (대항문화로서의 전통음식의 재탄생)

  • This paper discusses how the traditional cuisine of Korea capitalizes on "nostalgia" for the past. While examining the (re)invention of Buddhist cuisine and Andong food, this paper contends that traditional Korean cuisine is commodified through a process of de-contexualization. This paper first discusses the possibility that the idea of traditional cuisine is an invention in the first place. The history of temple food, for instance, suggests that it was created as a vehicle for circulating and implementing the ruling ideology in the ancient societies of China. This paper then turns to the issue of the growing influence of traditional cuisine in contemporary Korean culture, which is related to the public's demand for healthy food and also tied with the South Korean society's need for promoting a national cuisine in the age of globalization. The rise of traditional cuisine is a sign that people are seeking to reform their eating habits and form a counterculture. Yet, another side of the story is that consumers end up taking part in the self-expanding capitalist market with more consumer choices rather than forming a genuine counterculture. In this respect, the reinvention of temple food is closely related to what Jean and John L. Comaroff call the "emergence of consumption as a privileged site for the fabrication of self and society, of culture and identity".

Assessment of the Characteristics of Temple Wastes in Natural Parks (자연공원지역 사찰쓰레기의 특성평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the temple wastes and suggest the waste management guidelines for temples in natural parks. Study results revealed four important findings. First, it was found that the average quantity of the total temple wastes was 85,786g/day which was composed of general wastes(44,617g/day), food wastes(20,292g/day), recycling wastes(20.825g/day), and buddhist service wastes(60g/day). The average generation per capita of the temple wastes was 1,511g/capita day and the average bulk density was 0.102kg/l. Second, the food scrap was of small quantity(72.5g/day) because the traditional buddhist eating method, "Baru meal(鉢盂供養)" prohibits food abuse. This amount is very little compared to that produced in the general household in Korea. Third, the average quantity of the buddhist service wastes was 300-1,650g/one time. This wastes occupied 0.07% of the total temple wastes. Fourth, the average waste generated by visitors was 182.8g/person, which occupied 87.1% of the total temple wastes and costed 52,100,000 Wons to treat.

A Study on the Landscape of Sangwonsa Temple of Early Joseon Period by Records and Picture in Gwaneumhyeonsanggi (관음현상기(觀音現相記)를 통해서 살펴본 조선 초기 상원사의 경관연구)

  • Gwaneumhyeonsanggi is a writing of praise of the incarnated White-robed Gwanseumbosal by Choi Hang which King Sejo witnessed at the top of Damhwajeon during his visit to Sangwonsa Temple. In Gwaneumhyeonsanggi, White-robed Gwaneumhwahyeondo drawn by a painter is attached, which demonstrate the feature of Sangwonsa temple in the early Joseon period. This study aimed to examine the landscape features of Sangwonsa in the early Joseon period by records and picture in Gwaneumhyeonsanggi. As a result, it was determined that the building display, spatial structure, building type and landscape arrangement seemed to be unique compared with other temples. In particular, the treatment of scenic stone(景石) is important in terms of landscape because it complements existing ideas and concepts that the temple landscape was mainly made of water as the main resources. Also the trees around the temple shown in the picture in can be compared with the current state of the data is valuable.

A Study on Recognition, Preference and Popularization of Temple Food - Among Local and Foreign Restaurant Visitors (사찰음식에 대한 인식, 기호도 및 대중화방안 연구 - 사찰음식전문점을 이용한 내·외국인대상으로)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to identify factors that influence the consumption of temple food and to find systematic methods improving the popularization of temple food. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was applied to 304 temple food restaurant visitors, including 232 local and 72 foreign individuals. The questionnaire was designed to investigate recognition, consumption, preference and popularization of temple food among restaurant visitors. Results: The study population consisted of 30.6% men, 69.4% women. 76.3% were Korean while 23.7% were foreigners. The responses on their impression on temple food contained the words, "vegetarian" (4.64), "plain and familiar" (4.19), and "good for dieting" (4.16). The most commont reason to favor temple food was its "mild taste" (63.0%) in the local group while foreigners preferred it because it is "good for health" (35.8%). The preferred kind of side dish of the local group was roasted dish (4.40), stir-fried dish (4.39), blanched vegetables (4.36), and food boiled with sauce (4.23); foreigner's high preference was for stir-fried (4.67), Jangachi (4.63), food boiled with sauce (4.56), and Buggak (4.55).. Most respondents thought that it is necessary to maintain the traditional form of temple food. While 43.5 percent of Koreans responded that "the five pungent vegetables" could be allowed, 62.8 percent of foreign respondents said it is permissible. Conclusions: A systematic approach to improve the temple food that reflects both foreign and local preference while maintaining its originality is necessary for its globalization. Furthermore, restaurants specialized in temple food should be expanded and promoted through effective marketing strategies that would make the cuisine easily accessible and spread throughout the world.

  • After destruction of the Naksansa which was due to Yangyang forest fire, this the fundamental research about the disaster prevention countermeasures of tradition buddhist temple cultural treasure was performed. The present condition of tradition buddhist temple and related laws were investigated and the present damage condition of the Naksansa was surveyed. Also, the fire damage cases of tradition buddhist temple and the fire laws and regulations were investigated, and the survey about disaster prevention countermeasures was carried out. This research drew up the basic material about the disaster prevention countermeasures of traditional buddhist temple.

A Study on the Official Building Register of Korean Traditional Temple - Focused on the Official Building Register of Beomeo-sa - (한국불교 전통사찰의 건축물공부(建築物公簿)에 관한 연구 -범어사 건축물대장을 중심으로-)

  • This thesis is to analyze the origin and transformation of the official building registers of Korean traditional temples, and also to suggest the amendment of their wrong archives. Especially, this study is to examine these subjects focused on Beomeo-sa which has maintained fine registers. The results are as follow; 1. In Chosun Dynasty, the Ip-an had been used, and in the period of Daehan-Empire, the Ga-gei had been used as each official registers for the common buildings. The other hand, the lists of properties and the legal registers had been used as official registers for the temple buildings between 1911 and 1962. 2. The current official building registers have been firstly recorded under in 1962. At that time, the current official registers have been also recorded for the Buddhist temple buildings. 3. Most of the official building registers of Buddhist temples are incomplete. Especially, these have usually the indistinct building names and wrong building areas. These were mainly caused by direct copying of the old registers recorded in 1956, the period of Buddhist confusion. Furthermore, the registers have been poorly operated by monks and offices. 4. Therefore, the registers has to be corrected as follow; The omitted buildings have to be added and the duplicated buildings have to be removed in the summary heading registers. The indistinct building names recorded in 1956 have to be correct into actual proper building names. The wrong building areas recorded in 1956 have to be correct into actual measurement building areas.

Metallurgical Observation of the Buddhist Bell of Youngmoon Mountain Sangwonsa Temple (용문산 상원사 범종의 금속학적 고찰)

  • The microstructure, chemical composition, and lead isotope ratio of the Buddhist bell of Yongmoon Mountain Sangwonsa temple, which was selected as one of the three great bells of Korea by Japanese historians, were analyzed in order to estimate the origin of the material and the time of casting. The microstructure of the temple bell was composed of a copper matrix phase with ${\alpha}$, a face centered cubit lattice structure, a ${\delta}$ phase with $Cu_{41}$ $(Sn,Ag,Sb)_{11}$ as the chemical structural formula, dispersed lead and $Cu_2S$ particles, and locally agglomerated fine particles. Through analysis of the chemical composition of the bell, a criterion (Pb: 0-3.0 wt%, Sn: 10-15 wt%) for distinguishing the bells of the Shilla dynasty from the bells of the Koryo Chosun dynasty is proposed. Examining the lead isotope ratio of $^{207}Pb/^{206}Pb$ and $^{208}Pb/^{206}Pb$ of the Buddhist bell of Sangwonsa temple proved that the bell was fabricated using raw materials in South Korea, which led to the conclusion that the bell was cast in Korea and the top board of the bell has been damaged by an unknown individual. The criteria of distinguishing the bells from the Shilla dynasty from the bells of the Koryo Chosun dynasty presented for the first time in this research is expected to aid in identifying and estimating the previously unclear production years of other bells.

A Study on the Installation Period of Ventilation Roofs in the Suncheon Songgwangsa Temple (순천 송광사 요사채의 환기지붕 설치 시기에 관한 연구)

  • Suncheon Songgwangsa has unique ventilation roofs. In the meantime, these roofs have been known as a characteristic element of Songgwangsa architecture and a unique element of Korean traditional architecture. I would like to review the installation time of the ventilation roof and check the installation time through Songgwangsa's records and photographs. According to the results of this study, it was confirmed that the ventilation roofs installed in various buildings including the temple of Songgwangsa were installed between the 1920s and 1930s. This can be summarized by comparing the history of Songgwangsa and the history of each building of Songgwangsa by comparing the paintings of Songgwangsa in 1886 and 1915 with the photographs of 1920s and Songgwangsa in the 1930s. It is a matter of further study whether the installation of the ventilation roof of Songgwangsa Temple is influenced by the Japanese occupation period.

  • Kurye-gun, which Hwaeomsa temple is located, has huge scale's geographical characteristics, such as mountains, rivers and open fields. This is really blessing area because of Som-jin river at the bottom of Ghiri mountain and open fields, which this situation is very difficult. The location of Hwaeomsa temple is an end of The Baek-Doo Mountains and very important spot(where influences to its geometric converge) of the theory of feng-shui. On exposure logic of the Korean traditional theory of feng-shui, the organization in Ga-Ram of Hwaeomsa temple is inconsistent with representative theory and analyzing system. So, this is one of successful examples with the theory of feng-shui because exhalation from the earth and water was organized well with accuracy.

Cultural Landscape Analysis of Changbai Mountain as Sacrifice Space (제사공간으로서 장백산의 문화경관적 해석)

  • This study looked at the sacrifice space building in the Changbai Mountain area to a specific era in terms of the cultural landscape. The scared of Changbai Mountain how changes in history came despite the regime and national change, interpretation of the reason was the scared maintained. The results of this study are as follows. First, Replacement of the regime in the Republic of China in the Qing period, ethnic diversity, underwent a cultural acceptance. So Changbai Mountain nature of sacrifice, the divine subject has formed the changes. Second, the Qing Royal sacrifice space Wangji Temple(望祭殿) have formed a unique cultural space and the sacrifice of authoritative content with only space. The Republic of China period, a new folk beliefs were born between the defense in the face of the Han Chinese migration and settlement process. Build Sacrifice space of Rulai Temple(如來寺) and Shanshenlaobatou Temple(山神老把頭廟). Third, the spatial relationship between the priest and the Changbai Mountain area Wangji Temple(望祭殿) is the power of space as vertical space. Rulai Temple(如來寺), Shanshenlaobatou Temple(山神老把頭廟) is located in the Changbai Mountain and horizontal space was obedient to the space. Fourth, the sacrifice ritual Wangji Temple(望祭殿) of the Qing Dynasty is the only ritual sacrifice of satisfaction. It is cut off depending on the abolition of imperial power. Currently, public ritual sacrifice is commonplace rituals and sacrifices of the Qing Dynasty is only formally underway. In conclusion, as it has been maintained for the sanctity historically Changbai Mountain. Changbai Mountain sacrifice space was changing through the acceptance of the replacement of the regime and culture of ethnic offerings from a single culture of the Qing Dynasty. Currently, to form a sacrifice space and culture overlap through a mutually acceptable.
