  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and confirm the effectiveness of two teacher-centered instruction methods in the context of linear functions: one with emphasis on mathematical thinking processes as an alternative to the more traditional method without such emphasis. The level of achievement of students under the teacher-centered instruction with explicit emphasis on mathematical thinking processes is consistently higher than that of students receiving the more traditional teacher-centered instruction. The alternative instruction method in the current study is expected to encourage and prompt students to better grasp and understand mathematical concepts, principles, as well as problem solving strategies. In contrast to other alternatives, the method offers the advantage of being readily incorporated into the actual teaching practices in the classroom, as the traditional frame of teacher-centered pedagogy familiar to teachers remains in tact.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the effect of molecular movement model based instruction on high school students' conceptions of diffusion and osmosis. The study was composed of two groups, the traditional instruction group in which the so-called traditional instruction was performed, and the other group in which interventions by researchers were made. The subjects of the traditional instruction group consisted of a total of 242 high school students from Seoul, Gwangju and Mokpo. The subjects of the model based instruction group consisted of 177 first-year high school students in Mokpo. The study was focused on the use of the term of 'molecular movement' in their explanation of diffusion and osmosis in the correct contexts. In general, students who got the molecular movement model based instruction showed more frequent use of the terms of 'molecular movement' in the correct contexts than the control group students did. It was found that misconceptions including teleological explanations changed into scientific explanations by the intervention. It seemed that the molecular movement model led students to make scientific explanations on natural phenomena. A further research is recommended to assess the improvement of teleological explanation and scientific attitude by the molecular movement model.

  • This study intends to investigate the features and the difference between traditional instruction and flipped learning through a comparative analysis of verbal interaction on those learning method. The videos of traditional instruction and flipped learning of 5th graders social class were recorded and transcribed, which were analyzed in Flanders verbal interaction model. The results were as follows: First, the flipped learning is composed of students' learning activity and a teacher's statement properly, while the traditional instruction consists of a teacher's statement mostly. Second, the traditional instruction tends to be directive classes that full of dominant, despotic, restrictive communication of teacher oriented. In contrast, the flipped learning is inclined to be nondirective with integrated, democratic, comprehensive, permissive communication of students oriented. Third, the flipped learning emphasizes students' activities and statement and reduces delivery of knowledge, meanwhile, the traditional instruction stresses delivery of content that the teacher centrally located. Lastly, the type of verbal interaction in traditional instruction is a one-way communication, students responding simply in teacher's lectures and questions. On the other hand, in flipped learning lessons, more interactive communication occurs, teachers complimenting students and accepting their comments.

  • The purpose for this study is to check if research activities can make positive effects on inquiry instruction utilizing materials when compared to traditional instruction utilizing the textbook. The effects of the class should be measured both in cognitive domain and in affective domain. The cognitive domain was measured by the change in achievements in learning science, and the affective domain was measured by the change in learning attitudes of science. The assumptions to be verified in this study were as follows. First, achievements in learning science are higher in the learner oriented inquiry instruction utilizing materials than in the learner oriented traditional instruction utilizing the textbook. Second, learning attitudes of science are higher in the learner oriented inquiry instruction utilizing materials than in the learner oriented traditional instruction utilizing the textbook. The results of the research are as follows. In the cognitive domain, achievements in learning science showed significant change(p=.045) measured by verifying the score for the difference among the averages for each sub-scale, in 5% of meaningful probability, and were higher in the inquiry instruction utilizing materials study. In the affective domain, learning attitudes of science showed significant change(p=.019) measured by verifying the score for the difference among the averages for each sub-scale, in 5% of meaningful probability, and were higher in the inquiry instruction utilizing materials study. In learning attitudes of science, 2 items(self-conception of science, attitudes of learning science) out of 3 items(self-conception of science, attitudes of learning science, learning habits of science) showed significant changes (p=.045, p=.001). But the difference(learning-habits of science) was not significant(p=.914).

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of the method of English teaching and learning through the student-centered environmental instruction. I've been skeptical about the traditional instruction, which is composed of the teachers-centered instruction, because of the lack of creativity. Until now, I've always wished to have an alternative method that can be substituted for routine's style. To achieve it, I selected 90 students from 2 classes, in the 3rd year at a girls' high school in Chungnam as the subject of study. I divided them into two groups, the student-centered environmental instruction and the teacher-centered traditional instruction. The tools used in this study are a preliminary English achievement test, a self-directed learning attitudes test and two teaching plans. For this test, a high school text book was assigned. I have treated 20 times of the test each for two groups using two types of teaching-learning plans which I made for this purpose. To verify the hypotheses after administrating the test, I selected t-verification for post test result. Based on this test result, I could conclude that there was a significant improvement of English proficiency and a change in the self-directed learning attitudes; also the student-centered environmental instruction is more effective than teachers-centered instruction.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of multiple representations on students' understanding of fractions, decimals, and percent. The instructional approach integrating multiple representations was compared to traditional algorithmic instruction, a form of direct instruction. To examine and compare the impact of multiple representations instruction with traditional algorithmic instruction, pre and post tests consisting of five similar items were administered with 87 middle school students. Students' scores in these two tests and their problem solving processes were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative results indicated that students taught by traditional algorithmic instruction showed higher scores on the post-test than students in the multiple representations group. Furthermore, findings suggest that instruction using multiple representations does not guarantee a positive impact on students' understanding of mathematical concepts. Qualitative results suggest that the limited use of multiple representations during a class may have hindered students from applying their use in novel problem situations. Therefore, when using multiple representations, teachers should employ more diverse examples and practice with multiple representations to help students to use them without error.
