  • Structural design for shipbuilding is generally divided into three stages: the basic, detailed, and production designs, of which the production design is the most frequently revised among the three design stages. The revision involved in production design department was approximately 61% of the total 4,211 revision members and approximately 56% of the total 710 revision cases in the survey on the number of design revisions for nine ships. In this study, members and drawings with a high revision rate were investigated, and related design departments were identified. In addition, the work contents of the design department were analyzed to reduce the number of design revisions and three tasks are very frequently revised were selected. A survey was conducted with engineers engaged in the production design, after which, standards were proposed for the method of aggregating bills of materials, to employ macros to calculate the length of members and that of profile input data when reviewing drawings. Via the study, it was determined that the major causes of design revision are simple mistakes by engineers or lack of understanding on structural arrangement of basic members more than intricacies of prior design and high level specification. As a result of applying the proposed standards, it was confirmed that the design revision was reduced by approximately 40%.

  • In this paper, design algorithms for SMP(Single Mated Pair) and MMP (Multipli Mated Pair) structure of CCS (Common Channel Signaling) network are proposed through the study of the structure of CCS network. High reliability and fast messagy transfer time are the most important requirements for the CCS network. Based on it, three parameters such as monotraffic, reliability (maximum isolated SP(Signalling Point) number when any two STP(Signalling Transfer Points) fail and total network cost are defined. And the proposed algorithms different from preexisted algorithm that minimizes total network cost, maximize monotraffic with two constraints, reliability and total network cost. Comparing the experimental results of the proposed algorithms with those of the preexisted algorithm that minimizes total network cost, shows that the proposed algorithms produce a more reliable topology that has more monotraffic and a little higher total network cost. Additionaly, with the results of the proposed algorithms, SMP and MMP structures are compared.

  • The Big Bang-Big Crunch (BB-BC) optimization algorithm is developed for optimal design of non-linear steel frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column connections. The design algorithm obtains the minimum total cost which comprises total member plus connection costs by selecting suitable sections. Displacement and stress constraints together with the geometry constraints are imposed on the frame in the optimum design procedure. In addition, non-linear analyses considering the P-${\Delta}$ effects of beam-column members are performed during the optimization process. Three design examples with various types of connections are presented and the results show the efficiency of using semi-rigid connection models in comparing to rigid connections. The obtained optimum semi-rigid frames are more economical solutions and lead to more realistic predictions of response and strength of the structure.

  • Prediction of total sediment load is essential in an extensive range of problems such as the design of the dead volume of dams, design of stable channels, sediment transport in the rivers, calculation of bridge piers degradation, prediction of sand and gravel mining effects on river-bed equilibrium, determination of the environmental impacts and dredging necessities. This paper is aimed to investigate and predict the total sediment load of the Wadi Arbaat in Eastern Sudan. The study was estimated the sediment load by separate total sediment load into bedload and Suspended Load (SL), independently. Although the sediment records are not sufficient to construct the discharge-sediment yield relationship and Sediment Rating Curve (SRC), the total sediment loads were predicted based on the discharge and Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC). The turbidity data NTU in water quality has been used for prediction of the SSC in the estimation of suspended Sediment Yield (SY) transport of Wadi Arbaat. The sediment curves can be used for the estimation of the suspended SYs from the watershed area. The amount of information available for Khor Arbaat case study on sediment is poor data. However, the total sediment load is essential for the optimal control of the sediment transport on Khor Arbaat sediment and the protection of the dams on the upper gate area. The results show that the proposed model is found to be considered adequate to predict the total sediment load.

  • This paper identified the source of inspiration to cooperatively design a fashion collection from US undergraduate clothing design students and addressed how to implement team-based learning strategy to conceptual clothing design in class. Data was collected from the total of 51 students in a senior clothing design course at a large 4-year university in the US. The assigned project for this class was to develop a group collection under a same theme. Each student worked with his/her team member(s) to create an outfit and the entire class worked as a group to create a cohesive collection. The study showed that the sources of inspiration for the themes/concepts came from 11categories: historic era/old Hollywood glamour, shape/line/structure/architectural, fairy tales movies, nature/abstract, circus/mysterious, occasion/place, object, designer/artist, futuristic, culture, and various movies. To implement cooperative learning strategies in the clothing design class, a total of five class presentation/discussion sessions were held for theme/concept decision, fabric decision, design decision, test garment evaluation and design modification, and final products. Throughout the design process, team-based learning strategy promoted students' engagement and participation and inspired their critical thinking skills for making decisions within a team.

  • In this paper, design optimization for mixed-flow pump impellers and diffusers has been studied using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code and DOE (design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the mixed-flow pump by designing the impeller and diffuser. Geometric design variables were defined by the vane plane development, which indicates the blade-angle distributions and length of the impeller and diffusers. The vane plane development was controlled using the blade-angle in a fixed meridional shape. First, the design optimization of the defined impeller geometric variables was achieved, and then the flow characteristics were analyzed in the point of incidence angle at the diffuser leading edge for the optimized impeller. Next, design optimizations of the defined diffuser shape variables were performed. The importance of the geometric design variables was analyzed using $2^k$ factorial designs, and the design optimization of the geometric variables was determined using the response surface method (RSM). The objective functions were defined as the total head and the total efficiency at the design flow rate. Based on the comparison of CFD results between the optimized pump and base design models, the reason for the performance improvement was discussed.
