  • Wavelet transform technique is applied to two important electromagnetic problems:1) to analyze the frequency-domain radar echo from finite-size targets and 2) to the integral solution of two- dimensional electromagnetic scattering problems. Since the frequency- domain radar echo consists of both small-scale natural resonances and large-scale scattering center information, the multiresolution property of the wavelet transform is well suited for analyzing such ulti-scale signals. Wavelet analysis examples of backscattered data from an open- ended waveguide cavity are presented. The different scattering mechanisms are clearly resolved in the wavelet-domain representation. In the wavelet transform domain, the moment method impedance matrix becomes sparse and sparse matrix algorithms can be utilized to solve the resulting matrix equationl. Using the fast wavelet transform in conjunction with the conjugate gradient method, we present the time performance for the solution of a dihedral corner reflector. The total computational time is found to be reduced.

  • This paper describes a method of musical frequency estimation using tree structured octave band filter banks and the constant Q spectral transform. The performances of the proposed method are compared with those of the conventional constant Q transform using FFT. The performances are evaluated by the estimated fundamental frequency, varying the bandwidth and the frequency resolutions. The results are as follows. With the same frequency resolution of the conventional constant Q transform using FFT, the proposed method gives the better time resolutions, thus, the limit of the processing bandwidth is removed. And, when the bandwidth and the frequency resolution are set high for more accurate results, the computational complexity of the proposed method is less than that of the conventional one.

  • Instantaneous Frequency(IF) of Doppler signals is used to get the information of relative velocity and miss distance between a missile and the corresponding target. Though Short-Time Fourier Transform(STFT) is mainly used to estimate IF, it has many errors in wide band signals where frequency changes sharply. Because it has a fixed window in time and frequency axes. This paper deals with IF estimation of Doppler signal using a Continuous Wavelet Transform(CWT) which has adaptive window in time and frequency axes. The proposed method is able to estimate IF regardless of frequency changes because it has a narrow window in high frequency band and a wide window in low frequency band. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms STFT in estimating IF.

  • Recently the subject of "wavelet analysis" has be drawn by both mathematical and engineering application fields such as Signal Processing, Compression/Decomposition, Wavelet-Neural Network, Statistics and etc. Even though its similar to Fourier analysis, wavelet is a versatile tool with much mathematical content and great potential for applications. Especially, wavelet transform uses localizable various mother wavelet functions in time-frequency domain. Therefore, wavelet transform has good time-analysis ability for high frequency component, and has good frequency-analysis ability for low frequency component. Using the discriminative ability is more easy method than other conventional techniques. In this paper, Morlet wavelet transform was applied to discriminate the kind of line fault by acquired data from real power transformation network. The experimental result presented that Morlet wavelet transform is easier, and more useful method than the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT).

  • In this paper, we have evaluated and analyzed OTFS(Orthogonal Time Frequency Space) modulation and OTFS-MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) system. OTFS modulation can concisely compensate delay-Doppler spreading effect by using 2D(2-Dimension) iDFT (inverse Discrete Fourier Transform) and DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) operation. It enables OTFS system to transmit high-speed data. Especially, OTFS-MIMO system can transmit all data streams without performance degradation on high Doppler frequency channel. As simulation results, we have confirmed that $1{\times}1$ OTFS system's achievable rate is a similar to each stream of $2{\times}2$ OTFS-MIMO system. That is, we have also confirmed that $2{\times}2$ MIMO system can completely achieve double achievable rate in comparison with OTFS system on high Doppler frequency channel.

  • In this paper, the different frequency component and time informations from an EMI signal are extracted simultaneously using a wavelet transform and the results of transform in the time and frequency domain are analyzed. Frequencies are extracted from the EMI signal by performing the multiresolution analysis using the Daubechies-4 filter coefficients and the time information through the results of wavelet transform. We have tried the correlation analysis to evaluate the results of wavelet transform. We have chosen the optimal wavelet function for an object signal by comparing the transformed results of various wavelet functions and verified the simulation examples of waveform and harmonic analysis using a wavelet transform. We have proved the denoising effect to the EMI signal using the soft thresholding technique.

  • Although there have been many investigations employing the continuous wavelet transform for the analysis of dispersive waves, they seem to lack theoretical justifications for the effectiveness of the continuous wavelet transform over other time-frequency analysis tools such as the short-time Fourier transform. The goal of this paper is to answer this question by investigating theoretically the performance of the continuous wavelet transform and the short-time Fourier transform in tracing rapidly time-varying flexural waves. As a specific example, the performance of the two transforms is compared in a problem dealing with flexural waves generated by an impact in a solid circular cylinder.

  • The continuous Gabor wavelet transform (GWT) has been utilized as a useful time-frequency analysis tool to identify the rapidly-varying characteristics of some wave signals. In the application of GWT, it is important to select the Gabor wavelet with the optimal shape factor by which the time-frequency distribution of a signal can be accurately estimated. To find the signal-dependent optimal Gabor wavelet shape factor, the notion of the Shannon entropy which mesures the extent of signal energy concentration in the time-frequency plane is employed. To verify the validity of the present entropy-based scheme, we have applied it to the time-frequency analysis of a set of elastic bending wave signals generated by an impact in a solid cylinder.

  • The underlying ground state of a railway plays a significant role in maintaining the integrity of the overlying concrete slab and ultimately supporting the train load. While effective nondestructive tests have been used to evaluate the rail track system, they can only be performed during non-operating time due to the stress wave generated by active sources. In this study, finite element numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the feasibility of detecting unfavorable substructure conditions by using a moving train load. First, a train load module is developed by converting the train load into time-variant equivalent forces. The moving forces based on the shape functions are applied at the nodes. A parametric study that takes into account the bonding state and the train class is then performed. All the synthetic signals obtained from numerical simulations are analyzed at the frequency domain using a Fast Fourier transform (FFT) and at the time-frequency domain using a Short-Time Fourier transform (STFT). The presence of a void condition amplifies the acceleration amplitude and the vibration response. This study confirms the feasibility of using a moving train load to systematically evaluate a rail track system.

  • This paper presents the approach involving fault detection and diagnosis of gears using pattern recognition and Wavelet transform. It describes result of the comparison between KDI (Kullback Discrimination Information) with the nearest neighbor classification rule as one of pattern recognition methods and Wavelet transform to know a way to detect and diagnosis of gear damages experimentally. To model the damages 1) Normal (no defect), 2) one tooth is worn out, 3) All teeth faces are worn out 4) One tooth is broken. The vibration sensor was attached on the bearing housing. This produced the total time history data that is 20 pieces of each condition. We chose the standard data and measure distance between standard and tested data. In Wavelet transform analysis method, the time series data of magnitude in specified frequency (rotary and mesh frequency) were earned. As a result, the monitoring system using Wavelet transform method and KDI with nearest neighbor classification rule successfully detected and classified the damages from the experimental data.
