  • Soils exhibit creep behavior in which deformation and movement proceed under a state of constant stress or load. In Korea, weathered soil is abundant and occupies around one-third of the country. Weathered soil is visually described as a sandy or gravelley soil, but the behavior is quite different from the behavior of usual sand and gravel. In particular, the permeability of weathered soil is similar to sand, but the durability of settlement is similar to clay. Therefore analysis of time-dependent behavior of weathered soil is very important. In this study, Creep tests with weathered soils were carried out under constant principal stress differences of various stress levels which were experimentally obtained by triaxial compression test. The results of these tests showed the creep behavior for which the deformation increased with time, and the results are consistent with phenomenological model by creep equation of Singh-Mitchell.

  • Impulse buying has been considered a pervasive and distinctive phenomenon in the modern lifestyle and has been receiving increasing attention from consumer researchers and theorists. In the modern marketplace, spontaneous urges to buy and consume often compete with the practical necessity to delay the immediate gratification that purchasing provides. The purpose of this study is to conceptualize and test the framework of impulse buying behavior for fashion products using structural equation model. Data were obtained from 413 students attending universities during schedules classes in Busan. Analysis of the data, utilizing AMOS 4.1, supported most of the predictions. The results showed that situational variable(time available) and individual variable(fashion involvement) have direct effects on consumers' shopping emotions, including positive and negative emotion. Positive emotions had effects on all types of impulse buying(planned impulse buying, reminded impulse buying, and fashion-oriented impulse buying), while negative emotion affected two types of impulse buying(reminded impulse buying and fashion-oriented impulse buying). These emotional experiences influence impulse buying behaviors for fashion products serving as critical mediators. The findings suggest that time available and fashion involvement are good predictors mediated by shopping emotion to impulse buying behavior for fashion products. The implications of this research for future work on the shopping emotion and impulse buying behavior are discussed.

  • Background: In their first days of life, dairy calves in artificial rearing systems often have difficulty using an artificial teat for feeding. Methods: We examined the age at which calves are able to stand up voluntarily and suckle as well as their suckling behavior when presented with a plain dry teat versus a dry teat modified with a presumably attractive odor or taste substance. Single-housed newborn dairy calves (n = 51) were presented for ten consecutive days with a two-minute two-choice test, in which suckling time was recorded for 1) a plain (control) teat versus a glucose-coated teat (taste test) and 2) a plain teat versus a teat with a "Freshly Cut Grass" odor (odor test). Results: On average, the calves were able to stand up voluntarily and suckle from the second or third day of age on. The "Freshly Cut Grass" odor had no significant effect on their suckling behavior. In contrast, the calves showed a significant preference for suckling the glucose-coated teat and displayed a significantly longer total suckling time in the taste test compared to the odor test. There were no significant differences between sexes regarding suckling behavior. Conclusion: The results of the present study show that glucose had a significant effect on the calves' teat preference and significantly increased total suckling time with a dry artificial teat. As such, glucose may increase suckling motivation in non-efficient drinkers or ill calves with low motivation to suckle.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine and test treatment-seeking behavior type and decisional factors of the cancer patients after first detecting symptoms. This study used the methodological triangulation. In the first, treatment-seeking behavior type and decisional factor were described based on qualitative data collected from in-depth interviews with 29 cancer patients. Next, they were tested using quantitative data collected from a structured questionnaire involving 165 cancer patients with statistical method. As a result, treatment-seeking behavior from detecting symptoms to visiting a doctor categorized into immediate visit and delayed visit. The decisional factors on time interval between detecting symptoms and visiting a doctor was influenced by the perceived seriousness of symptoms, the experiences of visiting a doctor previously with similar symptoms, social-group influences on visiting a doctor, barriers to visiting a doctor, and health concerns. There were significant relationship between treatment-seeking time and these factors, however, there was no statistically significant relationship between treatment-seeking time and the demographic characteristics. It is expected that results of this study can be used for nursing education data of cancer patients for early diagnosis after detecting symptoms

  • This study aimed to explore how the Korean university students' reading motivation is related to their English (L2) reading behavior. The construct of the students' Korean (L1) and L2 reading motivation was investigated with the data obtained through the questionnaire from 120 sophomore students. A factor analysis was conducted to extract the major factors of motivation and determine the interrelationship among items in the questionnaire. As a result, 6 factors were extracted: Intrinsic Motivation for English Reading, Extrinsic Motivation 1 (Immediate Goal Orientedness), Extrinsic Motivation 2 (Integrative Orientation), Importance of L1 Reading, Intrinsic Motivation toward L1 reading, and Importance of L2 Reading Skill. The interrelatedness between the assessment results on the L2 reading behavior (reading amount, time and speed) and motivation factors was measured by correlation coefficients. It was found that Intrinsic Motivation toward English Reading was significantly related to the students' reading amount and Intrinsic Motivation toward Korean Reading had positive association with the students' reading time with statistical significance. Other factors did not show significant correlation with the students' reading behavior. In addition, the students' reading speed was significantly related to their reading amount as well, while reading time did not affect the speed gain.

  • This study investigated difference of general eating habit and eating-out behavior between men and women of university students in Gyonggi area. The survey was conducted from 1 March to 1 April 2010, in Gyeonggi area. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 250 students in Gyeonggi area. The research results show, first of all, that they eat twice a day, and they usually do not eat breakfast. The main reason why they do not eat breakfast is that they do not have enough time to eat. Between men and women, there is significant difference in eating amount and eating speed at 0.001 levels. Men's problems of eating behavior are irregular meal time and speed of eating time, and in case of women, they do not have a meal regularly and overeat at one time. Second, they usually eat out for a meal and gather with friends once to three times a week. Also, the lunch set-menu promotion is the most preferred one. Third, when men choose a restaurant, they consider in order of taste, convenience, amount, and service; women consider in order of atmosphere, taste, convenience, and service. Taste is the most important for men; atmosphere is the most important consideration for women. Taste (at 0.01 levels), sanitation (at 0.05 levels), and atmosphere (at 0.001 levels) are significantly different between men and women in choosing restaurant.

  • The appropriate description of the stress-anisotropy and time-dependent behavior of cohesive soils is very important in representing the real soil behavior. In this study, two constitutive relations have been incorporated based on the generalized viscous theory: one is the plastic constitutive relation adopted to capture the stress-anisotropy with a few model parameters; the other is the rate-dependent constitutive relation adopted to describe the strain rate-dependent behavior, an important time-dependent behavior in cohesive soils. The incorporated and proposed constitutive model has relatively a few model parameters and their values need not to be re-evaluated at different strain rates. The proposed model has been verified and investigated with the anisotropic triaxial test results obtained by using the artificial homogeneous specimens.

  • This study is a method for evaluating and quantifying driver's dangerous driving behavior. The quantification method calculates various driving information in real time after starting the vehicle operation such as the time that the vehicle has been continuously driven without a break, overspeed, rapid acceleration, and overspeed driving time. These quantified risk of driving behavior values can be individually provided as a safe driving index, or can be used to objectify the evaluation of a group of drivers on roads, or vehicle groups such as cargo/bus/passenger vehicles.

  • This paper introduces a numerical analysis model capable of evaluating CFT (Concrete-Filled Tube) columns across all time stages, incorporating creep behavior analysis and inelastic analysis to account for time-dependent behavior. The proposed model is compared with experimental results, revealing that the numerical model presented in this paper demonstrates more accurate trends than existing design criteria. Following verification, a numerical analysis is conducted for each slenderness ratio, determining the ultimate load capacity and examining the short-term and long-term sustained load behavior of the overall CFT column members.
