The purposes of present work are to analyze the convective heat transfer with three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis, and to optimize shape of the mixing vane using the analysis results. Response surface method is employed as an optimization technique. The objective function is defined as a combination of inverse of heat transfer rate and friction loss. Two bend angles of mixing vane are selected as design variables. Thermal-hydraulic performances have been discussed and optimum shape has been obtained as a function of weighting factor in the objective function. The results show that the optimized geometry improves the heat transfer performance far downstream of the mixing vane.

Response surface method is employed as an optimization technique. The objective function is defined as a combination of heat transfer rate and inverse of pressure drop. Thermal-hydraulic performances have been discussed and optimum shape has been obtained as a function of weighting factor in the objective function. The results show that the optimized geometry improves the heat transfer performance far downstream of the mixing vane.
The mixing characteristics of a multiple transverse injection system in a scramjet combustor were studied with numerical methods. The distance among injectors on mixing characteristics were investigated. The three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations including k-w SST turbulence model were solved. It was shown that the mixing characteristics of a multiple transverse injection system were very different from those of a single and a dual injection system; the rear injection flow was strongly influenced by blocking effect due to the momentum flux of the front injection flow and thus had higher expansion and penetration than the front injection flow. The multiple injection system had higher mixing rate, higher penetration but had more losses of stagnation pressure than the single injection system.
In this study, a steady three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow within a torque converter was numerically analyzed with the introduction of interrow mixing model. Mixing planes were introduced to exchange the flow informations between two adjacent elements of the torque converter. The mixing planes were installed among three elements of the torque converter. Therefore, in the present method, it could be possible to calculate the flow-filed within the torque converter without any assumption of circulating flow rates or any extension of boundaries toward the upstream and the downstream for each element. The numerically calculated performances of the torque converter were in good agreement with experimental results, and the complex flow patterns were be observed according to design and off-design condition. As a conclusion, it was found that the present numerical method was very effective in the steady flow analysis of torque converters.

A common feature in the three-dimensional numerical model experiments of coastal discharge with simplified model and idealized external forcings is investigated. The velocity fields due to the buoyancy and flaw flux, are spreaded radiately and the surface velocites are much greater than the homegeneous discharges. The coastal dischargd due to the Coriolis force and flaw flux are shaped a anticyclical gyre (clockwise) and determined the scale of the gyre in the coastal zone, respectively. The bottom topography restricts a outward extention of the coastal fronts and it accelerates a southward flow.
This study aims at numerically and experimentally investigating torsional guided wave mixing with weak material nonlinearity under acoustoelastic effect in tubular structures. The acoustoelastic effect on single central frequency guided wave propagation in structures has been well-established. However, the acoustoelastic on guided wave mixing has not been fully explored. This study employs a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model to simulate the effect of stress on guided wave mixing in tubular structures. The nonlinear strain energy function and theory of incremental deformation are implemented in the 3D FE model to simulate the guided wave mixing with weak material nonlinearity under acoustoelastic effect. Experiments are carried out to measure the nonlinear features, such as combinational harmonics and second harmonics in related to different levels of applied stresses. The experimental results are compared with the 3D FE simulation. The results show that the generation combinational harmonic at sum frequency provides valuable stress information for tubular structures, and also useful for damage diagnosis. The findings of this study provide physical insights into the effect of applied stresses on the combinational harmonic generation due to wave mixing. The results are important for applying the guided wave mixing for in-situ monitoring of structures, which are subjected to different levels of loadings under operational condition.
This study was conducted for obtaining the optimized data to build the mixer or micro fluid device as measuring the three dimensions flow field in micro mixer. To acquire the rapid diffusion on the region of low Reynolds (Re < 100), the staggered herringbone mixer using chaotic advection was selected in this case. At first, by conducting the numerical analytical virtual experiment using CFD-ACE+, three dimensions flow field in the micro mixer was estimated As this flow field was proven using defocusing particle tracing method, the behavior of micro flow with three dimensional aspects could be analyzed. Numerical analysis and flow pattern in the micro mixer by experimental verification made to be able to analyze the chaotic advection. These can be important sources for building more optimized form. Verifying the information of three dimensional flow structure, these information can be used as the data for developing and improving the $\mu$ -TAS.
The mixing characteristics of pylon injection in a Scramjet combustor and effects of film cooling to protect pylon from air-heating. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model were used. Fuel hydrogen and air were considered as coolants. There were remarkable improvements of penetration and mixing rate with the pylon injection. There also over-heating on the front surface of pylon without film cooling. The coolant injected parallel to the front surface of the pylon protect the pylon from over-heating.
Fluid flows within microchannels are characterized by low Reynolds numbers. Therefore the effect of mixing is a crucial factor in design of the channels. Since the action of the electro-osmotic or magnetic forces used in the mixing enhancement is usually periodic in the three-dimensional channel configuration, use of the various concepts of chaotic advection is reasonable in the quantification of the stirring effect. In this paper, the details of the method of material-stretching mapping is explained. The actual application of the method to the screw extruder is also presented.
To investigate the flow related to the mixing, micro PIV measurements were performed in the middle plane of the channel. A passive micro mixer analyzed in this work has been designed in the shape of a three-dimensional microchannel and fabricated with PDMS molding process by KAIST. The mixing performance was evaluated for different flow rates using phenolphthalein and sodium hydroxide solutions. Results show that mixing is enhanced by the increase of flow rate, which yields stronger secondary flows with helical streamlines.
