  • A LabVIEW program has been developed together with simple infrared thermography(IRT) system to control the lock-in conditions of the system efficiently. The IR imaging software was designed to operate both of infrared camera and halogen lamp by synchronizing them with periodic sine signal based on thyristor(SCR) circuits. LabVIEW software was programmed to provide users with screen-menu functions by which it can change the period and energy of heat source, operate the camera to acquire image, and monitor the state of the system on the computer screen. In experiment, lock-in IR image for a specimen with artificial hole defects was obtained by the developed IRT system and compared with optical image.

  • The applicability of UPT (Ultrasound Pulse Thermography) for real-time defect detection of the ceramic heating plate is described. The ceramic heating plate with superior insulation and high radiation is used to control the water temperature in underwater environment. The underwater temperature control system can be damaged owing to the short circuit, which resulted from the defect of the ceramic heating plate. A high power ultrasonic energy with pulse duration of 280 ms was injected into the ceramic heating plate in the vertical direction. The ultrasound excited vibration energy sent into the component propagate inside the sample until they were converted to the heat in the vicinity of the defect. Therefore, an injection of the ultrasound pulse wave which results in heat generation, turns the defect into a local thermal wave transmitter. Its local emission is monitored and recorded via the thermal infrared camera at the surface which is processed by image recording system. Measurements were Performed on 4 kinds of samples, composed of 3 intact plates and the defect plate. The observed thermal image revealed two area of crack in the defective ceramic heating plate.

  • Three types of samples with defects were measured by lock-in med-IR (infrared) thermography with various lock-in frequencies for different materials. The lock-in method can be used to detect defects when an external energy source is applied to the object, the non-uniformity of the incident thermal energy distribution is eliminated, and the camera's measurement cycle is synchronized with the load cycle of the incident energy source. For inspecting samples with defects, results of thermal images are analyzed when three types of materials, i.e., SM45C, STS316L, and AL6061 are tested and three lock-in frequencies, i.e., 0.08, 0.1, and 0.12 Hz are applied. In this study, the optimal lock-in frequencies were determined by comparing the results of each material and lock-in frequency measured using the mid-IR camera.

  • The climate of the earth is expected to change rapidly and continuously. Despite climate change is expected to impact on productivity of crop and livestock, a study for adaptation and impact of livestock to global warming is not enough. This study was performed to develop a method to evaluate the effects of heat stress on dairy cattle. Feedlot environment and health status of livestock were measured through an infrared thermography camera and a temperature-humidity sensor. Environmental factors such as temperature and humidity were measured to calculate the Temperature humidity index (THI). The change of the milk yield was similar to THI data pattern, suggesting that THI might play an important role to predict the effect of climate change on dairy cattle. THI data would be useful to predict long-term climate change effects on dairy cattle with RCP8.5 scenario.

  • This study was researched for use by data for the improvement of ventilation system of optimum environmental control systems. The ventilation system for windowless swine housing was installed negative pressure system that circular pipe duct for inlet was installed on the ceiling and axial flow fan for exhaust was installed on the sidewall. The temperatures in the pen was measured using infrared thermography camera and thermocouple with data-logger. The temperature measurement points was selected by infrared thermography camera is alley (G), inlet (A), front-upper (B), front-lower (C), rear-upper (D), rear-lower (E), forward fan (F). The temperature measured at those selected points for temperature distribution was $28^{\circ}C$ that was maintained setting temperature in suitably. The temperature deviations of F point and A~E points in windowless swine housing was less then average $0.5^{\circ}C$. The result of air velocity of measured points was suitable to the breeding of pigs.

  • In this paper, the concept of infrared thermography(IRT), the principle of measurement of IRT and how to set up the IR camera for the nondestructive testing are described in detail. Also, its utilization and non-destructive testing(NDT) diagnosis are reviewed. By performing the periodic non-touched WDT through the estimation of thermal patterns related with the temperature for the surface targeted, IRT can be applied to the early prevention of the device failure. For the diagnosis utilization, thermal imaging patterns obtained from IRT for heated blocks with internal defects were estimated through the lion-destructive method and discussed the way of IRT estimation from the analysis of characteristics between material defects and thermal imaging patterns.

  • This paper proposes a thermography-based coating thickness estimation method for steel structures using model-agnostic meta-learning. In the proposed method, a halogen lamp generates heat energy on the coating surface of a steel structure, and the resulting heat responses are measured using an infrared (IR) camera. The measured heat responses are then analyzed using model-agnostic meta-learning to estimate the coating thickness, which is visualized throughout the inspection surface of the steel structure. Current coating thickness estimation methods rely on point measurement and their inspection area is limited to a single point, whereas the proposed method can inspect a larger area with higher accuracy. In contrast to previous ANN-based methods, which require a large amount of data for training and validation, the proposed method can estimate the coating thickness using only 10- pixel points for each material. In addition, the proposed model has broader applicability than previous methods, allowing it to be applied to various materials after meta-training. The performance of the proposed method was validated using laboratory-scale and field tests with different coating materials; the results demonstrated that the error of the proposed method was less than 5% when estimating coating thicknesses ranging from 40 to 500 ㎛.

  • This paper proposes a noncontact thermography technique for fatigue crack evaluation under a cyclic tensile loading. The proposed technique identifies and localizes an invisible fatigue crack without scanning, thus making it possible to instantaneously evaluate an incipient fatigue crack. Based on a thermoelastic theory, a new fatigue crack evaluation algorithm is proposed for the fatigue crack-tip localization. The performance of the proposed algorithm is experimentally validated. To achieve this, the cyclic tensile loading is applied to a dog-bone shape aluminum specimen using a universal testing machine, and the corresponding thermal responses induced by thermoelastic effects are captured by an infrared camera. The test results confirm that the fatigue crack is well identified and localized by comparing with its microscopic images.

  • Heat transfer characteristic near a sharp fin in a supersonic flow was studied. Infra-red thermography was used to obtain the variation of surface heat transfer coefficient distribution. The attack angle of fin is ranged from $10^{\circ}\;to\;20^{\circ}$ and the oil flow method was also conducted to understand a flow field near a sharp fin.
