In producing cordierite glass-ceramics by sintering, following experiments were conducted in order to determine the optimum heat-treatment schedule for high-crystallinity and dense sintered body. The glass composition of 11.67MgO-29.46Al2O3-52.88SiO2-5P2O5-1B2O3 (wt%) was selected on the basis of the early experiment. The 3-step heat treatment schedule was determined by the results of DTA, Dilatometric measurement and high-temperature XRD, where the particle-size-controlled glass powder was used. The degree of densification and the crystallinity were evaluated by the measurement of the bulk density and X-ray scattering intensity. The specimen fired with the optimum conditions showed ${\alpha}$-cordierite phase, relative density ∼98%, crystallinity ∼92%, thermal expansion coefficient ∼30${\times}$10-7/$^{\circ}C$, dielectric constant ∼5.5 and resistivity ∼1.0${\times}$1012 {{{{ OMEGA }}cm, respectively.
Al2O3/SiC hybrid-composite has been fabricated by the conventional powder process. The addition of $\alpha$-Al2O3 as seed particles in the transformation of ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 to $\alpha$-Al2O3 provided a homogeneity of the microstructure. The grain growth of Al2O3 are significantly surpressed by the addition of nano-size SiC particles. Dislocation were produced due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between Al2O3 and SiC and piled up on SiC particles in Al2O3 matrix, resulting in transgranular fracture. The high fracture strength of the composite was contributed to the grain refinement and the transgranular fracture mode. The addition of SiC platelets to Al2O3/SiC nano-composite decreased the fracture strength, but increased the fracture toughness. Coated SiC platelets with nitrides such as BN and Si3N4 enhanced fracture toughness much more than non-coated SiC platelets by enhancing crack deflection.

Alpha-phase alumina TGO(Thermally Grown Oxide) forms on the interface between zirconia top coat and bond coat of thermal barrier coating system for superalloys during exposure to high temperature over $1000^{\circ}C$. It is known to provide a good protection against hot corrosion and to cause surface failure such as rumpling and cracking due to difference in thermal expansion coefficient from the substrate metal and the lateral growth. Consequently, mechanical properties of the alumina TGO at the high temperature are the key parameters determining the integrity of TBC system. In this work, by using Fecralloy foils as the alumina forming substrate, creep tests and tensile tests have been performed with various TGO thicknesses$(h=0{\sim}4{\mu}m)$ and yttrium contents(0, 200ppm) at $1200^{\circ}C$. Displacement-time curves and load-displacement curves for each TGO thickness(h=1,2,..) were measured from the creep and tensile tests, respectively, and compared with the curves without TGO thickness(h=0). As the result, the intrinsic tensile and creep properties of TGO itself were determined.

In this study we investigated the effects of process variables on the bond strength, and its dependency upon the interfacial chemistry when the joined $ZrO_2$ toughened $Na\beta$"-alumina to $\alpha$-alumina using B$_2$$O_3$-$SiO_2$-Al$_2$$O_3$-CaO glass sealant. We observed that bond strength is mainly determined by the strength of the glass, which, in turn, depends on the glass composition established after joining reaction. Joining at $950^{\circ}C$ for 15min yielded the highest average bond strength of 66MPa. Different types of interfacial reaction seem to occur at each interface. After joining at $950^{\circ}C$ for 15min we found that Ca and Si diffuse much deeper(~15$\mu\textrm{m}$) into the $\beta$"-alumina composite than into the $\alpha$-alumina(<1$\mu\textrm{m}$) as a result of ion exchange reaction and more effective grain boundary diffusion. Thermal expansion coefficient of the glass was found to have changed more closely to those of the $\beta$"-alumina composite and $\alpha$-alumina, which put the glass under a slight compressive stress.ressive stress.
Effective glass frit compositions enabled to absorb laser energy, and to seal a commercial dye-sensitized solar-cell-panel substrate were developed by using $V_2O_5$-based glasses with various amounts of $TeO_2$ substitution. The latter was intended to increase the lifetime of the solar cells. Substitution of $V_2O_5$ by $TeO_2$ provided a strong network structure for the glasses via the formation of tetrahedral pyramids in the glass, and changed the various glass properties, such as glass transition temperature ($T_g$), dilatometric softening point ($T_d$), crystallization temperature, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and glass flowage without any detrimental effect on the laser absorption property of the glasses. The thermal expansion mismatch (${\Delta}{\alpha}$) between the glass frit and the substrate could be controlled within less than ${\pm}5%$ by addition of 10 wt% of ${\beta}$-eucryptite. An 810 nm diode laser was used for the sealing test. The laser sealing test revealed that the VZBT20 glass frit with 10 wt% ${\beta}$-eucryptite was successfully sealed the substrates without interfacial cracks and pores. The optimum sealing conditions were provided by a beam size of 3 mm, laser power of 40 watt, scan speed of 300 mm/s, and 200 irradiation cycles.
Glasses in the $Bi_{2}O_3-SiO_2-ZnO$ glasses system were examined as a potential replacement for lead-oxide glass frits with low firing temperature ($500\sim600^{\circ}C$) for the dielectric layer of a plasma display panel (PDP). The glasses were evaluated for glass transition temperature($T_{g}$) and thermal expansion coefficient(${\alpha}$). After forming transparent thick films by a screen-printing method, it was evaluated for the optical properties. The transmittance of thick films fired at $500-600^{\circ}C$ showed above $80\%$, which was not dependent on the firing temperature. As a result, many pores were observed at samples fired at low temperature, while the number of pores from samples prepared at high temperature decreased and the pores size increased.
The mechanical and electrical properties of hot-pressed and annelaed $\beta$-SiC+39vol.% $ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as a function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6:4 wt%). In this microstructures, no reactions and elongated $\alpha$-SiC grains with equiaxed $ZrB_2$ grains were observed between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$. The properties of the $\beta$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ composites with 4wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ at R.T. are as follows: fracture toughness is 6.37 MPa.m1/2, electical resistivity is $1.51\times10^{-4}\Omega \cdot\textrm{cm}$ and the relative density is 98.6% of the theoretical density. The fracture toughness of the $\beta$-SiC+39 vol.% $ZrB_2$ composites were weakly decreased with increasing amount of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives. Internal stresses due to the difference of $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ thermal expansion coefficient and elastic modulus mismatch appeared to contribute to fracture toughening in $\beta$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites.
A low melting borosilicate glass frit was used as an adhesion promoter, which enables $MnWO_4$to be sintered with in a reasonable sintering temperature range ($800∼1000^{\circ}C$). The glass was evaluated for glass transition temperature ($Τ_{g}$ X) and thermal expansion coefficient($\alpha$). Mechanical property (Vickers hardness), grain growth, the comparison of lattice parameter and pore distribution of sintered $MnWO_4$ with the frit were methodically discussed. As sintering temperature increased, a typical liquid phase sintering showed the rapid grain growth and high densification of X$MnWO_4$grain, improvement of hardness (until $920^{\circ}C$) and different pore size distribution. Resistance of sintered $MnWO_4$varied from 450k$\Omega$ to 8.8M$\Omega$ under the measuring humidify ranging from 30 to 90%. Thus, the results will contribute to the application of glass frit containing sensor materials and their future use.
We have investigated the growth characteristics of thick GaN on Sim substrate with AlN and low temperature GaN buffer layer. The vertical hydride vapor phase epitaxy system with $GaCl_3$ precursor was used for growth of GaN. AlN and GaN buffer layer were deposited on Si substrate to reduce the lattice mismatch and the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between si and GaN. Optimization of deposition condition for AlN and low temperature GaN buffer layers were carried out. We studied the effects of growth temperature, V/III ratio on the properties of thick GaN. Surface morphology, growth rate and crystallinity of thick GaN were measured using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), $\alpha-step$-, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffractometer(XRD).
To get a better understanding of the effect of physicochemical properties and microstructure on $SO_2$ absorption behavior of DESs with different molar ratios of EmimCl and EG (from 2:1 to 1:2), densities (${\rho}$), viscosities (${\eta}$), speeds of sound (u), refractive indices ($n_D$), and thermal decomposition temperatures ($T_d$) of EmimCl-EG DESs were measured and used to obtain the other derived properties, such as thermal expansion coefficient (${\alpha}_p$) and activation energy for viscous flow ($E_{\eta}$). Moreover, FT-IR spectra and in situ variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy were employed to study the microstructures of DESs. Based on physicochemical and spectroscopic properties, the influence of the concentrations of EmimCl on the interactions in DESs was explored to be associated with their $SO_2$ absorption behavior. The results show that the interactions between $Emim^+$ and $Cl^-$ of EmimCl is gradually weakening with increasing the concentration of EG in DESs by forming of hydrogen bond interaction of $O-H{\cdots}Cl^-$, resulting in a decrease of ${\rho}$, ${\eta}$, u, $n_D$, and $T_d$ of DESs, and hindering the charge-transfer interaction of $SO_2$ with $Cl^-$ and deceasing $SO_2$ capture capacity. Moreover, the $SO_2$ absorption capacity of DESs is proportional to their ${\rho}$ and $E_{\eta}$, respectively.
