  • Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in Korea. Because of their sequelae, strokes are categorized as a sudden-onset, constant course chronic illness which needs continuous efforts for rehabilitation. Unfortunately, there are few community based rehabilitation program for post-stroke patients who stay at home. The authors developed a community based selp-help management program for post-stroke patients to enhance their rehabilitation process. The program consists of five sessions and each session contains health education. ROM exercise, ADL training, and stress management like foot reflexology. A professor and two graduate students of nursing college coordinated the program. To test the effects of the program we conducted a 5 week program to the 10 conveniently selected post-stroke patients who were living in Kang-buk district of Seoul. The Questionnaires about ADLs, IADLs, depression and life satisfaction were asked to the all subjects before and after program. The hand grisp power and muscle strength of four limbs were measured at the end of each sessions. The analysis of data revealed that the program was effective to increase the ADLs, IADLs, and muscle strength and to decrease the depression levels of subjects. However, there was no significant difference between pre and post hand grisp power and life satisfaction. Because the program was effective to Improve the physical and psycholocial function of subjects, we suggest continual development and Implementation of community based self-help management programs.

  • Background: We first launched the case management program for diabetic patients who were registered in NHIC (National Health Insurance Corporation) in Korea and conducted this study to assess the effectiveness of the program. Methods: During the period from October in 2002 to March in 2003, 30 case managers performed the program for 71 diabetic patients. We evaluated the effectiveness of the program based on the results of fasting blood sugar level, two hour post-prandial blood sugar level, knowledge for diabetes, difficulty index in diabetes management, and the health risk factor changes of them. We analyzed results related to these factors through $x^2$ test and paired t-test. Results: The ave rage age of the subjects was 58.9. and the numbers of women and men were 43 and 28 respectively. The fasting blood sugar level and two hour post-prandial blood sugar level decreased from 164.3mg/dl to 146.5mg/dl and from 224.0mg/dl to 203.0mg/dl respectively. The knowledge for diabetes and difficulty index in diabetes management changed from 8.13 to 9.10 and from 3.52 to 2.91 respectively, and these changes were the positive. We observed improvement in self-test of sugar level, foot management, oral hygiene and proper medication but not in self-test of nutritional management. Conclusions: This study revealed that the case management program for diabetic patients who were registered in NHIC is significantly effective. However, the program need to study further to understand its long-term effects.

  • The present study explores the effect of blended action learning program on the improvement of the self-directed learning skills of university students. For this, students in the college of education at D University located in the capital area were selected to form 30 students of the experimental group and 30 of the control group. The average age of the subjects is 22.3. They are students in the $2^{nd}$ to $4^{th}$ year of university and the demographic background is relatively homogeneous. The experiment was conducted in the Sociology of Education class (a teacher training course). The self-directed learning skills were pre-tested at the beginning of the term. After that, the experimental group had the class with blended action learning program, and the control group had the class with action learning program. The post-test was carried out at the end of the term. For data analysis, ANCOVA was carried out to compare the scores on post-test of the two groups in consideration of the scores on the pre-test. The results show that first, for the improvement of self-directed learning skills of university students, blended action learning program is more effective than action learning program. Second, in the class for learners with lower degree of cognition and experience, blended action learning program was more effective than action learning program. Third, in terms of management of learning resources and utilization of learning strategies, both action learning program and blended action learning program were not effective. In summary, for improvement of the self-directed learning skills of university students, action learning program, which is a learning method focused on learner's participation and practice, is more effective than the traditional collective lecture among diverse teaching methods. Yet in consideration of the elementary level of university students in terms of intelligence and experience, active use of blended action learning program is required.
