  • This study was to investigate the effects of percussion program on depression and self-esteem for the elderly lived in residential care. 12 older adults participated in the 40-min. percussion program for 4 weeks(10 sessions). The percussion program consisted of three steps; 1) introduction for creating rapport and relationship, 2) process for mood induction and increasing interaction, and ending for increasing self-achievement and confirming the changed mood. Korean Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS) and Self-Esteem Scale (SES) were administered before the first session and after the completion of the program. Results showed statistical significance (p<.05) in KGDS (p=.020) and SES (p=.025). Findings imply that percussion program can induce positive changes in depression and self-esteem for elderly in the residential care, and more depressed elderly group may have better outcome in percussion playing. Future studies should consider various levels of depression among elderly, and design the program to be more sensitive to the level of functioning.

  • This study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design to develop an information provision program for arteriovenous fistula and angioplasty patients and to examine the effects of the information provision program offered by operating room nurses. The research subjects were selected trough convenience sampling who had come to hospitals to have an arteriovenous fistula and angioplasty surgery, and an experimental group and a control group of 40 persons. The information provision program consisted of two sessions, each conducted on the day of surgery and after surgery. The content included surgery information, pain management after surgery, management of dialysis blood vessels, how to handle emergency, and management of complications. The results of the study showed that the experimental group, which was offered an information provision program by nurses, a decrease in trait and state anxiety and an increase in self-efficacy on a statistically significant level. In conclusion, the information provision program provided by operating room nurses helped to reduce anxiety in arteriovenous fistula and angioplasty patients and increase their self-efficacy. This will improve end-stage renal disease patients' self-management ability after surgery, and thus, contribute to improving the prevention of complications and the level of self-nursing care.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a self-care program for elders with osteoarthritis managed by primary health care workers, Community Health Practitioners (CHPs), in rural Korea. Methods: The self-care program, consisting of 7 areas, was evaluated with a randomized experimental study for patients over age 60 with osteoarthritis in which 150 participants in the experimental group and 140 in the control group were compared. The self-care program was implemented for six weeks, 2 hours per week, at community health posts by CHPs. Data were collected using an interview questionnaire given by the CHPs and laboratory tests before and after the intervention for both groups. Propensity score matching analysis was done to test effectiveness after controlling for confounding variables. Results: The intervention group showed a significant decrease in the number of painful joints (p<.001) and a significant increase in self-care ability (p<.05) compared to the control group. Conclusion: Study results indicate that training and utilizing primary health care workers in rural areas is valuable in increasing the generalization and continuity of intervention programs. As arthritis should be managed life-long, CHP directed self-care programs are useful interventions for rural elders with arthritis to learn self-care management.

Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 44 inpatients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The experimental group (n=22) received the ACT-based stress management program twice a week for a total of four weeks. The control group (n=22) received the usual care from their primary health care providers. The study was carried out from August 7 to September 1, 2017, and data were analyzed using IBM SPSS/WIN 22.0 with a Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and an independent t-test. Results: The experimental group showed a significant decrease in hospitalization stress (t=5.09, p<.001) and an increase in self-efficacy (t=2.44, p=.019). However, there was no significant difference in psychological well-being between the two groups (t=0.13, p=.894). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the ACT-based stress management program can be used as an effective mental health nursing intervention for hospitalization stress and self-efficacy for inpatients with schizophrenia.

Planning was influenced by the students' majors and by their participation in time management education. Regular habits were influenced by the students' genders and their families' social status. No variables affected goal-oriented behavior. Time management (especially planning and goal-oriented behavior) and gender had strong effects on self-efficacy, and male students showed more self-efficacious behavior than their female counterparts. Time management (especially planning and regular habits) and gender had strong effects on academic achievement, and female students received higher academic grades than their male counterparts. Based on these results, time management was confirmed as an influential element in self-efficacy and academic achievement.
