  • This paper presents the optimum load-speed diagram evaluation for a linear micromotor, including multitude cantilever piezoelectric bimorphs, briefly. Each microbeam in the mechanism can be actuated in both axial and flexural modes simultaneously. For this design, we consider quasi-static and linear conditions, and a relatively new numerical method called the smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) is introduced here. For this purpose, after finding an optimum volume fraction for piezoelectric layers through a standard numerical method such as quadratic finite element method, the relevant load-speed curves of the optimized micromotor are examined and compared by deterministic topology optimization (DTO) design. In this regard, to avoid the overly stiff behavior in FEM modeling, a numerical method known as the cell-based smoothed finite element method (CS-FEM, as a branch of S-FEM) is applied for our DTO problem. The topology optimization procedure to find the optimal design is implemented using a solid isotropic material with a penalization (SIMP) approximation and a method of moving asymptotes (MMA) optimizer. Because of the higher efficiency and accuracy of S-FEMs with respect to standard FEMs, the main micromotor characteristics of our final DTO design using a softer CS-FEM are substantially improved.

  • A Navier-Stokes code has been developed to simulate the flow through a cross flow fan. It is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses moving grid technique to model the rotation of the fan. A low Reynolds number turbulence model is used to calculate eddy viscosity. The basic algorithm is SIMPLE. Numerical simulations over a wide range of flow rate aye carried out to validate the code. Comparison of all numerical solutions with experimental data confirms the validity of the present code. Present numerical solutions show a noticeable improvement over a previous numerical method which is based on a model of body force to simulate the rotation of the impeller.

  • A numerical technique for simulating incompressible viscous flow with free surface is presented. The flow field is obtained by penalty finite element formulation. In this work, a modified volume of fluid (VOF) method which is compatible with 4-node element is proposed to track the moving free surface. This scheme can be applied to irregular mesh system, and can be easily extended to three dimensional geometries. Numerical analyses were done for two benchmark examples, namely the broken dam problem and the solitary wave propagation problem. The numerical results were in close agreement with the existing data. Illustrative examples were studied to show the effectiveness of the proposed numerical scheme.

  • A general procedure for the numerical solution of coupled, nonlinear, differential two-point boundary-value problems, solutions of which are crucial to the controller design, has been developed and demonstrated. A fixed-end-points, free-terminal-time, optimal-control problem, which is derived from Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, is solved by an extension of Davidenko's method, a differential form of Newton's method, for algebraic root finding. By a discretization process like finite differences, the differential equations are converted to a nonlinear algebraic system. Davidenko's method reconverts this into a pseudo-time-dependent set of implicitly coupled ODEs suitable for solution by modern, high-performance solvers. Another important advantage of Davidenko's method related to the time-optimal problem is that the terminal time can be computed by treating this unkown as an additional variable and sup- plying the Hamiltonian at the terminal time as an additional equation. Davidenko's method uas used to produce optimal trajectories of a single-degree-of-freedom problem. This numerical method provides switching times for open-loop control, minimized terminal time and optimal input torque sequences. This numerical technique could easily be adapted to the multi-point boundary-value problems.

  • In this paper, some numerical methods recently developed for gas-liquid two-phase flows are reviewed. And then, a preconditioning method to solve cavitating flow by the author is introduced. This method employs a finite-difference Runge-Kutta method combined with MUSCL TVD scheme, and a homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model. So that it permits to treat simply the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field including wave propagation, large density changes and incompressible flow characteristic at low Mach number. Finally, numerical results such as detailed observations of the unsteady cavity flows, a sheet cavitation break-off phenomena and some data related to performance characteristics of hydrofoils are shown.

  • In this paper, a new soft ground tunneling technique termed the PNT method(Pre-Nailed Tunneling Method) is studied. Mechanism of the method is investigated in terms of theoretical and numerical approaches. The pre-nailing effects are validated by performing two dimensional numerical analyses. It is identified that the method is successful in soft grounds, and greatly efficient in reducing the ground deformation by nailing the ground. To develop the design guidelines of the method, numerical parametric analyses on the installation range and angle were also carried out.

  • Locality-sensitive hashing techniques have been developed to efficiently handle nearest neighbor searches and similar pair identification problems for large volumes of high-dimensional data. This study proposes a locality-sensitive hashing method that can be applied to nearest neighbor search problems for data sets containing both numerical and categorical attributes. The proposed method makes use of dual hashing functions, where one function is dedicated to numerical attributes and the other to categorical attributes. The method consists of creating indexing structures for each of the dual hashing functions, gathering and combining the candidates sets, and thoroughly examining them to determine the nearest ones. The proposed method is examined for a few synthetic data sets, and results show that it improves performance in cases of large amounts of data with both numerical and categorical attributes.

  • Some computational fluid dynamics problems concerning the thin films flow of viscous fluid with a free surface and draining or coating fluid-flow problems can be delineated by third-order ordinary differential equations. In this paper, the aim is to introduce the numerical solutions of the boundary value problems of such equations by variational iteration method. In this paper, it is shown that the third-order boundary value problems can be written as a system of integral equations, which can be solved by using the variational iteration method. These solutions are gleaned in terms of convergent series. Numerical examples are given to depict the method and their convergence.

  • This paper presents a novel numerical method based on the extended moving least squares finite difference method(MLS FDM) for solving 1-D Stefan problem. The MLS FDM is employed for easy numerical modelling of the moving boundary and Taylor polynomial is extended using wedge function for accurate capturing of interfacial singularity. Difference equations for the governing equations are constructed by implicit method which makes the numerical method stable. Numerical experiments prove that the extended MLS FDM show high accuracy and efficiency in solving semi-infinite melting, cylindrical solidification problems with moving interfacial boundary.
