Parent Perspectives of Diagnostic and Monitoring Tests Undertaken by Their Child with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

  • Purpose: To assess parent perspectives of the current and potential future tests for their child with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods: New Zealand parents of a child with IBD were invited to complete an anonymous online survey. Experiences relating to their child's blood or faecal tests, medical imaging (abdominal ultrasound [US], abdominal computerised tomography [CT] and magnetic resonance enterography) and colonoscopy were collected. Perceived attitudes to potential future testing of urine, saliva, and breath, were sought. Results: Twenty-eight parents, 93% female completed the survey, and 86% were aged between 35 and 54 years. Baseline information was provided by parents for 27 of 28 children, 70.3% had Crohn's disease with a mean disease duration of 2.67 years. Blood tests were the most requested and completed tests, while CT was the least ordered and most refused test. Colonoscopy was rated as the least comfortable and generated the most worry. Explanation of test significantly improved parent's levels of understanding when their child had blood, faecal, imaging (US) or colonoscopy tests. Providing an explanation, test invasiveness and the impact of the blood results may have on their child's treatment significantly improved parents' comfort levels. However, explanation of colonoscopy generated a significant parental concerns. Saliva, urine and blood tests were chosen as the most preferred disease monitoring tests. Conclusion: Parents preferred any tests less invasive than colonoscopy for monitoring their child's IBD. Although providing explanation of their child's tests enhanced parents' understanding, it can also affect parents' levels of concern and comfort.

  • Robust analogues of the likelihood ratio test are considered for testing of hypotheses involving multiple discrete distributions. The test statistics are generalizations of the Hellinger deviance test of Simpson(1989) and disparity tests of Lindsay(1994), obtained by looking at a 'penalized' version of the distances; harris and Basu (1994) suggest that the penalty be based on reweighting the empty cells. The results show that often the tests based on the ordinary and penalized distances enjoy better robustness properties than the likelihood ratio test. Also, the tests based on the penalized distances are improvements over those based on the ordinary distances in that they are much closer to the likelihood ratio tests at the null and their convergence to the x$^2$ distribution appears to be dramatically faster; extensive simulation results show that the improvement in performance of the tests due to the penalty is often substantial in small samples.

  • The BI(Ball Indentation) method has a potential to assess the mechanical properties and to replace conventional fracture tests. In this study, the BI test system has been developed to evaluate material properties. Tensile tests, fracture toughness tests, hardness tests and BI tests were performed by the system using four classes of thermally aged specimens. The results of the BI tests were in good agreement with fracture characteristics from a standard fracture test method.

  • This paper explains environmental tests of vessel-launched missiles, verifying if a fully assembled missile performs properly from disturbance on delivery by vehicles or naval vessels. We also have operated vibration tests by ground and naval transportation as well as shock tests by naval transportation before firing. The environmental tests have adopted Military Standard Specification and confirmed missile's reliability by performance tests, followed by missile's development. However, this significant testing which have meaning was dong by the missile's body and not with parts.

  • An attempt has been made in this study to evaluate an applicability of Relative Effective Porosity Model (REPM) as a method for estimating saturated hydraulic conductivity (K$_{s}$) for homogeneous coarse, medium, and fine sands. The saturated hydraulic conductivities obtained from REPM are converted into average linear velocities using Darcy's Law and compared with the results from experimental tracer tests for homogeneous coarse, medium, and fine sand layer. Two types of tracer tests analyses, analytical solution using CXTFIT and moment methods, are performed to obtain reasonable linear velocity range for each layer. For the coarse and medium sands, the converted average linear velocity from REPM is in the velocity range obtained from tracer tests. However, small difference between the results from REPM and tracer tests is found for the fine sands. These results show that REPM gives reasonable estimates of saturated hydraulic conductivity.y.

  • Linear cutting tests on granite were conducted to evaluated the cutting performance of abrasive water jet(AWJ) using several types of abrasives. The abrasives used in the tests were grarnet, alumimum oxide, and silicon carbide. And one type of granite which is comercially known as "KeuchangSuk" was used as workpiece throughout the tests. The results from the tests were described in terms of cutting depth and abrasive productivity. Authors tried to confirm the effects of the operational parameters of abrasive mass flow rate, water pressure, and traverse speed of nozzle on cutting depth and presented almost all the data obtained in the tests. Abrasive productivity can be defined as the area of kerf wall cut by unit weight of abrasive and is an important factor to evaluated the cutting ability of abrasive and assess the cost effectiveness of an AWJ system. In the tests the maximum abrasive productivities of garnet, alumina, and silicon carbide were about 0.21, 0.24, and 0.20 $\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively under similar operational conditions.onditions.

  • Based on observation emerged from the undrained tests and the anisotropic consolidation tests, an incremental stress-strain theory for rockfill is proposed in a manner similar to that developed ky Cambridge Group for normally consolidated soils; the volumetric strain due to stress increment is the same as the increment due to an undrained component followed by an increment along the constant stress ratio path. The strains in drained tests are predicted from those in the undrained tests and in the anisotropic consolidation tests. An expression for the undrained stress path is derived based on the bilinear relationship between the pore pressure developed and the stress ratio observed during untrained tests. Good agreement is found between the calculated and measured strains. This trend in behaviour would be helpful in establishing a stress.strain model for rockfill using the elasto-plastic behaviour with the concept of plastic potentials and flow rules.

The least squares estimation for failure step-stress accelerated life tests

  • The least squares estimation method for model parameters under failure step-stress accelerated life tests is studied and a numerical example will be given to illustrate the proposed inferential procedures under the compound linear plans proposed as an alternative to the optimal quadratic plan, assuming that the exponential distribution with a quadratic relationship between stress and log-mean lifetime. The proposed compound linear plan for constant stress accelerated life tests and 4:2:1 plan are compared for various situations. Even though the compound linear plan was proposed under constant stress accelerated life tests, we found that this plan did well relatively in failure step-stress accelerated life tests.

  • The KSR-III developed by KARI is the first rocket vehicle which is adopting the liquid propellant rocket engine system in Korea. Not only the engine itself, but also the propellant feeding system is one of the most important component in liquid rocket vehicle. In this paper, the authors are intended to introduce the multi-purpose test facility(PTA-II Test Facility) which is constructed for the variety of tests on KSR-III feeding system(single component tests, verification tests, cold flow tests and combustion tests). With the results of these tests, we can identify the characteristics of rocket feeding system and decide the optimum setting values of feeding system for the successful flight.

  • This research is the experimental and numerical study of investigating the characteristics of consolidation due to selfweight of soft marine clay. Column tests and centrifuge tests were carried out to selfweight of soft marine clay. Column tests and centrifuge tests were carried out to simulate the selfweight consolidations in field. Tests were conducted with changing drain boundary conditions and initial void ratios corresponding to four and five times of liquid limits. The RI meter was used to measure void ratio during consolidation of sample in column tests. Test results were analyzed by using the Terzaghi's infinitesimal strain theory and the finite strain theory.
