  • Background: It has been argued that changes in muscle activity in the upper trapezius and serratus anterior may or may not cause shoulder joint pain and dysfunction. Objective: To investigate the effects of active vibration exercise on muscle activity regarding scapular stabilization using a flexi-bar. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of 24 subjects were randomly assigned to a flexi-bar group with active vibration and general stick group with non-active vibration. Both groups performed the same four action programs for 6 weeks, three times a week for 30 minutes at a time. The upper trapezius muscle, middle trapezius muscle, lower trapezius muscle and serratus anterior muscle of the dominant side was measured by electromyography before and after the 6 weeks of exercise. The independent t-test and paired t-test were used to analyze data. Results: There was a significant difference between groups in upper trapezius muscle and serratus anterior muscle activity after exercise (P<.05). Also, there was a significant difference in upper trapezius muscle and serratus anterior muscle activity before and after exercise in the flexi-bar group (P<.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that active vibration exercise using a flexi-Bar contribute to reduce the activity of the upper trapezius muscle and promote the activity of the serratus anterior muscle.

  • Pitch pine (Pinus rigida Miller) retaining walls using Steel bar, of which the constructability and strength performance are good at the construction site, were manufactured and their strength properties were evaluated. The wooden retaining wall using Steel bar was piled into four stories stretcher and three stories header, which is 770 mm high, 2,890 mm length and 782 mm width. Retaining wall was made by inserting stretchers into Steel bar after making 18 mm diameter of holes at top and bottom stretcher, and then stacking other stretchers and headers which have a slit of 66 mm depth and 18 mm width. The strength properties of retaining walls were investigated by horizontal loading test, and the deformation of structure by image processing (AlCON 3D OPA-PRO system). Joint (Type-A) made with a single long stretcher and two headers, and joint (Type-B) made with two short stretchers connected with half lap joint and two headers were in the retaining wall using Steel bar. The compressive shear strength of joint was tested. Three replicates were used in each test. In horizontal loading test the strength was 1.6 times stronger in wooden retaining wall using Steel bar than in wooden retaining wall using square timber. The timber and joints were not fractured in the test. When testing compressive shear strength, the maximum load of type-A and Type-B was 130.13 kN and 130.6 kN, respectively. Constructability and strength were better in the wooden retaining wall using Steel bar than in wooden retaining wall using square timber.

  • Steel corrosion is a very significant problem both to durability and structural safety since reinforcement has to support loads in tensile region in RC(Reinforced Concrete) member. In the paper, newly invented FRP Hybrid Bar and normal steel are embedded in RC beam member, and ICM (Impressed Current Method) is adopted for corrosion acceleration. Utilizing the previous theory of Faraday's Law, corrosion amount is calculated and flexural tests are performed for RC beam with FRP Hybrid Bar and steel, respectively. Corrosion amount level of 4.9~7.8% is measured in normal RC member and the related reduction of flexural capacity is measured to be -25.4~-50.8%, however there are no significant reduction of flexural capacity and corrosion initiation in RC samples with FRP Hybrid Bar due to high resistance of epoxy-coated steel to corrosion initiation. In the accelerated corrosion test, excellent performance of anti-corrosion and bonding with concrete are evaluated but durability evaluation through long-term submerged test is required for actual utilization.

  • Recently many efforts on the development of automatic processing system for delivery sequence sorting have been performed in ETRI, which requires the use of postal 4 state bar code system to encode delivery points. This paper addresses the issue on the reduction of reading error in postal 4 state raster beam based bar code reader by adjusting measured values of bar code width to its average value over each interval. The test results show that the above method reduces the average reading error rate approximately by 90-100%.

  • The split Hopkinson bar technique is the most widely used method to study material behavior at high strain rate deformation. In the present paper, a torsional Hopkinson bar for testing thin-walled tube specimens at high strain rate is described. From the experiment of aluminum 6061, dynamic stress-strain relationship can be obtained and dynamic result is compared with static one.

  • The presence of a bar in disk galaxies indicates that galaxies reached their dynamical maturity, and secular evolution has started to play key roles in the evolution of disk galaxies. Numerical simulations predicted that as a barred galaxy evolves, the bar becomes longer by capturing its immediate neighbor disk stars. We test the hypothesis by exploring bar lengths and measuring the light deficit around the bar at various redshift. Supplementing already classified barred galaxies in later type disk galaxies ($$T{\geq_-}2$$, Sheth et al. 2008), we classify barred galaxies among earlier type disk galaxies (T<2) up to z~0.8 using F814W images from the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). We estimate the length of bars analytically for ~400 galaxies, and find that there is a slight decrease in bar length with redshift. We also find that longer bars show more prominent light deficit around the bar and this trend is stronger for nearby galaxies. Our results are consistent with the predictions from numerical simulations, and imply that the bar induced secular evolution is already in place since z~0.8.

  • Rotary bar was cutting tool being in use for deburring scale after welding metal and for eliminating sharp edges. It was necessary to develop exclusive 6-axis machine being possible to process machining continuously for making an cutting edge of rotary bar and to revise easily machining program. This study aimed at the structural analysis of strength according to the configuration of new made 6-axis machine and at the machining accuracy and durability of rotary bar. As a result of test, the runout of new rotary bar manufactured out of 6-axis machine was decreased from 0.385 mm to 0.027mm extensively than old one. And good cutting ability and durability was obtained equal quality compared with imported products.

  • Tension stiffening effects of reinforced concrete member with large diameter bar, mainly used at reactor building of nuclear power plant, are studied by uniaxial structural tests. Bond length and stress of steel bar, size of steel bar, and compressive strength of concrete are evaluated to tension stiffening by uniaxial tests. Problems and solution during the uniaxial test are suggested. The prevent splitting cracks, concrete cover-to-bar diameter ratio $c/d_{b}$ is kept 2.6~2.8. Because the bond length is increased as the size of steel bar, the specimen length of the D35 steel bar is required at least 2.0 m. The specimen length must be decided with bond length as well as concrete cover-to-bar diameter ratio to prevent splitting crack.

  • This paper presents results on a study of the Rayleigh wave scattering in concrete with a steel bar using transient elastic waves. To study the characteristics of the scattered waves induced by a steel bar in concrete, a three-dimensional finite element method was adopted. A case for elastic wave propagation parallel to the steel bar is discussed. The effect of the cover thickness and steel bar diameter on the Rayleigh wave was studied. To confirm the numerical investigations, a concrete specimen containing a steel bar was made, and corresponding transient elastic wave experiments were conducted. It is believed that the result of this study can serve as an important reference in a nondestructive evaluation of concrete with a steel bar.

  • The objective of this experimental study was to understand the effect of horizontal shear bar on the shear behavior of R.C. deep beams. Therefore, in the test program, the horizontal shear bar ratio($\rho_{sh}$) and shear span-to-overall depth ratio(a/h) are considered as two main variables. Test results indicate that for deep beams with a/h equal to 1.0, horizontal shear bar is less efficient in restricting the diagonal crack width development and enhancing the ultimate shear strength. So, it can be concluded that shear resistance of horizontal shear bar is related to a/h rather than clear span-to-effective depth ratio($l_{n}$/d) recommended in ACI code.
