This study investigated the perceptions of high school students for 8 performance assessment methods in a chemistry teacher's class by using an explanatory sequential design. To this end, a survey was conducted with 439 students from 10 high schools, and after that, 28 students from 5 schools were interviewed to interpret the survey results. The findings were as follows: First, students were experiencing a biased assessment method rather than various performance methods. Second, intuitive confirmation, relevance to a career path, and internal growth were mentioned in the performance assessment method that felt fun, and readiness and unclear evaluation criteria were mentioned in the performance assessment method that felt difficult. Third, the students recognized that it was not an appropriate performance method if the assessment result was affected by individual abilities less relevant to the chemistry subject or the assessment criteria were unclear.

Even though software (SW) education has not been considered part of the current national kindergarten curriculum, in practice there is growing interest in adopting it. Teachers would be expected to play a key role in the successful introduction and implementation of new educational changes, such as SW education. In preparation for its adoption in ECE, it would be useful to determine ECE teachers' perception and attitudes toward early childhood software education. For this study, 219 ECE teachers' level of concern toward SW education was surveyed using the Stages of Concern Questionnaire. It was found that the teachers' level of concern was the highest at stage 0-Unconcerned and that they had high levels of stage management, personal and informational concern. Thus, a non-user pattern was mostly indicated. However, compared to the typical non-user pattern, the pattern aspect close to critical non-user ever appeared to some extent. In addition, a significant difference in the level of concern was shown at all stages depending on the awareness of the necessity for SW education. The teachers with SW training experience showed a higher intensity only at stage 0. There was a statistically significant difference in stages 0 and 6 depending on the future implementation decision. These results will be utilized as a resource in building an ECE teachers' support system according to their level of concern about SW education.
The purpose of this study is to introduce the current status of geography education research in South Korea. This article consists of mainly two parts: 1) source of knowledge and 2) content of knowledge in geography education research. The main academic journals are introduced as the sources of knowledge. The research trends in these journals are discussed as the content of knowledge. We classified geography education research into three types based on the framework suggested by Bednarz (2000): 1) nature of geographic knowledge, learning, and curriculum, 2) teacher education in geography, and 3) strategies in the geography classroom. Relevant research regarding each category is introduced. We hope this study serves as an access point where geography educators in South Korea and other countries facilitate interactions with each other.
In this study, elementary school teachers' needs for the website providing science instructional materials were examined. The participants were 151 elementary school teachers. The test for needs analysis consisted of fifty-three Likert-type items; 24 items for the content of website category and 29 items for the design of website category. Variables about participants' characteristics such as teaching career, the capability of using computers, and the frequencies of searching websites in obtaining science instructional materials were also examined. The results indicated that teachers' needs for the content of website category were significantly higher than those for the design of website category. Teachers' needs were relatively higher in the items concerning flawless materials, consistency of materials with science curriculum and/or learning objectives, information about target grade and/or related topics, free website, and the materials capable of immediate use in the content of website category. The items concerning the stability of website, the accuracy of links, providing easy and reliable searching methods, easy and fast downloading, and providing list of loaded materials showed relatively higher needs in the design of website category. In several items, teachers' needs were also changed with their individual characteristics.
This study attempted to analyze the jobs of early childhood special education teachers working in kindergarten's special classes using the DACUM technique. To this end, the DACUM Committee was formed with six early childhood special education teachers with extensive field experience. A total of six DACUM workshops were conducted to derive job definition, job descriptions, and job specifications. As a result, the job description of early childhood special education teachers consisted of 9 duties and 53 tasks, and the job specification consisted of 80 knowledge, 98 skills, and 22 attitudes. Early childhood special education teachers working in kindergarten's special classes were tasks differentiated from special education teachers working in elementary and secondary school including home-linked guidance, health and safety management, elementary school transfer guidance, environmental composition according to play topics, and indoor and outdoor play activities guidance. In the case of knowledge, the Special Education Act on the Disabled, etc. and knowledge on behavioral modification took precedence. Skill showed high frequency of observation-record, parental interviews and parental education skills. Attitudes as experts and administrators took priority. The results of this job analysis can help organize a curriculum to train early childhood special education teachers with high job competency in universities.
In this study, the experimental apparatus for boiling point and melting point in science textbooks of various curriculums were analyzed. Science teachers' views on the difference between the experimental value and the value written in textbooks were inquired, too. Their views on the experimental apparatus, nd results of freezing point, melting point, boiling point, fractional distillation, and thermometer calibration were also investigated. The results of this study showed that the types of experimental apparatus for boiling point and melting point were somewhat dif-ferent with science textbooks and curriculum. The teachers' views were also various according to their background. In the experiment of the fractional distillat ion, a large number of teachers recognized mismatch between the exper-imental value and the value written in textbooks as mistake of textbook contents or problem of experiment itself. The teachers of chemistry background take higher recognition of the requirement of thermometer calibration than those of non-chemistry background in middle school.
This study surveys how teachers can improve their understanding about the concept of declination only through reading the material presented as non-dipole magnetic model. This study also investigates a difference between the content of declination presented in "Earth Science II" textbook under the 2009 revised National Curriculum and that of the past one. Thirty teachers in Gyeonggi province and thirty three in the city of Seoul are surveyed; they are selected from the participants of required training that provides their first grade regular teaching certification. Findings of this study are as follows. First, the study finds that teacher participants possess several misconceptions about the declination. Their typical misconception show that a compass needle directly indicates the magnetic north pole. This type of misconception is not corrected only by a reading the material. Second, the study shows that the degree of teachers' understanding about the concept of declination improves through the reading the material of a non-dipole magnetic model. Third, the study reveals that the material of nod-dipole magnetic model is more effective with teachers than students. Finally, the study suggests that explanations including non-dipole magnetic model be revised in the current textbooks.

The purpose of this study is to confirm secondary biology teachers' recognition about cell and gene concepts that should be taught in biology according to each school level and to classify the concepts into essential, optional and non-essential ones. We developed a questionnaire in consultation with 5 biology professors after selecting some biological concepts from some data about the recommendations of BSCS, biology, study for the connection with biological contents in each school level. This survey was conducted to biological teachers in secondary schools (146 individuals) from all over Korea for studying the concepts of the cell and gene in elementary and secondary schools. The results of this study revealed the following: The number of essential concepts in the cell and gene domain increases as the school levels go up. Moreover, secondary biology teacher recognized that there must be much more cell and gene concepts that should be taught in elementary and secondary schools compared to those suggested in the science curriculum and BSCS' recommendation.
This paper aims to find out how did elementary students understand scientific units in science textbooks. The subjects were 191 students of the 6th grade from 7 elementary schools in 3 different areas, consisting of 70 from 4 village schools of, 64 from 2 town schools of Gyeongnam province, and 57 from one city school in Ulsan Metro City. A test was developed based on the analysis of scientific units in the science textbooks and teacher's manuals constructed according to the 6th and 7th National Science Curriculum. The understanding of elementary students' on the scientific units(Temperature, Length, Weight, Volume, Speed, Plane Angle) were surveyed. The result are as follows: Regarding the temperature unit, the students generally well understand why to measure and how to read temperature, but had some problem in recording it, in confusion with the plane angle sign. As for the length unit, they obtained high scores in understanding the purpose of measuring length as well as recording and reading it. Which indicates that they are well aware of and use the unit appropriately. With respect to the weight unit, they got high scores in reading and recording weight, which means most students have no problem using the unit. However, it was found that they do not understand why to use the plate balance scale. The volume unit was one in which the students got relatively lower scores. They do not perceive the object of using a scale cylinder and confuse it with a device of length measurement. The unit of speed is the most difficult one for children's of science to understand, presumably, because it is an derived unit from two basic units. It is also assumed that the students got the highest score in the plane angle unit because they studied the unit immediately before the test. From the children's understanding of science units above the teacher's understanding and teaching methods presumed to play a major role for children to understand and use the science units properly.
This study aims to improve teacher education by analyzing the causes and backgrounds of which pre-service mathematics teachers experience learning difficulties on the topic of discrete mathematics. To this end, we conducted a questionnaire and an evaluation on the topic of discrete mathematics, and the obtained data were analyzed. The results show that (1) pre-service mathematics teachers need to share their perceptions of the need for discrete mathematics education; (2) a review of the adequacy of the discrete mathematical content and its credits are required; (3) the causes of their learning difficulties need to be looked at from a different perspective than the learning factors. And two implications were obtained. First, it is necessary to study the systematicity and sequence of content elements of discrete mathematics in the aspect of its continuity of curriculum of secondary school and university. Second, it is required consideration for adjusting the ratio of discrete mathematics to secondary teachers' employment examination.
