  • This paper presents a navigation system based on the tactical communication and vision system in outdoor environments which is applied to unmanned robot for perimeter surveillance operations. GPS errors of robot are compensated by the reference station of C2(command and control) vehicle and WiBro(Wireless Broadband) is used for the communication between two systems. In the outdoor environments, GPS signals can be easily blocked due to trees and buildings. In this environments, however, vision system is very efficient because there are many features. With the feature MAP around the operation environments, the robot can estimate the position by the image matching and pose estimation. In the navigation system, thus, operation modes is switched by navigation manager according to some environment conditions. The experimental results show that the unmanned robot can estimate the position very accurately in outdoor environment.

  • P-3C/K aircraft for maritime patrols that Republic of Korea Navy is using, is equipped with a variety of sensors and communication devices. Collected data from the aircraft is managed as tactical information by flight operators and stored. When the flight mission is completed, this information is transferred to tactical support center on the ground and played back or used for follow-up work through a analysis tool. During a flight mission, there are tens of thousands of detection objects within an hour in KADIZ (Korea air defense identification zone). In contrast, in TSD (tactical situation display), which displays a map when using the analysis tool, all detected objects are expressed as symbols. The increase in display symbols has a significant impact on the TSD image updating and consequently interferes with the smooth operation of operators. In this paper, we propose applying multiple threads and multiple layers to improve the performance of existing TSD. And the performance improvement is proven through the execution results.

  • This paper evaluates on the feasibility of MIL-STD-188-220 protocol as a medium access protocol over WNW(Wideband Network Waveform) by simulating and comparing with IEEE 802.11e-based protocol. WNW is newly designed waveform for next-generation broadband tactical communication system. This paper shows the feasibility of using the MIL-STD-188-220 protocol that shows better performance than IEEE 802.11e-based protocol on the particular environment.

  • Tactical Data Links are standardized radio communication data links for military armed forces and used to transmit and receive data. Because they are the core elements of achieving information superiority in a NCW environment, various kinds of TDL are used by the Korean armed forces. Operating various types of TDL is very helpful in getting more information; however, at the same time, it is hard to integrate and make them co-operate with other TDLs or C4ISR systems. In this paper, we propose a XML based messaging system to make various types of TDL interoperable in a NCW environment. For the messaging system between TDL and C4ISR systems, we define XML message processing interfaces and suggest binary XML for serialization to save transmission loads over constrained military communication bandwidth. Our experiment results show that the TDL message can be transformed into generalized XML data that is interoperable with other TDLs and binary XML serialization, and it saves parsing and transmission time.

  • As the 4th Industrial revolution technology develops, it is expected that future technologies will be used in the military. The Army is developing the Army TIGER 4.0 system, which means innovative changes in mobile, networked, and intelligent ground forces. In order to utilize future technologies, it is necessary to be able to transmit and receive large amounts of data between weapon systems, but there are limitations to supporting this through TICN and ANASIS. Therefore, in this paper, the information exchange requirements generated by the Army TIGER 4.0 battalion and the amount of traffic by communication layer are analyzed based on the battalion defense operation scenario to suggest information distribution capability of the future tactical communication system.

  • The military tactical vehicle currently being operated is manufactured by improving the parts of commercial vehicles. In addition, the power supply system is applied by installing a separate converter inside the communication room to secure the operating environment of communication equipment. On the other hand, due to electromagnetic radiation noise, there are problems in frequent noise and deterioration in communication sensitivity during wireless communication in vehicles. To improve these, an advanced power supply system is applied, which is also equipped with an alternator to receive power required for communication equipment reducing broadband electromagnetic radiation noise. An additionally installed alternator, which is located in the engine room, is separated from the communication room where communication equipment is operated and is expected to reduce the effect of electromagnetic radiation noise generated from the power supply system. To verify these, a broadband radiation test was performed on a previous and advanced one. As a result, the broadband radiation noise of vehicles with an applied advanced power supply system satisfied all of the domestic vehicle safety standards and reduced in most of the sections except for some frequencies compared to previous typed vehicles. In particular, broadband radiation noise was decreased by up to 10.751 dB𝜇V/m in the vertical sections in 170 to 200 MHz on the right side of the vehicle.

  • Wireless mesh network (WMN) has recently emerged as a promising technology for tactical operation. If a platoon is organized with MPs, this system is suitable for tactical coverage is given for battle field where there is a shortage of wired infrastructure. However, MPs of typical WMN are generally fixed. This condition does not apply to diverse tactical scenarios. In this paper, it is considered that MPs have group mobility for flexible tactical networks. We propose cluster based multi-channel MAC scheme for mobilie WMN with single antenna condition. We have reduced the collision problems and message storming problems occur by mobility, so the reliability of WMN has been improved. Consequently, reliable communication is guaranteed by our framework in mobile WMN.

  • Tactical Information Communication Network(TICN) is a concept-type integrated Military Communication system that enables precise command control and decision making by unifying the diversified military communication network and conveying diverse range of battle field information on real-time, at right place at right time. TICN is designed to advance into high speed, large capacity, long distance wireless relay transmission. To support mobility in battlefield environments, the application of Ad-hoc networking technology to its wireless communication has been examined. Ad-hoc network is consist of mobile nodes and nodes in the network depends on the cooperation of other nodes for forwarding of packets. In this context, some non-cooperating nodes may delay forwarding of packets or drop the packets. This may hamper the network as a whole and disrupt communication between the cooperating nodes. To solve this problem, we present a solution with a Node Weight Management Server(NWMS), which manages each node's weight according to its behavior in local area. When the NWMS detects misbehaving node, it increases the node's weight. If the node's weight exceeds a predefined threshold then the NWMS broadcasts the node's information into network to isolate the misbehaving node from the network. These mechanisms show that they are highly effective and can reliably detect a multitude of misbehaving node.

  • Korean army has been trying to construct a future tactical network in collaboration with TICN at the ground level and the next-generation military satellite system in the space level. However, due to the low bandwidth and high operational cost, the satellite system has the limitation to exchange all kind of tactical information through it. To overcome the limitation, there have been several researches to construct airborne networks. In this paper, we propose an effective interworking architecture and operation scheme between terrestrial tactical networks and aerial relay networks to counteract against the communication breaks of terrestrial terminals. And, we also propose a way to analyze its effectiveness. The experimental results show that the interworking of aerial relay networks can manage the failure situations in terrestrial tactical networks very effectively.
