Analysis of Korean Students' Mathematics Learning Trends -Focused on 10th Graders- (우리나라 학생들의 수학 성취도에 관한 경향 분석 -고등학교 1학년 학생들을 중심으로-)

  • According to the TIMSS and PISA, Korean students proved to score one of the best group among the participated countries on the cognitive area of school mathematics. As an attempt to find out the Korean students' trends of mathematics learning, we compared Korean and American 10th graders' mathematics test result. It was proved that Korean students were especially well equipped in retaining basic fact and formulas.

A study on assessment framework in Mathematics Education (수학과 평가틀에 관한 고찰)

  • This study is to develop a mathematics assessment framework based on the mathematics assessment framework and content strands suggested by KEDI, NCTM, NAEP, TIMSS, Oregon State, New Zealand. According to the literature review, there has been more emphasis that students themselves 'communicate' what they 'understood' and how they 'thought' during the situation of 'solving problems'. As a result, communication ability is considered one of the most important factors in assessment situation, which always accompany the abilities of understanding, thinking, problem-solving, etc. In conclusion, the framework related to mathematical knowledge consists of content and behavior domains. The content domain is categorized into 6 content areas of the 7th mathematics curriculum, and the behavior domain is divided into computation, understanding, inference, problem-solving, and communication.

Reconsideration the construction and implementation of the national curriculum in mathematics (국가 수학 교육 과정의 구성 및 운영에 관한 재고)

  • Our mathematical curriculum has been revised frequently compared to another countries. The frequent revisions may mean that the current curriculum is not so complete in the selected contents of each grade levels. The idea is partially supported by the fact that the didactics of mathematics has both hypothesis-deductive and hypothesis-constructive property. Investigating the items which are used in TIMSS study and based on the relatively common curriculums of 40 more countries, the styles of them are a bit different from those of our textbooks of primary and secondary school. Hence, we consider that the construction and implementation of our mathematical curriculum may be a large scale of experiment for the improved curriculum carried by the nation. Additionally, we propose less compulsive curriculum than the current for minimizing the possible trial and errors.

  • The purpose of this study is to diagnose the problems of mathematics education in Korea by conducting an in-depth analysis of international comparative studies, a Delphi method, and a survey. Further analysis of TIMSS and PISA results also reveals several negative aspects of mathematics education practice in Korea. The mathematics education experts' opinions collected by Delphi method were classified into 12 categories: private education and test-driven education, curriculum and textbooks, lessons, evaluation, teacher, learner, teaching aid and facilities. affective aspects of mathematics, discrepancy between a theory and a practice, preservice/inservice teacher education and teacher employment test, education policy, and overall. Another survey was conducted to focus more on the development of curriculum which is a pending issue. Considering the fact that mathematics education should contribute to improve practical aspect as well as elaborate theoretical aspect, this study lays a foundation of improvement of mathematics education in Korea.

  • The framework for mathematics assessments traditionally has been organized around two dimensions, a content dimension specifying the subject matter to be assessed within mathematics, and a cognitive dimension specifying the domains or thinking processes to be assessed. The cognitive dimensions describe the sets of behaviors expected of students as they engage with the mathematics content. The purpose of this paper is an attempt to make diversify and concrete the sets of behaviors by reviewing the current strands suggested by CAST(College Scholastic Ability Test), assessment framework developed by KEDI, and NAEA(National Assessment of Educational Achievement), and as famous foreign tests PISA, TIMSS, NAEP and NCTM.

An Analysis of Korean Middle School Students' Achievement of Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science in TIMSS-R (우리 나라 중학생들의 과학적 탐구 및 과학의 본성 영역에서의 국제 성취도 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse achievement of 'Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science' in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat (TIMSS-R), which was performed in 1999 with 38 nations participating. Korean 8th grade students' achievement of 'Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science' was compared to that of other countries and other content areas in science. Average percent correct of items in each subcategory - Scientific Method, Experimental Design, Scientific Measurements, Describing and Interpreting Data - was also analysed. Although 'Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science' topics were not included in intended curriculum in Korea, Korean students' average scale score of 'Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science' was significantly higher than international average and, in comparison with other science content areas, achievement of that area was relatively high. The reasons could be that the most students studied topics related to 'Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science' through the implemented curriculum and that the Korean teachers recognized the importance of inquiry. According to the results to analyze subcategories, the average percent correct of Korea were higher than 50% except the 'Scientific Measurements' subcategory. However, the international average percent correct were lower than 50%. Especially, the average percent correct of Korea was the highest in 'Describing and Interpreting Data' subcategory despite there were many students who were confused at observation, hypothesis and conclusion.

An overview on humanistic imagination in mathematics education (수학교육에서 인문학적 상상력에 대한 소고)

  • The purpose of this study is to discuss what the incorporation of humanistic imagination into mathematics means to mathematics education and to suggest implications for mathematics education in school mathematics. Traditionally, mathematics has been perceived to be far from our life problems because it targets logical and pure abstract thinking. According to international mathematics and science studies such as TIMSS and PISA, Korean students have relatively high mathematics achievement in the international research, but their attitude toward mathematics is very negative and their awareness of why they are learning mathematics and their satisfaction with life is low. In mathematics education, linking mathematics with humanities imagination allows students to view problems of human life from a humanities perspective, and to have an understanding of others and reflect on themselves from a new perspective. The researcher introduces several examples of whether mathematics and humanistic imagination can be combined for mathematics education. In this study, the ultimate reason for learning mathematics is to achieve learners to realize the principles of life or Dharma, and to live a happier life. However, in order to expand its rich meaning by making these new attempts in mathematics education, the researcher argued that tolerance and patience are needed for many challenges and difficulties in improving the quality of mathematics content itself including applying humanistic imagination to mathematics properly.

The Relationship Between Students' Perception Toward Mathematics Teachers' Instructional Practices and Attitude toward Mathematics: A Mediation Role of Self-Efficacy Beliefs (학생의 수학 수업에 대한 인식과 수학적 태도의 관계 분석: 자기효능감의 매개를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how students' perception of their mathematics teachers' instructional practices is associated with students' attitude toward mathematics, taking into account their self-efficacy in mathematics. The sample contained 4669 Korean fourth graders who participated in Trends in International Mathematics Science Study 2015. We used exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis to explore the factor structure of three latent variables and conducted structural equation modeling to examine the hypothesized model. The results revealed that when students positively perceived their teachers' instructional practices, they tended to have a positive attitude toward mathematics. We also found that students' self-efficacy beliefs in mathematics positively mediated the relationship between perceived teachers' instructional practices and personal attitude toward mathematics. We discuss the practical and methodological implications of these findings and offer directions for future studies.

Comparative Study in Algebra Education with CAS: Korea and US cases (컴퓨터 대수체계(CAS) 대비 중등대수교육 기초 연구)

  • This study was designed to gain insight to adopt CAS into secondary level algebra education in Korea. Most inactive usage of calculators in math and most negative effects of calculators on their achievements of Korean students were shown in International studies such as TIMSS-R. A comparative study was carried out with consideration of mathematical backgrounds and technological environments. 8 Korean students and 26 US students in Grade 11 were participated in this study. Subjects' Problem solving process and their strategies of CAS usage in classical Box-problem with CAS were analyzed. CAS helped modeling by providing symbolic manipulation commands and graphs with students' mathematical knowledge. Results indicates that CAS requires shifts focus in algebraic contents: recognition of decimal & algebraic presentations of numbers; linking various presentations, etc. The extent of instrumentation effects on the selection of problem solving strategies among Korea and US students. Two-year Follow-Up Study on Effects of STEAM Education Program Based on Physical Computing (2년간의 추적 연구를 통한 Physical Computing 기반의 STEAM 프로그램의 효과)

  • By PISA 2007, TIMSS 2011, Korean high school students had high academic achievement to science and mathematics, while they had low attitude. Prospective college students are increasingly avoiding natural science and engineering. Moreover, the opportunities to learn to computer science in middle and high school are disappeared rapidly. The necessity of STEAM program based on Physical computing arise under these situation. Therefore, we developed STEAM program and studied the effects of the program in 2012. The result showed that students' scientific interests and attitude, scientific problem solving ability, scientific creative problem solving ability, personality test for children, and satisfaction of school life were enhanced. This study is follow-up study for the same students who improved every domain of the measurements. They were administerd pre-test at start of 2012, post-test at end of 2012, and delayed post-test at the end of 2013, on same test. The result of the study showed that only attitude to Scientific Inquiry was enhanced, but there was no significant result on the other domain of the test in comparison with start of 2012. But this result demonstrate the effect of STEAM education conversely.
