This paper provides the results of the investigation on the optimum thickness distribution of plate structures with different essential boundary conditions. In this study, the strain energy to be minimized is considered as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. The computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) such as Coon's patch representation is used to represent the thickness distribution of plates. A reliable degenerated shell finite element is adopted to calculate the accurate strain energy level of the plates. Robust optimization algorithms provided in the optimizer DOT are adopted to search the optimum thickness values during the optimization iteration. Finally, the square plate is used to find out the optimum thickness distribution of plates according to different essential boundary condition.
The multi-dielectric layer SiOz/Si3N4/SiO2(ONO) is used to scale down the memory device. In this paper, the change of composition in ONO layer due to the process condition and the conduction mechanism are observed. The composition of the oxide film grown through the oxidation of nitride film is analyzed using auger electron spectroscopy(AES). AES results show that oxygen concentration increases at the interface between oxide and nitride layers as the thickness -of the top oxide layer increases. Results of I-V measurement show that the insulating properties improve as the thickness of the top oxide layer increases. But when the thickness of the nitride layer decreases below 63.angs, insulating peoperties of film 28.angs. of top oxide and film 35.angs. turn over showing that insulating property of film 28.angs. of top oxide is better than that of film 35.angs. of top oxide. This phenomenon of turn over is thought as the result of generation of surface state due to oxygen flow into nitride during oxidation process. As the thickness of the top oxide and nitride increases, the electrical breakdown field increases, but when the thickness of top oxide reaches 35.angs, the same phenomenon of turn over occurs. Optimum film thickness for scaled multi-layer dielectric of memory device SONOS is estimated to be 63.angs. of nitride layer and 28.angs. of top oxide layer. In this case, maximum electrical breakdown field and leakage current are 18.5[MV/cm] and $8{\times}{10^-12}$[A], respectively.

Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. In FGM layer, material properties are assumed to be varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The 3-D finite element model is adopted by using an IS-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties in the thickness direction. Numerical results are compared with those of the previous works. In addition, the displacements, the tensile stresses and the compressive stresses are analyzed for the variation of FGM thickness ratio and volume fraction distribution.Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. The quality of bundles is closely related with the apparent thickness. Especially the variation of apparent thickness of bundle determines the qualify of the plane structure made or the bundle such as surface evenness, pore size, and the shape of air-gap, etc.,. This study is dealing with the development of a new measuring system of the thickness of bundle or cross-section by determining the size of the shadow of the object covered by a laser slit beam. Also the measured signal is characterized in terms of the correlogram, the irregularity in wavelength. The correlogram for the irregularity of several sample types could be represented by a sinusoidal function with exponentially decaying amplitude. Moreover, influence of the measuring speed on the signal and the characteristic differences according to the different types of bundle are investigated.

THRA(Total Hip Replacement Arthroplasty) has been widely used for several decades as a viable treatment of otherwise-unsolved hip problems. In THRA surgery, cement mantle thickness is critical to long-term implant survival of femoral stem fixed with cement. Numerous studies reported thin or incomplete cement mantle causes osteolysis, loosening, and the failure of implant. To analyze the effect of femoral stem rotation on cement thickness, in this study, we select two most popular stems used in THRA. Using CAD models obtained from a 3D scanner, we measure the cement mantle thickness developed by the rotation of a femoral stem in the virtual space created by broaching. The study shows that as the femoral stem deviates from the target coordinates, the minimum thickness of cement decreases. Therefore, we recommend development of a new methodology for accurate insertion of a femoral stem along the broached space. Also, modification of the stem design robust to the unintentional movement of a femoral stem in the broached space, can alleviate the problem.

The thickness dependent electrical, structural, and optical properties of ZnO films grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at various growth temperatures were investigated. In order to deposit ZnO films, diethylzinc and deionized water were used as metal precursor and reactant, respectively. ALD process window was found at the growth temperature range from $150^{\circ}C$ to $250^{\circ}C$ with a growth rate of about $1.7{\AA}/cycle$. The electrical properties were studied by using van der Pauw method with Hall effect measurement. The structural and optical properties of ZnO films were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and UV-visible spectrometry as a function of thickness values of ZnO films, which were selected by the lowest electrical resistivity. Finally, the figure of merit of ZnO films could be estimated as a function of the film thickness. As a result, this investigation of thickness dependent electrical, structural, and optical properties of ZnO films can provide proper information when applying to optoelectronic devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells.
Pipe wall thinning by flow-accelerated corrosion and various types of erosion is a significant and costly damage phenomenon in secondary piping systems of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Most NPPs have management programs to ensure pipe integrity due to wall thinning that includes periodic measurements for pipe wall thicknesses using nondestructive evaluation techniques. Numerous measurements using ultrasonic tests (UTs; one of the nondestructive evaluation technologies) have been performed during scheduled outages in NPPs. Using the thickness measurement data, wall thinning rates of each component are determined conservatively according to several evaluation methods developed by the United States Electric Power Research Institute. However, little is known about the conservativeness or reliability of the evaluation methods because of a lack of understanding of the measurement error. In this study, quantitative models for UT thickness measurement deviations of nuclear pipes and fittings were developed as the first step for establishing an optimized thinning evaluation procedure considering measurement error. In order to understand the characteristics of UT thickness measurement errors of nuclear pipes and fittings, round robin test results, which were obtained by previous researchers under laboratory conditions, were analyzed. Then, based on a large dataset of actual plant data from four NPPs, a quantitative model for UT thickness measurement deviation is proposed for plant conditions.
The effect of geometry factors on the combined mode stress intensity factor behaviors of a slant crack in a non-uniform thickness material was analysed by 2-dimensional theoretical analysis. The analysis is based on the Laurent's series expansions of complex potentials where the complex coefficients of the series are determined from the compatibility and the equilibrium conditions of the thickness interface and the stress free conditions of the crack surface. In numerical calculations the perturbation technique is employed. The expressions for the crack tip stress intensity factor are given in the form of power series of dimensionless crack length $\lamda$, and the function of crack slant angle $\alpha$ and thickness ratio $\beta$. The results of numerical calculations for each problems are represented as the correction factors F($\lamda$, $\alpha$, $\beta$). The results clearly show the following characteristics : The correction factors of the combined mode stress intensity factors for a non-uniform thickness material can be defined in the form of F($\lamda$, $\alpha$, $\beta$). The stress intensity factor values for a given crack length are decreased with increase of thickness ratio $\beta$.

This paper describes a analysis on the chip thickness model required for cutting force simulation in ball-end milling. In milling, cutting forces are obtained by multiplying chip area to specific cutting forces in each cutting instance. Specific cutting forces are one of the important factors for cutting force predication and have unique value according to workpiece materials. Chip area in two dimensional cutting is simply calculated using depth of cut and feed, but not simply obtained in three dimensional cutting such as milling due to complex cutting mechanics. In ball-end milling, machining is almost performed in the ball part of the cutter and tool radius is varied along contact point of the cutter and workpiece. In result, the cutting speed and the effective helix angle are changed according to length from the tool tip. In this study, for chip thickness model analysis, tool and chip geometry are analyzed and then the definition of chip thickness and estimation method are described. The resulted of analysis are verified by compared with geometrical simulation and other research. The proposed chip thickness model is more precise.

In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of fatigue fracture on TB(Tailored Blank) weldment by comparing the fatigue crack propagation characteristics of base metal with those of TB welded sheet used for vehicle body panels. We also investigated the influence of center crack on the fatigue characteristic of laser weld sheet of same thickness. We conducted an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on the base metal specimen of 1.2mm thickness of cold-rolled metal sheet(SPCSD) and 2.0mm thickness of hot-rolled metal sheet(SAPH440) and 1.2+2.0mm TB specimen. We also made an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on 2.0+2.0mm and 1.2+1.2mm thickness TB specimen which had center crack. The characteristics of fatigue crack growth on the base metal were different from those on 1.2+2.0mm thickness TB specimen. The fatigue crack growth rate of the TB welded specimens is slower in low stress intensity factor range$({\Delta}K)$ region and faster in high ${\Delta}K$ region than that of the base metal specimens.
