  • This paper proposes a novel low-cost and high-speed Reed-Solomon (RS) decoder based on a new degree computationless modified Euclid´s (DCME) algorithm. This architecture has quite low hardware complexity compared with conventional modified Euclid´s (ME) architectures, since it can remove completely the degree computation and comparison circuits. The architecture employing a systolic away requires only the latency of 2t clock cycles to solve the key equation without initial latency. In addition, the DCME architecture using 3t+2 basic cells has regularity and scalability since it uses only one processing element. The RS decoder has been synthesized using the 0.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Faraday CMOS standard cell library and operates at 200MHz and its data rate suppots up to 1.6Gbps. For tile (255, 239, 8) RS code, the gate counts of the DCME architecture and the whole RS decoder excluding FIFO memory are only 21,760 and 42,213, respectively. The proposed RS decoder can reduce the total fate count at least 23% and the total latency at least 10% compared with conventional ME architectures.

  • This paper proposes an enhanced degree computationless modified Euclid's(E-DCME) algorithm and its architecture for Reed-Solomon decoders. The proposed E-DCME algorithm has shorter critical path delay that is $T_{mult}+T_{add}+T_{mux}$ compared with the existing modified Euclid's algorithm and the degree computationless modified Euclid's(DCME) algorithm since it uses new initial conditions. The proposed E-DCME architecture employing a systolic array requires only 2t-1 clock cycles to solve the key equation without initial latency. In addition, the E-DCME architecture consisting of 3t basic cells has regularity and scalability since it uses only one processing element. The E-DCME architecture using the $0.18{\mu}m$ Samsung standard cell library consists of 18,000 gates.

  • In this paper, an FPGA-based acceleration scheme of range Doppler algorithm (RDA) is proposed for the real time synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. Hardware architectures of matched filter based on systolic array architecture and a high speed sinc interpolator to compensate range cell migration (RCM) are presented. In addition, the proposed hardware was implemented and accelerated on Xilinx Alveo FPGA. Experimental results for 4096×4096-size SAR imaging showed that FPGA-based implementation achieves 2 times acceleration compared to GPU-based design. It was also confirmed the proposed design can be implemented with 60,247 CLB LUTs, 103,728 CLB registers, 20 block RAM tiles and 592 DPSs at the operating frequency of 312 MHz.

  • Among finite filed arithmetic operations, division/inverse is known as a basic operation for public-key cryptosystems over $GF(2^{m})$ and it is computed by performing the repetitive $AB^{2}$ multiplication. This paper presents a digit-serial-in-serial-out systolic architecture for performing the $AB^2$ operation in GF$(2^{m})$. To obtain L×L digit-serial-in-serial-out architecture, new $AB^{2}$ algorithm is proposed and partitioning, index transformation and merging the cell of the architecture, which is derived from the algorithm, are proposed. Based on the area-time product, when the digit-size of digit-serial architecture, L, is selected to be less than about m, the proposed digit-serial architecture is efficient than bit-parallel architecture, and L is selected to be less than about $(1/5)log_{2}(m+1)$, the proposed is efficient than bit-serial. In addition, the area-time product complexity of pipelined digit-serial $AB^{2}$ systolic architecture is approximately $10.9\%$ lower than that of nonpipelined one, when it is assumed that m=160 and L=8. Additionally, since the proposed architecture can be utilized for the basic architecture of crypto-processor and it is well suited to VLSI implementation because of its simplicity, regularity and pipelinability.

  • Background: Recently, cell transplantation has been extensively investigated to improve heart function in dysfunctional heart. This study was designed to compare the effects of smooth muscle cells (SMC) and heart cells (HC) transplantation in dilated cardiomyopathic hamsters. Material and Method: HC and SMC were isolated from heart and ductus deferens of BIO 53.58 hamsters, and cultured for transplantation. HC and SMC or culture medium were transplanted into the left ventricle of 17 weeks old adult hamsters in HC transplanted (HCTx), SMC transplantation (SMCTX), and control groups (Con) (N = 10 each). Cyclosporine (5 mg/Kg) was administered subcutaneously for HCTx. Sham operated hamsters (N=10) underwent the surgery but did not receive an injection. At 4 weeks after transplantation, heart function was evaluated in all groups using a Langendorff perfusion apparatus. Result: Histology showed severe focal myocardial necrosis in all groups. HCTx and SMCTx formed huge muscle tissue in dilated myocardium. SMCTx and HCTx had better heart function than Con and sham (p<0.01). And SMCTx had better peak systolic pressure (p<0.05) antral developed pressure (p<0.05) than HCTx. But sham and Con did not any statistical make difference. Conclusion: SMCTx and HCTx formed muscle tissue and improved ventricular function in hamsters with dilated cardiomyopathy And SMCTx showed better heart function in peak systolic pressure and developed pressure than HCTx.

  • Purpose: Severe aplastic anemia (SAA), a fatal disease, requires multiple transfusion, immunosuppressive therapy, and finally, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) as the definitive treatment. We hypothesized that iron overloading associated with multiple transfusions and HSCT-related complications may adversely affect cardiac function. Left ventricular (LV) function was assessed in children after HSCT for SAA. Methods: Forty-six consecutive patients with a median age of 9.8 years (range, 1.5-18 years), who received HSCT for SAA and who underwent comprehensive echocardiography before and after HSCT, were included in this study. The data of LV functional parameters obtained using conventional echocardiography, tissue Doppler imaging (TDI), and speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) were collected from pre- and post-HSCT echocardiography. These data were compared to those of 40 age-matched normal controls. Results: In patients, the LV ejection fraction, shortening fraction, end-diastolic dimension, mitral early diastolic E velocity, TDI mitral septal E' velocity, and STE LV longitudinal systolic strain rate (SSR) decreased significantly after HSCT. Compared to normal controls, patients had significantly lower post-HSCT early diastolic E velocity and E/A ratio. On STE, patients had significantly decreased LV deformational parameters including LV longitudinal systolic strain (SS), SSR, and diastolic SR (DSR), and circumferential SS and DSR. Serum ferritin levels showed weak but significant correlations (P<0.05) with LV longitudinal SS and SSR and circumferential SS and DSR. Conclusion: Subclinical LV dysfunction is evident in patients after HSCT for SAA, and was associated with increased iron load. Serial monitoring of cardiac function is mandatory in this population.

  • Lead (Pb) is a metal that is generally considered to be toxic to the cardiovascular system. Pb-exposed animals display the evidence of increased oxidative stress and hypertension. The current study was designed to examine whether Korean red ginseng (KRG) has protective effects against Pb-induced hypertension and oxidative stress in Pb-exposed rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to Pb exposure or control groups. KRG was administered in drinking water at a concentration of 100 mg/kg/day; the control group received plain drinking water. Animals in the Pb-exposed groups were provided with drinking water containing 100 ppm Pb acetate for 12 weeks. Blood pressure, plasma glutathione, blood Pb concentration, and hematologic data, such as red blood cell quantity, were determined. Pb poisoning was assessed by measuring the blood Pb concentration. Pb exposure (100 ppm) for 12 weeks resulted in a marked rise in systolic blood pressure and blood Pb concentration, as well as a significant reduction in plasma glutathione levels and red blood cell quantity. Other measurements, such as heart rate, body weight, and white blood cell quantity, were unchanged. Treatment with KRG significantly lowered blood pressure, raised plasma glutathione and increased red blood cell numbers in Pb-exposed animals; it also had no effect on heart rate, body weight, or white blood cell quantity. However, the elevated blood Pb concentration was not reduced by treatment with KRG (100 mg/kg). Taken together, these data indicate that treatment with KRG in Pb-exposed animals can reduce oxidative stress and lower blood pressure, suggesting that KRG might be protective against Pb-exposed hypertension and oxidative stress.

  • This paper proposes a full-search block-matching motion estimation circuit with hybrid architecture combining systolic arrays and adder trees for an MPEG-4 encoder. The proposed circuit uses systolic arrays for motion estimation with a small number of clock cycles and adder trees to reduce required circuit resources. The interpolation circuit for 1/2 pixel motion estimation consists of six adders, four subtracters and ten registers. We improved the circuit performance by resource sharing and efficient scheduling techniques. We described the motion estimation circuit for integer and 1/2 pixels at RTL in Verilog HDL. The logic-level circuit synthesized by using 130nm standard cell library contains 218,257 gates and can process 94 D1($720{\times}480$) image frames per second.
