  • This study showed the reduced greenhouse gas(GHG) emission through GHG inventory establishment and process diagnosis for a response to climatic change. Also, it presented a direction for company's response to climatic change. Ulsan from its industrial complex has many energy-intensive companies such as petrochemistry, automobile and shipbuilding, and as we judged that the systematic reduction of GHG emission would make a considerable reduction of GHG emission in national dimension we executed this study from 10 companies. It showed the high rate of direction GHG emissions by its process that 5 of 10 companies calculated GHG emission and built its inventory. Also, in order to reduce energy and GHG, it produced about 227,554 million won of its economic effect and 50,740 ton/yr of its sparing effect.

  • The study, considering the fact that most of the recently built atrium buildings do not fulfill their capacity of energy conservation and environmental control, aims to develop design strategies for architects in designing atrium buildings in terms of energy/environment standpoint. The research includes case studies of existing atrium buildings, quantatative analysis of energy performance for atrium buildings and systematic investigation of various aspects of atrium regarding its function of thermal, luminous and acoustical control of a building. The result of the study may contribute to the considerable reduction of energy consumption as well as to improvement of overall building environment.

  • A method is presented to detect and assess the structural damage from changes in natural frequencies using Genetic Algorithm (GA). Using the natural frequencies of the structure, it is possible to formulate the inverse problem in optimization terms and then to utilize a solution procedure employing GA to assess the damages. The technique has been applied to a cantilever beam and a plane frame, each one with different damage scenario to study the efficiency of the developed algorithm. A laboratory tested data has been used to verify the proposed algorithm. The study indicates the potentiality of the developed code to solve a wide range of inverse identification problems in a systematic way. The outcomes show that this method can detect and estimate the amount of damages with satisfactory precision.

  • In this paper, various hazard factors are reviewed on the train fire accident in railway tunnel and subway. In case studies of systematic risk evaluation on the tunnel fire accident, we have learned the critical fire safety points for accident prevention and damage reduction such as fire-endurance of infrastructure, mortality of heat & toxic smoke, emergency situation control and management of escape requirements etc.. These hazard analysis study will contribute for improving the railway fire-safety and establishing the long-tenn safety management plan.

  • The ground-borne vibration from pile driving is causing many public discontents. However, because of the fact that the characteristics of wave propagation and attenuation are not well understood, systematic and effective vibration reduction measures can not be taken. This paper attempts to study the propagation of stress waves induced by the pile driving. To simulate the wave propagation in a semi-infinite domain, the so-called absorbing boundaries are incorporated in the finite element method and a series of numerical simulations is performed. Numerical results show that the surface displacement and velocity increase first and then decrease as the pile penetration depth becomes larges.

  • Most studies of rotary machinery design have been performed to establsih a new mechanism or a dramatic combination of machine elements for the power transmission. Although the rotary machine is worked very efficiently, that still has a major work to better performance which is the optimization of the selected mechanism for the mechanical efficiency, low vibration and noise, or customer interest. This work presents a practical approach used for washer's efficiency and machinery vibration and noise reduction along with a systematic procedure. Also for the confirming the study, a computer simulation program and a real working mock-up are developed and used to show very good agreement with the analytical result.

  • Waste policy instruments such as garbage bag-fee system and recycling policy initiated in 1995 have contributed to the reduction of solid waste generation. Rural areas now produce less amount of solid wastes in terms of per capital than urban areas and as compare to a decade ago. However, most policy efforts since the early 1990s related to waste issue have been concentrated in urban areas. Waste problems in rural areas are not the amount itself, but the specific characteristics which are unique in rural regions. Large portion of solid wastes and farming wastes are being illegally treated and/or burned out. Surveys show that the main reasons for the illegal treatment of rural wastes are th lack of systematic policy tools targeting on them, insufficient financial capacity and man power of local governments, rural people's cognition problem about wastes, among others. This study reviews current features of the treatment of rural solid wastes and provides policy suggestions for the resolution of the problem.

  • In this study, we propose a more systematic design process for the structure-borne noise. The proposed way consists of 4 steps: Problem definition, Cause analysis, Development of counter-measure and Validation. Especially, we improved the second step: Cause analysis. According to the PCA(Panel Contribution Analysis), a reduction in vibration of the panels of which panel contribution is positive and larger, results in a reduction in structure-borne noise. We have, however, met the case in which the concept of PCA is no valid in a few vehicle tests. In order to understand this phenomenon, we compared the major panels selected by PCA with the one chosen by DSA(Design Sensitivity Analysis). After investigating the difference between the two results, a more improved process is suggested. The proposed one for the second step in the design process consists of not only the previous way: PCA with deformation analysis results but also DSA. It is finally validated that the proposed design process decreases the sound pressure of the concerned noise transfer function more than 3.5 dB.

  • When bridges are constructed with lower heights from the ground, the formed channel between the deck and the ground will inevitably hinder or accelerate the air flow. This in turn will have an impact on the aerodynamic forces on the deck, which may result in unexpected wind-induced responses of bridges. This phenomenon can be referred to "ground effects." So far, no systematic studies into ground effects on the wind-induced responses of closed box girders have been performed. In this paper, wind tunnel tests have been adopted to study the ground effects on the aerodynamic force coefficients and the wind-induced responses of a closed box girder. In correlation with the heights from the ground in two ground roughness, the aerodynamic force coefficients, the Strouhal number ($S_t$), the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) lock-in phenomena over a range of wind velocities, the VIV maximum amplitudes, the system torsional damping ratio, the flutter derivatives, the critical flutter wind speeds and their variation laws correlated with the heights from the ground of a closed box girder have been presented through wind tunnel tests. The outcomes show that the ground effects make the vortex-induced phenomena occur in advance and adversely affect the flutter stability.
