  • This paper describes the synthesis of robust decentralized controllers for uncertain large-scale discrete-time systems with time-delays in subsystem interconnections. Based on the Lyapunov method, a sufficient condition for robust stability, is derived in terms of a linear matrix inequality (LMI). The solutions of the LMI can be easily obtained using various efficient convex optimization techniques. A numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed method.

  • Recently many adaptive control schemes for the industrial robot manipulator have been developed. Especially, learning control utilizing the repetitive motion of robot and based on iterative signal synthesis attracts much interests. However, since most of these approaches excludes the boundness of the input torque supplied to the manipulator, its effectiveness may be limited and also the full dynamic capacity of the robot manipulator can not be utilized. To overcome the above-mentioned difficulties and meet the desired performance, we propose an approach which yields the effective learning control schemes in this paper. In this study, some stability conditions derived from applying the Lyapunov theory to the discrete linear time-varying dynamic system are established and also an optimization scheme considering the bounded input torque is introduced. These results are simulated on a digital computer using a three-joint revolute manipulator to show their effectiveness.

  • We have developed an optimization algorithm based formulation for performing efficient time driven simultaneous place and route for FPGAs. Field programmable gate array(FPGAs) provide of drastically reducing the turn-around time for digital ICs, with a relatively small degradation in performance. For a variety of application specific integrated circuit application, where time-to-market is most critical and the performance requirement do not mandate a custom or semicustom approach, FPGAs are an increasingly popular alternative. This has prompted a substantial amount of specialized synthesis and layout research focused on maximizing density, minimizing delay, and minimizing design time.

  • This paper presents a combinatorial method to compute the solutions of optimization problem. The present hybrid algorithm is the synthesis of an artificial life algorithm and the random tabu search method. The hybrid algorithm is not only faster than the conventional artificial life algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find all global optimum solutions. And the enhanced artificial life algorithm is applied to optimum design of high-speed, short journal bearings and the usefuless is verified through this example.

  • In this paper laser micromachining system design process for commercialization is suggested. The constructed system design process is properly adjusted for laser micromachining area after tailoring engine process of system engineering process such as requirement analysis, functional analysis and allocation, system synthesis and system optimization process. In the current laser machining system design, system components and specifications are determined on the basis of experimental experience which a laser is being used in machining some materials as well as the current machining and research trend. In this paper, however, systematic process is suggested in addition to experimental experience, which the laser and system components and their specifications are decided in the process of definition of functional requirements and engine design variables of system to satisfy the customer's requirements.

  • In this paper, planar waypoint guidance synthesis for UAVs using the LQ optimal impact-angle-control guidance law is proposed. We prove that the energy-optimal control problem with the constraint of passing through the waypoints is equivalent to the problem of finding the optimal pass angles on each waypoint of the optimal impact-angle-control law. The optimal pass angles can be obtained as a numerical solution of the simple pass angle optimization problem that requires neither input parameterization nor constraints. The trajectory obtained by applying the optimal impact-angle-control law with these optimal pass angles becomes energy optimal.

  • Bacterial cellulose (BC), which is produced by some bacteria, has unique structural, functional, physical and chemical properties. Thus, the mass production of BC for industrial application has recently attracted considerable attention. To enhance BC production, two aspects have been considered, namely, the engineering and genetic viewpoints. The former includes the reactor design, nutrient selection, process control and optimization; and the latter the cloning of the BC synthesis gene, and the genetic modification of the speculated genes for higher BC production. In this review, recent advances in BC production from the two viewpoints mentioned above are described, mainly using the bacterium Gluconacetobacter xylinus.

  • Simple spring-damper-mass models have been widely used to understand whole-body vertical biodynamic response characteristics of the seated vehicle driver. However, most previous models have not considered about the non-rigid masses(wobbling masses). A simple mechanical model of seated human body developed in this study included the torso represented by a rigid and a wobbling mass. Within the 0.5-20Hz frequency range and for excitation amplitudes maintained below $5ms^{-2}$, this 4-degree-of-freedom driver model is proposed to satisfy the measured vertical vibration response characteristics defined from a synthesis of published data for subjects seated erect without backrest support. The parameters are identified by using the combinatorial optimization technique, simulated annealing method. The model response was found to be provided a closer agreement with the response characteristics than previously published models.

  • The objectiv of this paper is to offer the method of the optimum structural modification by fixing the stiffener on the structure. The vibrational characteristics of a open box type structure are analyzed by the sub-structure synthesis method and sensitivies of each sub-structure are calculated by sensitivity analysis method. The positions to modify are found and the quantities to change are obtained by optimization techniques. As the result, it was found that; (1) The sensitivites of the natural frequency could easily be calculated by the sensitivity analysis method and the optimum position to fix stiffeners could be found. (2) The exact size of stiffeners could be calculated by the optimum structural modification method and the natural frequency could be easily shifted to the objective value. (3) It could be confirmed that the stiffener is a effective tool for accomplishing structural modification.

  • Active and shape morphing aerospace structures are discussed with a focus on activities aimed at practical implementation. In active structures applications range from dynamic load alleviation in aircraft and spacecraft up to static and dynamic shape control. In contrast, shape morphing means strong shape variation according to different mission status and needs, aiming to enhance functionality and performance over wide flight and mission regimes. The interaction of required flexible materials with the morphing structure and the actuating mechanisms is specifically addressed together with approaches in design and simulation.
