  • The compacting and sintering behavior of titanium powders containing oxygen in the range of 1980~8450 ppm was examined. The powders were prepared by the hydride-dehydride (HDH) and by the deoxidation by solid state(DOSS) methods. Their compaction density ranged from 69.0% to 62.3% and decreased with the increase in the oxygen content. It was explained by the effect of oxygen on the hardness of powders. Unlike the compaction density, the oxygen content did not affect the apparent density greatly being 90.5$\pm$0.5% after sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Their average grain size was $60\mu\textrm{m}$ and the size and distribution of pores were about the same for all cases. The hardness of sintered samples showed a linear increase with oxygen and could be expressed as VHN(sintered)= 135.5+64.3$\times$$(wt{\%}O_2)$ The exami-nation of fracture surface revealed that the ductile-brittle transition occurs at oxygen contents of 2987~5582 ppm.

  • Thermal conditions in practice at the traditional bronze workshop of the Korean Folk Village in Yongin were examined along with the microstructures of some high tin bronze objects made there. Laboratory experiments approximating the conditions of the workshop were also carried out and the results were compared. The operating temperature of the workshop furnace was measured to range from $750^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$ while the surface temperature of an object, upon its removal from the furnace for additional thermo-mechanical treatments, was generally in the range of $600^{\circ}C$ to $685^{\circ}C$. This variation in working temperatures was reflected in varying microstructures developed upon quenching. The products of the Folk Village were found to consist of microstructures where the ${\alpha}$ grains of the Cu-Sn system were distributed in the background of different phases including the ${\beta}$-martensite phase, retained ${\gamma}$ phase, ${\alpha}+{\delta}$ eutectoid or their mixtures. This variability, which is also identified in objects made in ancient times as well as in our laboratory experiments, suggests that the actual thermal conditions given during the quenching treatments are much more complicated than is inferred from the temperature measurements. This paper will present detailed accounts of the thermo-mechanical treatments as observed in the high tin bronze workshop of the Korean Folk Village and discuss the evolution of varying microstructures in terms of the substantial variability involved in the implementation of the traditional forged high tin bronze technology of Korea.

  • Some silicon micromechanical structures useful in sensors and actuators have been fabricated by electropolishing or porous silicon formation technique by anodic reaction in HF solution. The microstructures were lightly doped single crystal silicon and the formation was isotropic independent of crystal directions. Porous silicon layer(PSL) was formed selectively in $n^{+}$ region of $n^{+}/n$ silicon structure by anodic reaction in concentrated HF(20-48%) solution. Characteristics of the formed PSL were investigated along with change of the reaction voltage, HF concentration and the reaction time. PSL was formed only in $n^{+}$ region. The porosity of the PSL was decreased with the increase of HF concentration and independent of reaction voltage. For the case of $n/n^{+}/n$ structures, the etched surface of silicon was fairly smooth and a cusp was not found. The thickness of the microstructures was the same as that of the epitaxial n-Si layer and good uniformity. We have fabricated acceleration sensors by anodic reaction in HF solution(5 wt%) and planar technology. The process was compatible with conventional It fabrication technique. Various micromechanical structures, such as rotors of motor, gears and linear actuator, were also fabricated by the technique and examined by SEM photographs.

  • Amorphous $TiO_2$ thin films were deposited on glass substrates by ion beam sputtering in which the ratio of $O_2$/Ar gas used as discharged gas was varied from 0 to 2. After optical and microstructure properties and chemical composition of thin films was analyzed, antireflection coating layers were fabricated with $SiO_2$/$TiO_2$ multi-layers. Thin films deposition was performed at room temperature and ion beam voltage and ion current density for sputtering of target were fixed at 1.2 kV and 200 $\mu\textrm{A}/\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. Refractive indexs of the deposited $TiO_2$films were 2.40-2.45 at a wavelength of 633 nm. $TiO_2$films had high transmission and stoichiometry when ratio of $O_2$/Ar was 1. Rms roughness of deposited $TiO_2$ film was below 7 $\AA$. In excessive $O_2$ environments, however Rms roughness increased over 50 $\AA$. Transmittance decreased by scattering of rough surface. Reflectance of $SiO_2$/$TiO_2$multi-layers was below 1% in visible light.

  • This study investigates the oxidation properties of Fe-14Cr ferritic oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) steel at various high temperatures (900, 1000, and $1100^{\circ}C$ for 24 h). The initial microstructure shows that no clear structural change occurs even under high-temperature heat treatment, and the average measured grain size is 0.4 and $1.1{\mu}m$ for the as-fabricated and heat-treated specimens, respectively. Y-Ti-O nanoclusters 10-50 nm in size are observed. High-temperature oxidation results show that the weight increases by 0.27 and $0.29mg/cm^2$ for the as-fabricated and heat-treated ($900^{\circ}C$) specimens, and by 0.47 and $0.50mg/cm^2$ for the as-fabricated and heat-treated ($1000^{\circ}C$) specimens, respectively. Further, after 24 h oxidation tests, the weight increases by 56.50 and $100.60mg/cm^2$ for the as-fabricated and heat-treated ($1100^{\circ}C$) specimens, respectively; the latter increase is approximately 100 times higher than that at $1000^{\circ}C$. Observation of the surface after the oxidation test shows that $Cr_2O_3$ is the main oxide on a specimen tested at $1000^{\circ}C$, whereas $Fe_2O_3$ and $Fe_3O_4$ phases also form on a specimen tested at $1100^{\circ}C$, where the weight increases rapidly. The high-temperature oxidation behavior of Fe-14Cr ODS steel is confirmed to be dominated by changes in the $Cr_2O_3$ layer and generation of Fe-based oxides through evaporation.

  • In this work, we developed a synthetic method for preparing one-dimensional $MnO_2$ nanowires through a hydrothermal method using a mixture of $KMnO_4$ and $MnSO_4$ precursors. As-prepared $MnO_2$ nanowires had a high surface area and porous structure, which are beneficial to the fast electron and ion transfer during electrochemical reaction. The microstructure and chemical structure of $MnO_2$ nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements. The electrochemical properties of $MnO_2$ nanowire electrodes were also investigated using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge with a three-electrode system. $MnO_2$ nanowire electrodes showed a high specific capacitance of 129 F/g, a high rate capability of 61% retention, and an excellent cycle life of 100% during 1000 cycles.

  • The biomimetic approach on the cuticular spinning nozzles of the major ampullate silk glands in the golden-web spider Nephila calvata has been attempted using various visualizing techniques of light and electron microscopes to improve the design of spinning nozzle for producing synthetic nanofibers spun from electrospinning apparatus. The major ampullate spigot which has the most effective nozzle system to produce nanofibers for dragline silk with high strength and elasticity is connected via the bullet type spigot on anterior spinneret with flexible terminal segment. The excretory duct which transports the liquid silk feedstock from ampulla to spigot is divided into 3 limbs by loops back on itself to form an S-shape morphology that is bundled in connective tissue. Final diameter of the nanofibers at nozzle was dramatically reduced by gradual narrowing of duct cuticle less than 10 times comparing to its original size of funnel region. Moreover, the funnel has a characteristic cuticular organization with porous microstructure which seems to be related to water removal from feedstock of silk precursors. High magnification electron micrographs also reveal the presence of the spiral grooves on the surface of the cuticular intima near the valve which presumed to reduce friction during rapid flow of liquid silk.

  • The optimal condition for preparation of powdered calcium acetate (LCCA) which has high solubility, from calcined powder (LCCP) of the littleneck clam shell by response surface methodology (RSM) was examined. Increased molar ratio of LCCP led to reduced solubility, yield, color values, and overall quality. The critical values of multiple response optimization of independent variables were 2.57 M of acetic acid and 1.57 M of LCCP. The actual values (pH 7.0, 96.1% for solubility, and 220.9% for yield) under the optimized condition were similar to the predicted values. LCCA showed strong buffering capacity between pH 4.89 and 4.92 on addition of ~2 mL of 1 N HCl. The calcium content and solubility of LCCA were 21.9-23.0 g/100 g and 96.1-100.1%, respectively. The FT-IR and XRD patterns of LCCA were identified as calcium acetate monohydrate, and FESEM images revealed an irregular and rod-like microstructure.

  • $BiFeO_3$ (BFO) thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si(100) substrates by RF magnetron sputtering method at room temperature. The influence of the flow rate of $O_2$ gas on the preparation of $BiFeO_3$ thin films was studied. XRD results indicate that the $BiFeO_3$ thin films were crystallized to the perovskite structure with the presence of small amount of impurity phases. The flow rate of $O_2$ gas has great affect on the microstructures and magnetic properties of $BiFeO_3$ thin films. As flow rate of $O_2$ gas increased, roughness and grain size of the thin films increased. $BiFeO_3$ thin films exhibited weak ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. The PFM images revealed correlation between the surface morphology and the piezoresponse, indicating that the piezoelectric coefficient is related to microstructure.
